ٱلْبَقَرَة : ١٨٩

يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you
عَنِ about
ٱلۡأَهِلَّةِۖ the new moons
قُلۡ Say
هِيَ They

لِلنَّاسِ for the people
وَٱلۡحَجِّۗ and (for) the Hajj
وَلَيۡسَ And it is not
ٱلۡبِرُّ [the] righteousness

مِن from
ظُهُورِهَا their backs
وَلَٰكِنَّ [and] but
ٱلۡبِرَّ [the] righteous
مَنِ (is one) who
ٱتَّقَىٰۗ fears (Allah)
وَأۡتُواْ And come
ٱلۡبُيُوتَ (to) the houses
مِنۡ from
أَبۡوَٰبِهَاۚ their doors
وَٱتَّقُواْ And fear
ٱللَّهَ Allah
لَعَلَّكُمۡ so that you may
تُفۡلِحُونَ (be) successful

They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the crescent moons. Say, "They are measurements of time for the people and for ḥajj [pilgrimage]." And it is not righteousness to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is [in] one who fears Allāh. And enter houses from their doors. And fear Allāh that you may succeed.

They will ask you, O Muhammad may peace and salutation be upon him, about the new moons (ahilla, plural of hilaal): 'Why do they seem very thin, and then wax until they are full of light, and then wane again as at the first, and are not always the same, in the way that the sun is?' Say, to them: 'They are appointed times (mawaaqeet is the plural of meeqaat) for the people, for them to know the times for sowing the land, for business, for their women's waiting periods, their fast and their breaking it, and the Pilgrimage' (wa'l-hajji and the Pilgrimage', is a supplement to li'l-naasi, 'for the people'), that is to say, [appointed times] by which its season is known, for if they [the new moons] always looked the same, none of these things could be known. It is not piety to come to the houses from their backs, in [your] state of pilgrimage inviolability (ihraam), when you would bore holes in them to enter them and then exit, disregarding their doors; they used to do this and claim that it was out of piety; but piety is to fear, God by not contravening His commands; so come to the houses by their doors, when in a state of pilgrimage inviolability, and fear God, that you may prosper, [that you may] triumph.

"The Crescent Moons Allah says; يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الاهِلَّةِ قُلْ هِيَ مَوَاقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَالْحَجِّ They ask you (O Muhammad) about the crescents. Say:""These are signs to mark fixed periods of time for mankind and for the pilgrimage."" Al-Awfi related that Ibn Abbas said, ""The people asked Allah's Messenger about the crescent moons. Thereafter, this Ayah was revealed, so that they mark their acts of worship, the Iddah (the period of time a divorced woman or a widow is required to wait before remarrying) of their women and the time of their Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah)."" Abdur-Razzaq reported that Ibn Umar narrated that Allah's Messenger said: جَعَلَ اللهُ الاَْهِلَّةَ مَوَاقِيتَ لِلنَّاسِ فَصُومُوا لِرُوْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُوْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَعُدُّوا ثَلَثِينَ يَوْمًا Allah has made the crescents signs to mark fixed periods of time for mankind. Hence, fast on seeing it (the crescent for Ramadan) and break the fast on seeing it (the crescent for Shawwal). If it (the crescent) was obscure to you then count thirty days (mark that month as thirty days). This Hadith was also collected by Al-Hakim in his Mustadrak, and he said, ""The chain is Sahih, and they (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not recorded it."" Righteousness comes from Taqwa Allah said: وَلَيْسَ الْبِرُّ بِأَنْ تَأْتُوْاْ الْبُيُوتَ مِن ظُهُورِهَا وَلَـكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنِ اتَّقَى وَأْتُواْ الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ أَبْوَابِهَا It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, etc.) that you enter the houses from the back, but Al-Birr is from Taqwa. So enter houses through their proper doors. Al-Bukhari recorded that Al-Bara said, ""During the time of Jahiliyyah, they used to enter the house from the back upon assuming the Ihram. Thereafter, Allah revealed (the following Ayah: وَلَيْسَ الْبِرُّ بِأَنْ تَأْتُوْاْ الْبُيُوتَ مِن ظُهُورِهَا وَلَـكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنِ اتَّقَى وَأْتُواْ الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ أَبْوَابِهَا (It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, etc.) that you enter the houses from the back but Al-Birr is from Taqwa. So enter houses through their proper doors)."" Abu Dawud At-Tayalisi recorded the same Hadith from Al-Bara but with the wording; ""The Ansar used to enter their houses from the back when returning from a journey. Thereafter, this Ayah (2:189 above) was revealed..."" Al-Hasan said, ""When some people during the time of Jahiliyyah would leave home to travel, and then decide not to travel, they would not enter the house from its door. Rather, they would climb over the back wall. Allah the Exalted said: وَلَيْسَ الْبِرُّ بِأَنْ تَأْتُوْاْ الْبُيُوتَ مِن ظُهُورِهَا (It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness) that you enter the houses from the back)."" Allah's statement: وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ and have Taqwa of Allah that you may be successful. Have Taqwa of Allah, means to do what He has commanded you and refrain from what He has forbidden for you, لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ (that you may be successful), tomorrow when you stand before Him and He thus rewards you perfectly."

The theme of righteousness which started from Verse 177 still continues. The six injunctions that have appeared so far relate to even retaliation, bequest, fasting, I` tikaf اعتکاف and abstention from the unlawful. Now come those of Hajj حج and Jihad جہاد prior to which it was clarified that lunar months and days will be followed in Hajj and in other religious obligations. Also erased here is a custom of jahiliyyah جاھلیہ (days of ignorance) which required people in Ihram احرام to go into their houses, if needed, from the back even if it had to be through a hole in the wall bored (made a hole) punctured for this purpose, as they thought it was prohibited to enter houses from the front door when in Ihram احرام . They even rated it as 'righteousness'. So, it is immediately after the mention of Hajj that Allah Almighty tells them that entering the houses from the backs is no righteousness. Real righteousness lies in abstaining from what has been made unlawful by Allah. Since coming into houses through their doors is not forbidden, the question of abstaining from it does not arise. So, those who wish to go into their houses should enter through their doors, but the center-piece of all principles is that people must keep fearing Allah so that they can hope to have the best of both the worlds. Verse 190-191 carry the injunction relating to fighting with disbelievers. It was the month of Dhul-Qa'dah ذوالقعدہ in the year 6 A.H. that the Holy Prophet ﷺ began his journey to the sacred city of Makkah in order to perform ` Umrah عمرہ . Makkah was still controlled by the mushrikin مشرکین (the infidels). They did not allow him and his Companions to go into the city and ` Umrah عمرہ could not be performed as intended. It took a great deal of negotiating to arrive at the agreement that the Muslims would perform ` Umrah عمرہ next year. This pact is known as the 'Peace of Hudaybiyyah'; a detailed explanation of the verse in this context will appear later. Commentary Reported in the first Verse (189) there is a question asked by the noble Companions and its answer given by Allah Almighty. Sayyidna ` Abdullah ibn ` Abbas ؓ says that the Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ had a distinct mannerliness of their own. On account of the great respect they had for him, they asked very few questions from their Prophet ﷺ . This is contrary to the practice of the communities of the past prophets who asked many questions and thus failed to observe the etiquette due before a prophet. Sayyidna ` Abdullah ibn ` Abbas ؓ adds that the total number of questions asked by the noble Companions as mentioned in the Holy Qur'an is fourteen, one of which has just appeared above: إِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي ' And when My servants ask you...' (186). The other question is right here. Other than these, there are six more questions appearing in Surah al-Baqarah itself. The rest of the six questions come up in various other Surahs. It is mentioned in the present verse that the noble Companions asked the Messenger of Allah about the new moon as it appears in the early part of the month, having a shape different from the sun. The new moon begins as a thin crescent slowly growing into full circle, then, it starts reducing itself in the same manner. So, they asked either about its cause or about the wisdom underlying its gradual growth. Both possibilities exist. But the answer given states the wisdom and benefit behind it. Now, if the question itself was concerned with the wisdom and benefit behind the waning and waxing of the new moon, then the answer obviously synchronizes with the question. But, if the question aimed at finding out the cause of the waning and waxing of the new moon, which is far away from the mannerliness of the noble Companions, then the answer, by electing to state its wisdom and benefit rather than its reality, simply hints that finding out the reality of the heavenly bodies is not an area under man's control anyway, and then, for that matter, the knowledge of its reality is not necessary for any practical purpose, neither in this world nor in the Hereafter. Therefore, the question of reality is absurd. What could be asked and what could be explained is that there are certain benefits that accrue to us through the waning and waxing, the setting and the rising of the moon in this manner. Therefore, in response to this, the Holy Prophet g was told that he should tell them that their benefits tied to the moon are that they will find it easy to determine the time factor in their transactions and contracts, and to know about the days of the Hajj. The Lunar Calendar is the Islamic choice This verse tells us no more than that the moon will help identify the count of months and days on which rest transactions and acts of worship, such as, the Hajj. The same subject has been dealt with in Sarah Yanus in the following manner: وَقَدَّرَ‌هُ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ And determined it (the moon) by stations, that you might know the number of the years and the reckoning. (10:5) This tells us that the benefit of having the moon pass through different stages and conditions is that people may find out through it the count of years, months and days. But, in a verse of Sarah Bani Isra'il, this count has been connected to the sun as well in the following words: فَمَحَوْنَا آيَةَ اللَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَا آيَةَ النَّهَارِ‌ مُبْصِرَ‌ةً لِّتَبْتَغُوا فَضْلًا مِّن رَّ‌بِّكُمْ وَلِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ Then We erased the sign of the night and brought out the sign of the day to see, so that you seek the blessing from your Lord and get to know the number of years and the reckoning. (17:12) Although this third verse proves that years and months can be counted with the help of a solar calendar also, yet the words used by the Holy Qur'an with regard to the moon very clearly indicate that the lunar calendar is a fixed choice in the Shari` ah of Islam, specially in prescribed acts of worship which relate to a particular month and its dates; for instance, the months of Ramadan and Hajj, as well as injunctions related to the days of Hajj, Muharram and Lailatul-Qadr لیلۃ القدر are all tied to the sighting of the new moon, all this because in this verse, by saying هِيَ مَوَاقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَالْحَجِّ (They are indicative of time for the people and of the Hajj), it has been established that the lunar calendar is the one to be trusted upon in the sight of Allah, although, the count of months can come out of a solar calendar as well. The Shari'ah of Islam has opted for the lunar calendar because it is based on something which every sighted person can see on the horizon and be informed accordingly; the knowledge of it is equally easy for the scholars, the ignorant, the villagers, the islanders and the dwellers of the mountains. This stands in contrast with the solar calendar which depends on meteorological equipment and mathematical computations which cannot become the common personal experience of everybody so easily. Then comes the matter of religious observances, the ` ibadat عبادات ، where the lunar calendar has been fixed as an obligation. This has also been favoured in social and business transactions because it serves as a basis for the acts of Islamic worship, and a symbol of Islamic identity, notwithstanding the position of the solar calendar which has not been prohibited juristically, the only condition being that the use of the solar calendar should not become so widespread that people forget all about the lunar calendar. If this happens, it would necessarily affect the obligatory ` ibadat عبادات like Fasting and Hajj adversely, a sampling of which is visible in our time, in offices and businesses, government and private, where the solar calendar is being used with such frequency that many people do not seem to even remember all Islamic months by name. Apart from the juristic position of the lunar system, this situation is a deplorable demonstration of our lack of will to approach and uphold such a matter of national and religious identity with a sense of self-respect. It is not difficult to use the solar calendar only in office situations where one has to deal with non-Muslims as well, but for the rest of office correspondence, private dealings and daily requirements the lunar calendar may be used with advantage, that is, if this is done, the user will earn the thawab ثواب of performing a fard ` ala al-kifayah فرض علی الکفایہ (an obligation which, if performed by some, suffices for others), and of course, national identity will be preserved. Ruling From the verse لَيْسَ الْبِرُّ‌ بِأَن تَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِن ظُهُورِ‌هَا (And it is not righteousness that you come into your houses from their backs) comes the ruling that something which the Shari'ah of Islam has not classed as 'necessary' (wajib واجب ) or has not given it the status of an act of ` Ibadah عباداہ ، should not be taken as 'necessary' or an act of ` Ibadah عباداہ on one's own. This is not permissible. Similarly, taking something to be a sin while it is permissible under Islamic law is a sin in itself. This is exactly what those people had done. Entering houses through doors was permissible under religious law, yet they made it out to be a sin, while coming into the house from its back by breaking through the wall was not 'necessary' under the religious law, yet they made it out to be necessary. This was why they were admonished. The reason why bid` at بدعت (innovations in religious matters) are not permissible is that unnecessary things are taken to be necessary like the obligatory - fard, or wajib. Or, things permissible are taken to be forbidden or unlawful. This verse makes it very clear that doing so is prohibited, and incidentally, this gives us the guiding rule in thousands of acts in vogue. The expression وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا (and do not transgress) towards the end of the verse, according to the majority of the commentators means - 'do not go beyond the limit in fighting as to start killing women and children'.

Mereka bertanya kepadamu tentang bulan sabit. Katakanlah, "Bulan sabit itu adalah tanda-tanda waktu bagi manusia dan (bagi ibadah) haji." Dan bukanlah kebajikan memasuki rumah-rumah dari belakangnya, tetapi kebajikan itu ialah kebajikan orang yang bertakwa. Dan masuklah ke rumah-rumah itu dari pintu-pintunya; dan bertakwalah kepada Allah agar kalian beruntung. Al-Aufi meriwayatkan dari Ibnu Abbas bahwa orang-orang bertanya kepada Rasulullah ﷺ tentang bulan sabit. Maka turunlah ayat berikut, yakni firman-Nya: Mereka bertanya kepadamu tentang bulan sabit. Katakanlah, "Bulan sabit itu adalah tanda-tanda waktu bagi manusia." (Al-Baqarah: 189) Yakni dengan melaluinya mereka mengetahui waktu masuknya ibadah mereka, bilangan idah istri-istri, dan waktu haji mereka. Abu Ja'far meriwayatkan dari Ar-Rabi', dari Abul Aliyah, telah sampai sebuah hadits kepada kami bahwa mereka pernah bertanya, "Wahai Rasulullah, mengapa Allah menciptakan hilal (bulan sabit)?" Maka Allah menurunkan firman-Nya: Mereka bertanya kepadamu tentang bulan sabit. Katakanlah "Bulan sabit itu adalah tanda-tanda waktu bagi manusia." (Al-Baqarah: 189) Maksudnya, Allah menjadikan bulan sabit sebagai tanda-tanda waktu puasa kaum muslim dan waktu berbuka mereka, bilangan idah istri-istri, dan tanda waktu agama (ibadah haji) mereka. Hal yang sama diriwayatkan pula dari ‘Atha’, Adh-Dhahhak, Qatadah, As-Suddi, dan Ar-Rabi' ibnu Anas. Abdur Razzaq meriwayatkan, dari Abdul Aziz ibnu Abu Rawwad, dari Nafi', dari Ibnu Umar yang menceritakan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: Allah menjadikan bulan sabit sebagai tanda-tanda waktu bagi manusia, maka berpuasalah kalian karena melihatnya dan berbukalah kalian karena melihatnya. Maka apabila awan menutupi kalian, sempurnakanlah bilangan menjadi tiga puluh hari. Hadits riwayat Imam Hakim di dalam kitab Mustadrak-nya melalui hadits Ibnu Abu Rawwad dengan lafal yang sama. Imam Hakim mengatakan bahwa Ibnu Abu Rawwad adalah orang yang tsiqah, ahli ibadah, seorang mujtahid lagi bernasab terhormat. Maka hadits ini shahih sanadnya, tetapi Imam Al-Bukhari dan Imam Muslim tidak mengetengahkannya. Muhammad ibnu Jabir meriwayatkan dari Qais ibnu Talq, dari ayahnya yang menceritakan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: Allah telah menciptakan bulan sabit. Maka apabila kalian melihat bulan sabit, berpuasalah; dan apabila kalian melihatnya lagi, berbukalah. Tetapi jika awan menutupi kalian, maka sempurnakanlah bilangan bulan kalian menjadi tiga puluh hari. Hal yang sama diriwayatkan melalui hadits Abu Hurairah, juga dari ucapan Ali ibnu Abu Talib Firman Allah ﷻ: Dan bukanlah kebajikan memasuki rumah-rumah dari belakangnya, tetapi kebajikan itu ialah kebajikan orang yang bertakwa. Dan masuklah ke rumah-rumah itu dari pintu-pintunya. (Al-Baqarah: 189) Imam Al-Bukhari mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ubaidillah ibnu Musa, dari Israil, dari Abu Ishaq, dari Al-Barra yang menceritakan bahwa pada mulanya di zaman Jahiliah apabila mereka telah melakukan ihram, mereka memasuki rumahnya dari arah belakangnya. Maka Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala menurunkan firman-Nya: Dan bukanlah kebajikan memasuki rumah-rumah dari belakangnya, tetapi kebajikan itu ialah kebajikan orang yang bertakwa. Dan masuklah ke rumah-rumah itu dari pintu-pintunya. (Al-Baqarah: 189) Hal yang sama diriwayatkan pula oleh Abu Dawud Ath-Thayalisi, dari Syu'bah, dari Abi Ishaq, dari Al-Barra yang menceritakan bahwa orang-orang Anshar pada mulanya bila mereka tiba dari perjalanannya, maka seseorang dari mereka tidak memasuki rumahnya dari arah pintunya, lalu turunlah ayat ini. Al-A'masy menceritakan dari Abu Sufyan, dari Jabir, bahwa dahulu orang-orang Quraisy dikenal dengan nama Humus, mereka selalu masuk dari pintu-pintunya dalam ihram mereka; sedangkan orang-orang Anshar dan semua orang Arab dalam ihram mereka tidak memasukinya dari pintu. Ketika Rasulullah ﷺ sedang berada di sebuah kebun, selanjutnya beliau keluar dari pintunya, tetapi keluar pula bersamanya Qutbah ibnu Amir dari kalangan Anshar. Mereka berkata, "Wahai Rasulullah, sesungguhnya Qutbah ibnu Amir adalah seorang pedagang, sesungguhnya dia telah keluar bersamamu dari pintu itu." Maka Rasul ﷺ bertanya kepada Qutbah, "Apakah yang mendorongmu melakukan demikian?" Qutbah menjawab, "Aku melihat engkau melakukannya, maka aku ikut melakukan seperti apa yang telah engkau lakukan." Rasul ﷺ bersabda, "Sesungguhnya aku adalah seorang Ahmas." Qutbah menjawab, "Sesungguhnya agamaku juga adalah agamamu." Maka Allah menurunkan firman-Nya: Dan bukanlah kebajikan memasuki rumah-rumah dari belakangnya, tetapi kebajikan itu ialah kebajikan orang yang bertakwa. Dan masuklah ke rumah-rumah itu dari pintu-pintunya. (Al-Baqarah: 189) Ibnu Abu Hatim meriwayatkannya pula, juga Al-Aufi, dari Ibnu Abbas dengan lafal yang semisal. Hal yang sama diriwayatkan pula dari Mujahid, Az-Zuhri, Qatadah, Ibrahim An-Nakha'i, As-Suddi, dan Ar-Rabi' ibnu Anas. Al-Hasan Al-Basri mengatakan, dahulu beberapa kaum dari kalangan ahli Jahiliah apabila seseorang dari mereka hendak melakukan suatu perjalanan, lalu ia keluar dari rumahnya memulai perjalanan yang ditujunya. Kemudian sesudah ia keluar, timbul keinginan tetap tinggal dan mengurungkan niat bepergiannya; maka dia tidak memasuki rumahnya dari pintunya, melainkan menaiki tembok bagian belakang. Lalu Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala berfirman: Dan bukanlah kebajikan memasuki rumah-rumah dari belakangnya. (Al-Baqarah: 189), hingga akhir ayat. Muhammad ibnu Ka'b mengatakan, "Seorang lelaki apabila hendak melakukan i'tikaf, ia tidak memasuki rumahnya dari arah pintunya, maka Allah menurunkan ayat ini." ‘Atha’ ibnu Abu Rabah mengatakan bahwa penduduk Yasrib apabila kembali dari hari raya mereka, mereka memasuki rumahnya masing-masing dari arah belakangnya, dan mereka berpendapat bahwa hal tersebut lebih mendekati kepada kebajikan. Maka Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala berfirman: Dan bukanlah kebajikan memasuki rumah-rumah dari belakangnya. (Al-Baqarah: 189) Akhirnya mereka tidak lagi berpendapat bahwa hal tersebut lebih dekat kepada kebajikan. Firman Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala: Dan bertakwalah kalian kepada Allah, agar kalian beruntung. Yakni kerjakanlah apa yang telah diperintahkan oleh Allah kepada kalian dan tinggalkanlah oleh kalian apa yang telah diharamkan Allah bagi kalian. agar kalian beruntung. (Al-Baqarah: 189) Yaitu kelak di hari kemudian. Bila kalian dihadirkan di hadapan Allah, maka kelak Dia akan memberi kalian pahala dan balasannya dengan lengkap dan sempurna.".

Pada ayat ini Allah mengajar Nabi Muhammad ﷺ menjawab pertanyaan sahabat tentang guna dan hikmah "bulan" bagi umat manusia, yaitu untuk keperluan perhitungan waktu dalam melaksanakan urusan ibadah mereka seperti salat, puasa, haji, dan sebagainya serta urusan dunia yang diperlukan. Allah menerangkan perhitungan waktu itu dengan perhitungan bulan kamariah, karena lebih mudah dari perhitungan menurut peredaran matahari (syamsiah) dan lebih sesuai dengan tingkat pengetahuan bangsa Arab pada zaman itu. Para ulama tafsir menjelaskan bahwa banyak dari kaum Ansar, apabila mereka telah mengerjakan ihram atau haji, maka mereka tidak mau lagi memasuki rumah dari pintu yang biasa, tetapi masuk dari pintu belakang, dan itu dianggap sebagai suatu kebajikan. Ayat ini menerangkan bahwa kebajikan itu bukanlah menurut perasaan dan tradisi yang berbau khurafat, seperti memasuki rumah dari belakang atau dari atas, ) tetapi kebajikan itu ialah bertakwa kepada Allah, dan ditetapkan kepada mereka agar memasuki rumah dari pintunya. Menurut saintis, bulan adalah satelit bumi yang berukuran sekitar seperempat dari ukuran bumi. Ia beredar mengelilingi bumi pada jarak rata-rata 384,400 kilometer di bawah tarikan gaya gravitasi bumi. Akibat peredarannya inilah bulan mengalami fase-fase dan di antaranya terjadi fenomena bulan sabit, bulan purnama, bulan baru dan bulan mati. Semuanya terjadi karena posisi bulan dan bumi yang bergeser secara teratur terhadap posisi matahari. Ketika bulan berada diantara bumi dan matahari, sisinya yang gelap menghadap ke bumi sehingga bulan tidak terlihat oleh kita yang berada di bumi. Fase ini dinamakan fase bulan baru. Kemudian bergeser dari fase bulan baru ke fase bulan purnama dan dan dari fase bulan purnama menuju ke fase bulan mati. Pada fase bulan mati bulan kembali tidak nampak sama sekali. Sementara bulan sabit terjadi antara fase bulan baru ke fase bulan separuh pertama (minggu pertama, sebelum bulan purnama) dan antara fase bulan separuh yang kedua (minggu ke empat, setelah purnama) menuju fase bulan mati. Dari fase bulan baru menuju fase bulan purnama maka yang terjadi fase bulan sabit yang nampak seperti benang yang bisa kita lihat di langit barat sesudah matahari tenggelam. Lama kelamaan bulan sabit tersebut menjadi lebar hingga menjadi separuh. Fase bulan ini kita sebut dengan fase bulan separuh. Kemudian tujuh hari setelah fase bulan separuh, kita bisa melihat gambaran penuh dari bulan. Fase bulan ini kita sebut dengan bulan purnama. Tujuh hari kemudian penampakan bulan kembali menyusut sehingga kembali lagi kepada fase bulan separuh. Begitulah seterusnya hingga bulan kembali mengalami fase bulan sabit yang kemudian pada akhirnya dia menghilang. Fase ini kita sebut dengan fase bulan mati. Jadi fase bulan sabit terjadi 2 kali dalam sebulan, yakni di minggu pertama dan minggu ke empat. Jarak antara fase bulan baru ke bulan baru berikutnya atau dari bulan purnama ke bulan purnama berikutnya adalah 29,5306 hari yang kita sebut dengan periode sinodik. Inilah menjadi dasar penanggalan yang dibuat dengan menggunakan sistem kalender peredaran bulan yang kita kenal dengan kalender kamariah. Maha Bijaksana Allah yang telah menciptakan bulan dengan hikmah yang luar biasa terkandung di dalamnya.

DARI HAL HILAL DAN TANYAKANLAH SESUATU KEPADA AHLINYA Dalam beberapa riwayat ada tersebut bahwa beberapa orang sahabat Nabi ﷺ datang bertanya kepada beliau tantang hilal, yaitu bulan sabit sejak hari permulaan bulan sampai kira-kira hari ketujuh. Menurut riwayat Ibnu Asakir dari Ibnu Abbas, walaupun sanad haditsnya dhaif.yang datang bertanya itu ialah Mu'az bin jabal, sahabat Anshar yang terkenal dan Tsalabah bin Usman. Mereka bertanya, “Wahai, utusan Allah. Mengapa bulan sabit itu terbit dan naik mula-mula sangat halusnya, laksana benang, kemudian jadi bertambah besar dan lama-lama jadi penuh (purnama), kemudian surut lagi dan kurang lagi, sampai kecil pula sebagaimana keadaan semula; tidak tetap dalam satu keadaan saja?" Abdullah bin Humaid dan Ibnu jarir membawakan pula riwayat semacam ini yang mereka terima dari Qatadah. Akan tetapi, tidak mereka sebutkan siapa nama orang-orang yang bertanya itu. Ibnu Abi Hatim membawakan riwayat semacam itu pula yang diterimanya dari Abui Aliyah. Demikian juga satu riwayat Ibnu Jarir yang diterimanya dari ar-Rabi' bin Anas. Maka, untuk menjawab pertanyaan yang bertanya itu datanglah ayat ini, “Mereka bertanya kepada engkau dari hal bulan sabit. Katakanlah, “Dia itu adalah waktu-waktu yang ditentukan untuk manusia dan (untuk) haji." (pangkal ayat 189) Dapat dilihat di sini bahwa duduk pertanyaan lain, tetapi dijawab Nabi lain pula. Mereka menanyakan mengapa bulan begitu, bukan menanyakan apa faedah yang kita ambil dari keadaan bulan yang demikian. Ahli ilmu balaghah menyatakan bahwa jawaban Nabi ini sangAllah halusnya menurut ilmu balaghah. Sebab, jawaban itu dipimpin dan dijuruskan kepada hasil yang berfaedah dan yang sesuai dengan kedudukan beliau sebagai utusan Allah membimbing dan membawa petunjuk agama. Sebab, tidaklah pantas atau tidak pada tempatnya (moqam-nya) jika kepada Nabi ditanyakan apa sebab bulan itu mula-mula halus kecil laksana benang, lama-lama besar jadi purnama, akhirnya kembali kecil dan halus lagi sebagai semula. Mengapa tidak tetap saja begitu. Menjawab pertanyaan yang seperti itu bukanlah kewajiban Nabi. Nabi bukan ahli ilmu falak. Sebab itu, beliau berikanlah jawaban yang sesuai dengan kewajiban beliau sebagai Rasul sehingga ke sanalah perhatian yang bertanya dibawa. Maka, beliau katakanlah bahwasanya bulan terbit dengan keadaan yang demikian itu membawa hikmah yang penting sekali bagi kita. Bulan sabit adalah untuk menentukan waktu bagi manusia. Dengan bulan yang demikian halnya, manusia sesama manusia dapat menentukan janji. Dengan bulan demikian, manusia dapat menentukan iddah perempuan setelah bercerai. Dengan bulan demikian, manusia dapat menentukan berapa purnama perempuan telah mengandung. Dan, dengan dia, dapat ditentukan waktu puasa, sampai kepada waktu hari raya dan mengeluarkan zakat sekali setahun, sampai kepada waktu mengerjakan haji. Kemudian, datanglah sambungan ayat, “Dan tidaklah kebajikan itu bahwa kamu masuk ke rumah kamu dari belakangnya, tetapi yang kebajikan ialah barangsiapayang takwa." Menurut penafsiran dari penafsir Abu Ubaidah bahwa sambungan ini adalah senapas dengan yang sebelumnya, yaitu kalau hendak masuk ke rumahmu janganlah dari pintu belakang. Maksudnya kalau hendak menanyakan sesuatu hal kepada seseorang hendaklah pilih soal yang pantas dapat dijawab oleh orang itu. Kalau hendak menanyakan mengapa bulan mulanya laksana sabit, lama-lama penuh dan akhirnya kecil sebagai sabit lagi, janganlah hal itu ditanyakan kepada Nabi, tetapi tanya-kanlah kepada ahli falak. Samalah halnya bertanya begitu sebagai masuk rumah dari pintu belakang. Akan tetapi, kalau ditanyakan kepada Nabi apa hikmah yang dapat diambil dari peredaran bulan demikian, akan dapatlah dijawab oleh Nabi menurut yang selayaknya dan yang sepadan dengan beliau. Akan tetapi, menurut Bukhari dan beberapa perawi hadits yang lain, yang mereka terima dari al-Baraa, di zaman jahiliyyah kalau orang-orang itu naik haji, kalau pekerjaan haji belum selesai, mereka selalu masuk rumah dari pintu belakang. Suatu hal yang tidak perlu dan tidak berasal dari manasik ajaran Nabi Ibrahim. Maka, yang penting bukanlah menambah peraturan haji satu lagi, pulang ke rumah melalui pintu belakang. Yang penting ialah menjaga takwa hati kepada Allah dalam mengerjakan ibadah itu. Selanjutnya, Allah berfirman, “Dan datanglah ke rumah-rumah dari pintu-pintunya, dan takwalah kepada Allah, supaya kamu beroleh kejayaan." (ujung ayat 189) Dari sini tentu kita tidak akan ragu lagi bahwasanya Rasulullah ﷺ sekali-kali tidaklah mencegah umatnya mempelajari apa sebab alam bersedih atas kematian putra beliau yang tercinta itu. Meskipun waktu itu beliau dalam berduka cita, langsung beliau perbaiki kesalahan persangkaan itu dan beliau berkata, “Gerhana Matahari adalah salah satu daripada ayat-ayat (tanda-tanda) kebesaran Allah. Bukanlah dia terjadi karena kematian seseorang" Memang Rasulullah ﷺ diutus Tuhan kepada suatu umat yang pada mulanya ummi, tak pandai tulis-baca, tidak berilmu. Akan tetapi, agama yang beliau bawa bukanlah untuk menetapkan agar mereka terus ummi saja.
