ٱلزُّمَر ٢٣
- ٱللَّهُ Allah
- نَزَّلَ has revealed
- أَحۡسَنَ (the) best
- ٱلۡحَدِيثِ (of) [the] statement
- كِتَٰبٗا a Book
- مُّتَشَٰبِهٗا (its parts) resembling each other
- مَّثَانِيَ oft-repeated
- تَقۡشَعِرُّ Shiver
- مِنۡهُ from it
- جُلُودُ (the) skins
- ٱلَّذِينَ (of) those who
- يَخۡشَوۡنَ fear
- رَبَّهُمۡ their Lord
- ثُمَّ then
- تَلِينُ relax
- جُلُودُهُمۡ their skins
- وَقُلُوبُهُمۡ and their hearts
- إِلَىٰ at
- ذِكۡرِ (the) remembrance
- ٱللَّهِۚ (of) Allah
- ذَٰلِكَ That
- هُدَى (is the) guidance
- ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah
- يَهۡدِي He guides
- بِهِۦ with it
- مَن whom
- يَشَآءُۚ He wills
- وَمَن And whoever
- يُضۡلِلِ Allah lets go astray
- ٱللَّهُ Allah lets go astray
- فَمَا then not
- لَهُۥ for him
- مِنۡ any
- هَادٍ guide
Allāh has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance [i.e., mention] of Allāh. That is the guidance of Allāh by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allāh sends astray - for him there is no guide.
God has revealed the best of discourses, a Book (kitaaban, substitutes for ahsana, 'the best') namely, a Qur'aan, consimilar, in other words, some of its parts are similar to others in terms of [their] arrangement and otherwise, in coupled phrases - [a Book] in which the Promise [of reward] is coupled with the Threat [of punishment], together with other such [couplings] - whereat quiver, at the mention of whose Threat shiver, the skins of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts soften to, they are reassured by, the remembrance of God, that is, at the mention of His Promise. That, Book, is God's guidance, by which He guides whomever He will, of His servants; and whomever God leads astray, for him there is no guide.
The Parable of the Life of this World
Allah says,
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ أَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاء مَاء
See you not that Allah sends down water from the sky,
Allah tells us that water originates in the sky.
This is like the Ayah:
وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَأءِ مَأءً طَهُوراً
and We send down pure water from the sky. (25:48)
So, Allah sends down water from the sky, and it settles in the earth, then He causes it to flow wherever He wills, and He causes springs, great and small, to flow as needed.
Allah says:
فَسَلَكَهُ يَنَابِيعَ فِي الاَْرْضِ
and causes it to penetrate the earth, as water springs,
Sa`id bin Jubayr and `Amir Ash-Sha`bi said that all the water on earth has its origins in the sky.
Sa`id bin Jubayr said, its origins lie in the snow, meaning that snow piles up in the mountains, then settles at the bottom (of the mountains) and springs flow from the bottom of them.
ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُ بِهِ زَرْعًا مُّخْتَلِفًا أَلْوَانُهُ
and afterward thereby produces crops of different colors,
means, then from the water which comes down from the sky or flows from springs in the earth, He brings forth crops of different colors, i.e., different kinds of forms, tastes, scents, benefits, etc.
ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَاهُ مُصْفَرًّا
and afterward they wither and you see them turn yellow;
means, after they have been ripe and fresh, they become old and you see them turn yellow when they have dried out.
ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُ حُطَامًا
then He makes them dry and broken pieces.
means, then they become brittle.
إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَذِكْرَى لاُِوْلِي الاَْلْبَابِ
Verily, in this is a reminder for men of understanding.
means, those who are reminded by this and who learn the lesson from it, that this world is like this -- it is green and fresh and beautiful, then it will become old and ugly. The young man will become a weak, senile old man, and after all of that comes death. The blessed one is the one whose state after death will be good. Allah often likens the life of this world to the way He sends down water from the sky and crops and fruits grow thereby, then they become dry and brittle.
This is like the Ayah:
وَاضْرِبْ لَهُم مَّثَلَ الْحَيَوةِ الدُّنْيَا كَمَأءٍ أَنْزَلْنَـهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَاخْتَلَطَ بِهِ نَبَاتُ الاٌّرْضِ فَأَصْبَحَ هَشِيمًا تَذْرُوهُ الرِّياحُ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مُّقْتَدِرًا
And put forward to them the example of the life of this world:it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is able to do everything. (18:45)
The People of Truth and the People of Misguidance are not Equal
Allah says,
أَفَمَن شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرَهُ لِلِْسْلَمِ فَهُوَ عَلَى نُورٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِ
Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is in light from his Lord,
means, is this person equal to the one who is hard-hearted and far from the truth?
This is like the Ayah:
أَوَمَن كَانَ مَيْتًا فَأَحْيَيْنَـهُ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُ نُورًا يَمْشِي بِهِ فِى النَّاسِ كَمَن مَّثَلُهُ فِي الظُّلُمَـتِ لَيْسَ بِخَارِجٍ مِّنْهَا كَذَلِكَ
Is he who was dead and We gave him life and set for him a light (i.e. Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men -- like him who is in the darkness (i.e., disbelief) from which he can never come out. (6:122)
Allah says:
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْقَاسِيَةِ قُلُوبُهُم مِّن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
So, woe to those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allah!
meaning, they do not become soft when Allah is mentioned, and they do not feel humility or fear, and they do not understand.
أُوْلَيِكَ فِي ضَلَلٍ مُبِينٍ
They are in plain error!
The Description of the Qur'an
Here Allah praises His Book, the Noble Qur'an, which was revealed to His noble Messenger.
Allah says,
اللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابًا مُّتَشَابِهًا مَّثَانِيَ
Allah has sent down the Best Statement, a Book, its parts resembling each other (and) oft-repeated.
Mujahid said,
This means that the entire Qur'an's parts resemble each other and are oft-repeated.
Qatadah said,
One Ayah resembles another and one letter resembles another.
Ad-Dahhak said,
It is oft-repeated so that people will understand what their Lord tells them.
Ikrimah and Al-Hasan said,
There may be an Ayah in one Surah, and another Ayah in another Surah that resembles it.
Sa`id bin Jubayr narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:
Oft-repeated means that parts of the Qur'an resemble one another and repeat one another.
Some of the scholars said that it was narrated from Sufyan bin `Uyaynah that
مُّتَشَابِهًا مَّثَانِيَ
(its parts resembling each other (and) oft-repeated), means,
that some passages of the Qur'an may sometimes refer to one thing, so they resemble one another, and sometimes they mention a thing and its opposite. Such as when the believers then the disbelievers are mentioned, or when Paradise then Hell are described, and so on, and this is the meaning of oft-repeated.
Examples include the Ayat:
إِنَّ الاٌّبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
وَإِنَّ الْفُجَّارَ لَفِى جَحِيمٍ
Verily, the most righteous will be in delight; and verily, the most wicked will be in the blazing Fire (Hell). (82:13-14)
كَلَّ إِنَّ كِتَابَ الفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٍ
(Nay! Truly, the Record of the most wicked is (preserved) in Sijjin), until
كَلَّ إِنَّ كِتَابَ الاَْبْرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ
(Nay! Verily, the Record of the most righteous is (preserved) in `Illiyyin), (83:7-18)
هَذَا ذِكْرٌ وَإِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ لَحُسْنَ مَأبٍ
(This is a Reminder. And verily, for those who have Taqwa is a good final return (Paradise)), until;
هَذَا
وَإِنَّ لِلطَّاغِينَ لَشَرَّ مَأبٍ
(This is so! And for those who transgress, there will be an evil final return (Fire)). (38:49-55)
And there are other similar passages. All of this has to do with it being oft-repeated, i.e., when two meanings are referred to. But when a passage is about one thing, with some parts of it resembling others, this is;
its parts resembling each other.
This is not the same as the Mutashabihat mentioned in the Ayah:
مِنْهُ ايَـتٌ مُّحْكَمَـتٌ هُنَّ أُمُّ الْكِتَـبِ وَأُخَرُ مُتَشَـبِهَـتٌ
In it are Ayat that are entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book; and others not entirely clear. (3:7)
that refers to something else altogether.
تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it. Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah.
means, this is the description of the righteous, when they hear the Words of the Compeller, the Protector, the Almighty, the Oft-Forgiving, because they understand the promises and warnings contained therein. The frightening words and threats make their skin shiver from fear.
ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
(Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah), because of their hope for His mercy and kindness. They are unlike others, the wicked, immoral sinners, in a number of ways:
- First They listen to the recitation of the Ayat (of the Qur'an), while those (sinners) listen to poetic verse recited by female singers.
- Second When the Ayat of Ar-Rahman are recited to them, they fall down in prostration weeping, with the proper attitude of fear, hope, love, understanding and knowledge, as Allah says:
إِنَّمَا الْمُوْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـتُهُ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَـناً وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَوةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ
أُوْلـيِكَ هُمُ الْمُوْمِنُونَ حَقّاً لَّهُمْ دَرَجَـتٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Ayat are recited unto them, they increase their faith; and they put their trust in their Lord; Who perform the Salah and spend out of that We have provided them. It is they who are the believers in it.
For them are grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness and a generous provision (i.e., Paradise). (8:2-4)
وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُواْ بِـَايَـتِ رَبِّهِمْ لَمْ يَخِرُّواْ عَلَيْهَا صُمّاً وَعُمْيَاناً
And those who, when they are reminded of the Ayat of their Lord, fall not on them (as if they were) deaf and blind. (25:73)
When they hear the Ayat of Allah, they are not too busy to pay attention to them; they listen to them and understand their meanings. So they act upon them and prostrate when they hear them, out of understanding, not out of ignorance and blind following of others.
- Third they adhere to the correct etiquette when they listen to them. As the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, used to do when they listened to the words of Allah recited by the Messenger of Allah. Their skin would shiver, and their hearts would soften to the remembrance of Allah. They did not shout or do other actions that are not natural; on the contrary, they would sit quietly with the proper attitude of fear, in an unparalleled fashion. They attained the victory of praise from their Lord in this world and the Hereafter.
Abdur-Razzaq said, Ma`mar told us that Qatadah, may Allah have mercy on him, recited,
تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
(The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it. Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah), and said,
`This is the characteristic of the friends of Allah; Allah has described them in this manner, saying that their skin shivers, their eyes weep and their hearts find rest to the remembrance of Allah. He did not say that they lose their minds and swoon; that is the characteristic of the followers of innovation, and that comes from the Shaytan.'
Allah's saying:
ذَلِكَ هُدَى اللَّهِ يَهْدِي بِهِ مَنْ يَشَاء
That is the guidance of Allah. He guides therewith whom He wills;
means, this is the characteristic of those whom Allah has guided, and anyone who does anything different is one of those whom Allah has sent astray.
وَمَن يُضْلِلْ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ هَادٍ
and whomever Allah sends astray, for him there is no guide.
The Final Destination of the Disbelievers
Allah says,
أَفَمَن يَتَّقِي بِوَجْهِهِ سُوءَ الْعَذَابِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
Is he then, who will confront with his face the awful torment on the Day of Resurrection?
وَقِيلَ لِلظَّالِمِينَ
And it will be said to the wrongdoers:
He will be rebuked and he and the evildoers like him will be told:
ذُوقُوا مَا كُنتُمْ تَكْسِبُونَ
Taste what you used to earn!
`Is this like the one who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection' as Allah says:
أَفَمَن يَمْشِى مُكِبّاً عَلَى وَجْهِهِ أَهْدَى أَمَّن يَمْشِى سَوِيّاً عَلَى صِرَطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
Is he who walks prone on his face, more rightly guided, or he who walks upright on the straight way; (67:22)
يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى النَّارِ عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُواْ مَسَّ سَقَرَ
The Day they will be dragged on their faces into the Fire (it will be said to them):Taste you the touch of Hell! (54:48)
and,
أَفَمَن يُلْقَى فِى النَّارِ خَيْرٌ أَم مَّن يَأْتِى ءَامِناً يَوْمَ الْقِيَـمَةِ
Is he who is cast into the Fire better or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection? (41:40)
In each of these Ayat, it was sufficient to refer to one of the two groups.
Allah's statement,
كَذَّبَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ فَأَتَاهُمْ الْعَذَابُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
Those before them denied, and so the torment came on them from directions they perceived not.
means, the previous generations who denied the Messengers were destroyed by Allah for their sins. And none had they to protect them from Allah
فَأَذَاقَهُمُ اللَّهُ الْخِزْيَ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا
So Allah made them to taste the disgrace in the present life,
means, by means of the punishment and revenge which He sent down upon them, and the rejoicing of the believers for what happened to them. So, let those who are addressed beware, for they have rejected the noblest of the Messengers and the Seal of the Prophets. And what Allah has promised them of severe punishment in the Hereafter is worse than whatever befell them in this world.
Allah says:
وَلَعَذَابُ الاْخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ
but greater is the torment of the Hereafter if they only knew!
The Parable of Shirk
Allah says,
وَلَقَدْ ضَرَبْنَا لِلنَّاسِ فِي هَذَا الْقُرْانِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلٍ
And indeed We have put forth for men, in this Qur'an every kind of parable,
means, `We have explained things to mankind in it (the Qur'an) by setting forth examples and parables.'
لَّعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ
in order that they may remember.
Because parables bring the meaning closer to people's minds.
As Allah says:
ضَرَبَ لَكُمْ مَّثَلً مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ
He sets forth for you a parable from yourselves. (30:28)
meaning, `so that you may learn it from yourselves.' in Order that they may have Taqwa of Him.
And Allah says:
وَتِلْكَ الاٌّمْثَالُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ وَمَا يَعْقِلُهَأ إِلاَّ الْعَـلِمُونَ
And these are the examples We give for mankind; but none will understand them except those who have knowledge (of Allah). (29:43)
قُرانًا عَرَبِيًّا غَيْرَ ذِي عِوَجٍ
An Arabic Qur'an, without any crookedness (therein),
means, it is in a plain Arabic tongue, with no crookedness, deviation or confusion. It is plain, clear proof. Allah has made it like this and has revealed it like this,
لَّعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ
in order that they may have Taqwa of Him,
means, in order that they may heed the warnings contained therein, and strive to attain the promises therein.
Then Allah says
ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلً رَّجُلً فِيهِ شُرَكَاء مُتَشَاكِسُونَ
Allah puts forth a parable:a man belonging to many partners disputing with one another,
meaning, they were disputing concerning that slave in whom they all had a share.
وَرَجُلً سَلَمًا لِّرَجُلٍ
and a (slave) man belonging entirely to one master.
means, no one owned him except that one man.
هَلْ يَسْتَوِيَانِ مَثَلً
Are those two equal in comparison?
meaning, they are not the same.
By the same token, the idolator who worships other gods besides Allah and the sincere believer who worships none besides Allah, with no partner or associate, are not equal. What comparison can there be between them?
Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, Mujahid and others said,
This Ayah is the parable of the idolator and the sincere believer.
Because this parable is so clear and obvious,
Allah then says:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
All the praises and thanks be to Allah!
i.e., for establishing proof against them.
بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
But most of them know not.
means, and for this reason they associate others in worship with Allah.
The fact that the Messenger of Allah and Quraysh will die, and how They will dispute before Allah
Allah's saying;
إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ
Verily, you will die, and verily, they (too) will die.
This is one of the Ayat which Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, quoted when the Messenger of Allah died, so that the people would realize that he had really died.
Another Ayah which he quoted was:
وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلاَّ رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ أَفإِيْن مَّاتَ أَوْ قُتِلَ انقَلَبْتُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَـبِكُمْ وَمَن يَنقَلِبْ عَلَى عَقِبَيْهِ فَلَن يَضُرَّ اللَّهَ شَيْياً وَسَيَجْزِى اللَّهُ الشَّـكِرِينَ
Muhammad is no more than a Messenger, and indeed (many) Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will do to Allah; and Allah will give reward to those who are grateful. (3:144)
The meaning of this Ayah is that you will certainly depart this world and be gathered before Allah in the Hereafter. You will dispute the issues of Tawhid and Shirk before Allah, things over which you disputed in this world, and He will judge between you with truth, and He is the Judge, the All-Knowing. So, He will save the sincere believers who worship Him alone, and He will punish the disbelievers who deny His Oneness and associate others in worship with Him.
Although this Ayah speaks about the believers and disbelievers, and how they will dispute in the Hereafter, it also includes all disputants in this world, for their disputes will come back to them in the Hereafter.
Ibn Abi Hatim, may Allah have mercy on him, recorded that Ibn Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
When the Ayah
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ
Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord.
was revealed, Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, `O Messenger of Allah, will we repeat our disputes?'
He said, Yes.
He (Az-Zubayr) said, `This is a very serious matter.'
Ahmad recorded from Az-Zubayr bin Al-`Awwam, may Allah be pleased with him, that when this Surah was revealed to the Messenger of Allah:
إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ
Verily, you will die, and verily, they (too) will die. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord.
Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, O Messenger of Allah, will the sins that we committed against others in this world be repeated for us?
He said,
نَعَمْ لَيُكَرَّرَنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ حَتْى يُوَدَّى إِلَى كُلِّ ذِي حَقَ حَقُّه
Yes, they will be repeated until everyone who is entitled will have his rights restored to him.
Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, By Allah, it is a very serious matter.
It was also recorded by At-Tirmidhi, who said Hasan Sahih.
Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُون
(Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord), means,
the truthful one will dispute with the liar, the oppressed will dispute with the oppressor, the one who is guided will dispute with the one who is misguided and the weak will dispute with the arrogant.
Ibn Mandah recorded in Kitab Ar-Ruh that Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
The people will dispute on the Day of Resurrection, to the extent that the soul will dispute with the body. The soul will say to the body, `You did such and such,' and the body will say to the soul, `You told me to do it and you tempted me.'
Then Allah will send an angel to judge between them, and he will say, `You two are like a man who cannot walk but can see, and a man who cannot see but can walk.'
They went into a garden and the one who could not walk said to the one who was blind, `I see fruit there, but I cannot reach it.'
The blind man said, `Climb on me and get it.'
So he climbed on him and got it. So which of them is the wrongdoer
They will say, `Both of them.'
The angel will say to them, `You have passed judgement against yourselves.'
The body was a means of transportation for the soul.
Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Sa`id bin Jubayr said that Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
This Ayah was revealed and we did not know what it was revealed about:
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُون
(Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord).
He said,
We said, what will we dispute about? There is no dispute between us and the People of the Book, so what will we dispute about until the Fitnah occurred.
Then Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
This is what our Lord promised us we would dispute about.

Verse 23 opens with the words: اللَّـهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابًا مُّتَشَابِهًا مَّثَانِيَ (Allah has sent down the best discourse, a book containing subjects resembling each other, mentioned again and again). In the verse previous to it, the state of the faithful servants of Allah was mentioned as: يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقَوْلَ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ أَحْسَنَهُ (who listen to what is said, then, follow the best of it - 39:18). Here, in the verse under study (23), we have been told that the whole Qur'an is 'ahsan-ul-hadith,' the best of what is said. The word: حَدِیث (Hadith) literally means the speech or account that is related. The outcome of calling Qur'an, 'ahsan-ul-hadith, is that, out of everything human beings say or relate, the Qur'an remains the most eloquent. Onwards from here, some attributes of the Qur'an have been mentioned: (1) It is: كِتَابًا مُّتَشَابِهًا (a book containing subjects resembling each other). At this place, the word: مُتَشَابِہ (mutashabih) means resembling each other or mutually corresponding, that is, the subjects dealt with in the Qur'an are related to each other, and are similar. So much so that one verse gets to be explained or confirmed by another verse. This 'word' is free of contradiction and conflict. (2) The second attribute is: مَثَانِی (mathani) which is the plural form of: مَثنٰی (mathna) which means repeated. The sense is that a subject is taken up repeatedly in the Qur'an to help make it settle down in one's mind. (3) As for the third attribute, it was described in very eloquent words by saying: تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ (shivered from which are the skins of those who have awe of their Lord.) that is, 'so overwhelmed and apprehensive the God-fearing become before the greatness of Allah that they, when reciting the Qur'an, are gripped with such an state of awe that it makes their hair stand on end.' (4) The fourth attribute has been identified as: ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّـهِ (Then, their skins and their hearts become soft enough to tend to the remembrance of Allah.), that is, the recitation of the Qur'an affects them in two ways. First, as said immediately above, when they hear the warnings of punishment, it makes their hair stand on end. Then they listen to the verses promising mercy and forgiveness which takes them to a state when their bodies and hearts turn tenderized, mellowed in the remembrance of Allah. Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr ؓ says that this used to be the common emotional state of the noble Sahabah - when the Qur'an was recited before them, tear would be rolling down their eyes, and the hair would be standing on end. It has been narrated by Sayyidna ` Abdullah Ibn ` Abbas ؓ that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said, "A servant over whose body hair would stand on end due to the fear of Allah, then, Allah Ta’ ala forbids the Fire from ever touching his body. (Qurtubi)

Allah telah menurunkan perkataan yang paling baik (yaitu) Al-Qur'an yang serupa (mutu ayat-ayatnya) lagi berulang-ulang, gemetar karenanya kulit orang-orang yang takut kepada Tuhannya, kemudian menjadi tenang kulit dan hati mereka di waktu mengingat Allah. Itulah petunjuk Allah, dengan kitab itu Dia menunjuki siapa yang dikehendaki-Nya. Dan barang siapa yang disesatkan Allah, maka tidak ada seorang pun pemberi petunjuk baginya. Ini merupakan pujian dari Allah ﷻ yang ditujukan kepada kitab-Nya, yaitu Al-Qur'an yang Dia turunkan kepada rasul-Nya yang mulia. Allah ﷻ berfirman: Allah telah menurunkan perkataan yang paling baik (yaitu) Al-Qur'an yang serupa (mutu ayat-ayatnya) lagi berulang-ulang. (Az-Zumar: 23) Mujahid mengatakan bahwa yang dimaksud adalah kitab Al-Qur'an, semuanya serupa mutu ayat-ayatnya lagi berulang-ulang.
Qatadah mengatakan suatu ayat serupa dengan ayat lain, dan suatu huruf sama dengan huruf lainnya. Ad-Dahhak mengatakan bahwa yang dimaksud dengan masani ialah mengulang-ulang bacaannya agar mereka memahami apa yang diturunkan dari Tuhannya. Ikrimah dan Al-Hasan mengatakan bahwa Allah menyebut qada secara berulang-ulang di dalam Al-Qur'an. Al-Hasan menambahkan bahwa di dalam surat terdapat suatu ayat, dan di surat yang lain terdapat ayat yang semisal dengan ayat tersebut.
Abdur Rahman ibnu Zaid ibnu Aslam mengatakan bahwa masani ialah diulang-ulang; kisah mengenai Musa, Saleh, Hud, dan para nabi lainnya disebutkan secara berulang-ulang di dalam Al-Qur'an di berbagai tempat yang cukup banyak. Sa'id ibnu Jubair telah meriwayatkan dari Ibnu Abbas r.a, bahwa masani ialah sebagian dari Al-Qur'an serupa dengan sebagian yang lainnya dan satu sama lainnya saling memperkuat.
Sebagian ulama mengatakan, juga menurut apa yang diriwayatkan dari Sufyan ibnu Uyaynah disebutkan bahwa makna firman-Nya: yang serupa (mutu ayat-ayatnya) lagi berulang-ulang. (Az-Zumar: 23) Sesungguhnya konteks-konteks Al-Qur'an itu adakalanya berkaitan dengan satu pengertian, maka yang ini dinamakan ayat-ayat yang mutasyabih. Adakalanya disebutkan sesuatu dan lawan katanya, seperti penyebutan tentang orang-orang mukmin dan disusul dengan sebutan tentang orang-orang kafir, sebutan tentang gambaran surga dan gambaran neraka, dan subjek-subjek lainnya, maka yang ini dinamakan masani, seperti yang terdapat pada firman-Nya: Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang banyak berbakti benar-benar berada dalam surga yang penuh kenikmatan, dan sesungguhnya orang-orang yang durhaka benar-benar berada dalam neraka. (Al-Infitar: 13-14) Dan firman Allah ﷻ: Sekali-kali jangan curang, karena sesungguhnya kitab orang-orang yang durhaka tersimpan dalam sijjin. (Al-Mutaffifin: 7) sampai dengan firman-Nya: sekali-kali tidak, sesungguhnya kitab orang-orang yang berbakti itu (tersimpan) dalam Illiyyin. (Al-Mutaffifin: 18) Juga firman Allah ﷻ: Ini adalah kehormatan (bagi mereka) dan sesungguhnya bagi orang-orang yang bertakwa benar-benar (disediakan) tempat kembali yang baik. (Shad: 49) sampai dengan firman-Nya: Beginilah (keadaan mereka).
Dan sesungguhnya bagi orang-orang yang durhaka benar-benar (disediakan) tempat kembali yang buruk. (Shad: 55) Dan konteks-konteks semacam ini termasuk ke dalam pengertian masani yakni mengandung dua makna. Adapun jika konteksnya mengandung pengertian yang sama, sebagian darinya serupa dengan sebagian yang lain, maka disebut dengan istilah mutasyabih, tetapi bukan mutasyabih yang disebutkan di dalam firmanNya: Di antara (isi) nya ada ayat-ayat yang muhkamat, itulah pokok-pokok isi Al-Qur'an dan yang lain (ayat-ayat) mutasyabihat (Ali Imran: 7) Yang ini mengandung pengertian yang lain.
Firman Allah ﷻ: gemetar karenanya kulit orang-orang yang takut kepada Tuhannya, kemudian menjadi tenang kulit dan hati mereka di waktu mengingat Allah. (Az-Zumar: 23) Yakni demikianlah sifat orang-orang yang banyak berbakti di saat mendengar Kalamullah Yang Mahakuasa, Mahaperkasa lagi Maha Pengampun, disebabkan apa yang mereka pahami darinya menyangkut janji, kecaman, dan ancaman yang membuat gemetar kulit tubuh mereka (merinding) karena takut kepada Allah ﷻ kemudian menjadi tenang kulit dan hati mereka di waktu mengingat Allah. (Az-Zumar: 23) karena hati mereka penuh harap terhadap limpahan rahmat-Nya dan kasih sayang-Nya; sikap mereka berbeda jauh dengan orang lain yang pendurhaka ditinjau dari berbagai seginya.
Pertama. Bila mereka mendengarkan bacaan Al-Qur'an, maka mereka mendengarkannya sebagai Al-Qur'an yang dibacakan, sedangkan selain mereka mendengarnya bagaikan mendengar nyanyian dan kemerduan suaranya saja. Kedua. Apabila dibacakan kepada mereka ayat-ayat Tuhan Yang Maha Pemurah, maka mereka menyungkur bersujud seraya menangis dengan penuh etika dan rasa takut, rasa harap dan rasa cinta, serta penuh dengan pemahaman dan pengertian.
Sebagaimana yang disebutkan dalam ayat lain melalui firman-Nya: Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang beriman itu adalah mereka yang apabila disebut nama Allah gemetarlah hati mereka, dan apabila dibacakan kepada mereka ayat-ayat-Nya, bertambahlah iman mereka, (karenanya) dan kepada Tuhanlah mereka bertawakal, (yaitu) orang-orang yang mendirikan salat dan menafkahkan sebagian dari rezeki yang Kami berikan kepada mereka. Itulah orang-orang yang beriman dengan sebenar-benarnya. Mereka akan memperoleh beberapa derajat ketinggian di sisi Tuhannya dan ampunan serta rezeki (nikmat) yang mulia. (Al-Anfal: 2-4) Dan firman-Nya: Dan orang-orang yang apabila diberi peringatan dengan ayat-ayat Tuhan mereka, mereka tidaklah menghadapinya sebagai orang-orang yang tuli dan buta. (Al-Furqan: 73) Yakni apabila mereka mendengar Kalamullah dibacakan, maka mereka tidak sibuk dengan yang lainnya, bahkan mnedengarkannya dengan penuh ketaatan dan memahami semua makna yang terkandung di dalamnya, lalu meresapkannya ke dalam kalbu mereka.
Karena itulah maka mereka mengamalkannya dan bersujud padanya dengan penuh pengetahuan dan pengertian, bukan karena tidak mengerti atau membebek kepada orang lain. Ketiga. Mereka selalu menjaga etika dan sopan santun saat mendengarkannya, sebagaimana yangtelah dilakukan oleh para sahabat saat mereka mendengar Kalamullah yang dibacakan oleh Rasulullah ﷺ Kulit tubuh mereka bergetar, kemudian hati mereka menjadi lunak di waktu mengingat Allah. Mereka tidak ribut dan tidak pula memaksakan diri dengan apa yang bukan pembawaan diri mereka, bahkan mereka memiliki keteguhan, ketenangan, etika, dan rasa takut kepada Allah yang tidak ada seorang pun setara dengan mereka dalam hal ini.
Karena itulah mereka beruntung mendapat pujian dari Tuhan Yang Mahatinggi di dunia ini dan di akhirat nanti. Abdur Razzaq mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ma'mar yang mengatakan bahwa Qatadah rahimahullah membaca firman-Nya: gemetar karenanya kulit orang-orang yang takut kepada Tuhannya, kemudian menjadi tenang kulit dan hati mereka di waktu mengingat Allah. (Az-Zumar: 23) Qatadah mengatakan bahwa inilah sifat kekasih-kekasih Allah.
Allah menyifati mereka bahwa kulit mereka bergetar, mata mereka menangis, serta hati mereka lunak di waktu mengingat Allah. Allah tidak menyifati mereka hilang akal dan pingsan, karena sesungguhnya hal ini merupakan ciri khas ahli bid'ah, dan perbuatan ini berasal dari setan. As-Saddi mengatakan sehubungan dengan firman-Nya: kemudian menjadi tenang kulit dan hati mereka di waktu mengingat Allah. (Az-Zumar: 23) Yakni ingat akan janji Allah ﷻ Firman Allah ﷻ: Itulah petunjuk Allah, dengan kitab itu Dia menunjuki siapa yang dikehendaki-Nya dari kalangan hamba-hamba-Nya. (Az-Zumar: 23) Yaitu demikianlah sifat orang yang diberi petunjuk oleh Allah; dan orang yang mempunyai sifat yang berbeda dengan itu, maka dia termasuk orang yang disesatkan oleh Allah ﷻ: Dan barang siapa yang disesatkan Allah, maka tidak ada seorang pun pemberi petunjuk baginya. (Az-Zumar: 23).
Allah telah menurunkan perkataan yang memiliki susunan kata dan kandungan paling baik, yaitu Al-Qur'an yang serupa keindahan susunan antara ayat-ayatnya lagi disebut berulang-ulang baik redaksi, hukum, pelajaran, maupun kisahnya agar membawa pengaruh kuat pada diri pembacanya. Allah menurunkan Al-Qur'an yang gemetar karenanya kulit orang-orang yang takut kepada Tuhannya ketika mendengar per-ingatan dan ancaman di dalamnya, kemudian menjadi tenang kulit dan hati mereka ketika mengingat Allah dan mendengar berita serta janji yang menggembirakan. Itulah petunjuk Allah bagi orang-orang yang mau mendengarkan; dengan Kitab itu Dia memberi petunjuk kepada siapa yang Dia kehendaki. Dan barang siapa dibiarkan sesat dari jalan kebenaran oleh Allah lantaran lebih memilih jalan kesesatan dan berpaling dari kebenaran daripada mengikuti tuntunan Rasulullah, maka tidak seorang pun yang dapat memberi-nya petunjuk dan menuntunnya menuju jalan kebenaran. 24. Maka, apakah orang-orang yang tangannya terbelenggu lalu berusaha melindungi diri dengan wajahnya untuk menghindari azab yang buruk pada hari Kiamat sama dengan orang mukmin yang selamat dari azab dan berhasil masuk surga' Tentu tidak sama. Dan dikatakan kepada orang-orang yang berbuat zalim dan syirik, 'Rasakanlah olehmu balasan atas apa yang telah kamu kerjakan berupa kekafiran dan kemusyrikan di dunia. '.
Allah menerangkan bahwa Dia menurunkan perkataan yang paling baik, yaitu Al-Qur'an yang mulia, sebahagian ayat-ayatnya mempunyai kemiripan baik dalam menjelaskan hukum-hukum, kebenaran, pelajaran, mengemukakan hujah, hikmah-hikmah, dan sebagainya, sebagaimana beberapa bagian air menyerupai beberapa bagian udara, beberapa bagian suatu negeri menyerupai beberapa bagian negeri yang lain. Karena ada suatu kisah diulang-ulang menyebutnya di beberapa tempat, demikian pula perintah-perintah, larangan-larangan, dan sebagainya. Orang-orang yang beriman, bila mereka mendengar bacaan Al-Qur'an meremang bulu romanya, dan bergoncang hatinya karena takut kepada Allah. Hal itu mendorong hati mereka mengikuti semua perintah-perintah Allah dan menghentikan larangan-larangan-Nya. Jiwa mereka menjadi hidup, semangat mereka bertambah untuk melaksanakan amal-amal yang saleh dan berjihad di jalan-Nya.
Dengan Al-Qur'an, Allah memberikan petunjuk kepada hamba-hamba-Nya, membimbing orang-orang yang dikehendaki-Nya ke jalan yang lurus serta mempertebal iman di dalam hatinya. Tetapi orang yang disesatkan hatinya, mereka hampa dan kosong, mereka tidak akan memperoleh manfaat sedikit pun dari Al-Qur'an itu.
SEBAIK-BAIK KATA
“Maka apakah orang yang dilapangkan Allah dadanya untuk menerima Islam, lalu dia beroleh cahaya dari Tuhannya?"
(pangkal ayat 22)
Ayat ini pun bersifat pertanyaan, tetapi pertanyaan yang berisi bantahan. Yaitu bahwasanya orang yang dibukakan Allah hatinya menerima Islam, sehingga dadanya jadi lapang, jiwanya jadi tenteram tidaklah serupa dengan orang yang kesat hati, tertutup seketika kebenaran akan masuk. “Maka celakalah bagi orang yang kesal hati mereka dari mengingat Allah." Orang semacam itu akan tetap dalam kegelapan pikiran, rongga hatinya tidak akan dimasuki petunjuk sedikit pun. “Orang-orang itu adalah dalam kesesatan yang nyata." (ujung ayat 22)
“Allah telah menurunkan yang sebaik-baik kata."

Yang dimaksud ialah ayat-ayat Al-Qur'an yang diturunkan Allah kepada Nabi Muhammad ﷺ itu. Dikatakan sebaik-baik kata, karena susun bahasanya yang mengatasi segala susunan bahasa yang pernah ada, baik di zaman dia diturunkan atau untuk selanjutnya."Kitab yang serupa dan berulang." Namun serupa-serupa dan berulang, tidak pernah membosankan, bahkan bertambah dibaca bertambah menarik hati. “Gemetar karenanya kulit orang-orang yang takut kepada Tuhan mereka," yaitu apabila mereka mendengar atau membaca ayat-ayat yang menerangkan bagaimana hebat dahysat dan ngeri adzab neraka bagi barangsiapa yang tidak mau melaksanakan perintah Allah.
"Kemudian lembutlah kulit mereka dan hati mereka kepada mengingat Allah." Artinya ialah bahwa orang yang beriman bertambahlah imannya dari sebab mendengar atau membaca ayat-ayat yang serupa-serupa atau berulang itu. Akan terus demikianlah orang yang beriman. Walaupun misalnya belum mereka paham makna dan isinya, baru mendengar bunyinya ketika dibaca saja, kalau bacaannya itu dilakukan dengan khusyu, yang mendengarkan bertambah khusyu pula. “Itulah dia petunjuk Allah yang ditunjuki-Nya dengan dia barangsiapa yang Dia kehendaki." Orang-orang itulah yang dibukakan hatinya menerima kebenaran, condong hatinya kepada jalan yang lurus, merdu didengarnya suara Al-Qur'an dan masuk ke dalam jiwanya,
“Dan barangsiapa yang disesatkan oleh Allah maka tidaklah ada baginya yang akan menunjuki."
(ujung ayat 23)
Sehingga muntahlah telinga mendengarkan suara Al-Qur'an, benci mendengar suara adzan, dan lebih condong telinga mendengarkan nyanyian cinta di radio dan televisi, mencemooh terhadap segala seruan kebenaran.
“Maka apakah orang yang memelihara mukanya dari keburukan adzab di hari Kiamat?"
(pangkal ayat 24)
Yaitu bahwasanya tidaklah sama nasib terakhir dari orang yang memelihara wajahnya dari lembaian api neraka di hari Kiamat kelak dengan orang yang dalam hidup hanya berbuat maksiat, tidak peduli halal haram, tidak mengacuhkan batas-batas aturan yang ditentukan oleh Allah.
“Dan dikatakan kepada orang-orang yang Zalim, ‘Rasakanlah olehmu balasan dari apa yang telah kamu usahakan.'"
(ujung ayat 24)
Begitulah nasib dari orang-orang yang tidak memelihara wajahnya dari lembaran api neraka itu.
“Telah mendustakan orang-orang yang sebelum mereka."
(pangkal ayat 25)
Ayat ini adalah peringatan yang disuruh sampaikan oleh Allah kepada musyrikin yang menolak dan menyangkal seruan Rasul, Muhammad ﷺ di waktu itu.
“Maka datanglah adzab kepada mereka dari arah yang tidak mereka sadari."
(ujung ayat 25)
Ada yang ditenggelamkan oleh topan, ada yang disapu bersih oleh angin lembubu yang sangat dahsyat, ada yang negerinya ditunggangbalikkan dengan gempa, ada yang dimusnahkan oleh penyakit dan ada yang dihancurkan dengan bunyi sorak yang sangat keras.
“Maka Allah rasakan kepada mereka kehinaan di dalam hidup di dunia."
(pangkal ayat 26)
Segala adzab yang mereka derita itu, sebagai gempa bumi, negeri ditunggang-balikkan, angin ribut menghancurkan negeri dan sebagainya itu masihlah termasuk adzab di dunia. Mereka menjadi hina, rumah tangga hancur, kampung halaman musnah, negeri laksana dialahkan garuda, tinggal sebagai padang tekukur yang habis musnah manusianya. Semuanya itu masih kecil jika dibandingkan dengan adzab yang akan mereka derita di akhirat. “Dan adzab di akhirat adalah lebih besar, kalau adalah mereka mengetahui." (ujung ayat 26)
“Dan sesungguhnya telah Kami perbuat bagi manusia di dalam Al-Qur'an ini dan berbagai-bagai perumpamaan."

Memang banyaklah Allah membuat perumpamaan di dalam Al-Qur'an. Bahkan sebagaimana tersebut di dalam surah al-Baqarah bahwa Allah tidak segan-segan membuat perumpamaan dengan kutu yang kecil.
“Supaya mereka semuanya beringat-ingat."
(ujung ayat 27)
Arti beringat-ingat ialah bahwa dengan perumpamaan-perumpamaan itu apa yang diperumpamakan itu lekas saat dipahamkan dan saat diingat, bagi mencerdaskan pikiran. Karena memang banyak sekali hal yang patut diumpamakan. Ini pun termasuk dalam rangka pertama dalam cara berdakwah, yaitu bil hikmati; dengan memakai hikmat kebijaksanaan.
“Yaitu Al-Qur'an berbahasa Arab yang tidak ada kebengkokan."
(pangkal ayat 28)
Yang dituju dengan menyebutkan bahasa Arabnya itu ialah supaya jelas bagi bangsa yang mula menerimanya bahwa Al-Qur'an itu tidaklah susah dipahamkan, karena dia diturunkan dalam bahasa mereka sendiri. Dan tidak banyak kebengkokan, artinya tidak banyak berbelat-belit. Bahkan sungguh pun dia diturunkan dalam bahasa Arab, didorong oleh rasa iman dan ingin mendalami Islam maka seluruh bangsa yang telah memeluk islam di atas dunia ini pun dengan kesungguhan hati mempelajari bahasa Arab itu. Bangsa Persia (Iran), Mongol, Turki, Bukhara, bangsa Indonesia dan berpuluh lagi bangsa lain telah memeluk Islam dan telah mempelajari bahasa Arab yang tidak berbelat belit itu. Ulama-ulama Islam bukan saja terdiri dari orang Arab, bahkan belum setengah abad setelah Rasulullah wafat, yang memegang teguh dan memperkembangkan ilmu-ilmu agama Islam, sebagian besar bukanlah bangsa Arab. Seumpama Imam Bu-khari ahli hadits, Imam Abu Hanifah ahli fiqih yang besar yang bergelar al-lmam al-A'zham, keduanya bukanlah orang Arab. Atha ulama tabi'in yang masyhur di Mekah adalah orang Habsyi. Sibawaihi, ahli ilmu nahwu yang terkenal, adalah orang Persia. Demikianlah seterusnya dalam segala bangsa di permukaan bumi ini. Malahan tanah kita bumi Melayu ini pun menimbulkan beberapa ulama yang mengarang ilmu agama Islam dalam bahasa Arab, bukanlah mereka orang Arab. Seumpama Syekh Ahmad Arsyad Banjar, Syekh Nawawi Banten, Syekh Ahmad Khathib Minangkabau, Syekh Ahmad Khathib Sambas, Syekh Daud Fathani, semuanya bukanlah orang Arab. Maka ujung ayat tepat sekali, yaitu
“Supaya mereka itu bertakwa."

Jelaslah bahwa tujuan menurunkan Al-Qur'an ialah mengajak manusia agar mendekatkan hubungannya dengan Allah. Bukan semata-mata untuk enak dibaca saja, padahal isinya tidak dipahamkan. Dia bukan semata-mata bacaan, melainkan lebih dari itu, yaitu tuntunan hidup bagi keselamatan dunia dan akhirat.
“Allah membuat suatu perumpamaan."
(pangkal ayat 29)
Allah suka sekali membuat perumpamaan untuk mendekatkan persoalan ke dalam pikiran orang yang berakal. Sekarang Allah pun membuat perumpamaan pula, “Seorang laki-laki (budak) yang dimiliki oleh orang berserikat yang dalam keadaan berselisih dan seorang laki-laki lagi yang jadi milik penuh dari seseorang."Laki-laki yang dimiliki oleh orang berserikat yang dalam keadaan berselisih dan seorang laki-laki yang dipunyai menjadi milik penuh oleh seseorang itu, keduanya laki-laki yang diambil perumpamaan ialah budak. Di zaman purbakala perbudakan masih ada. Perbudakan baru habis dari dunia ini belum mencapai 150 tahun sampai sekarang. Sebab itu ingatlah kita maklumi kalau di dalam Al-Qur'an perbudakan diambil jadi perumpamaan, karena di zaman Al-Qur'an turun perbudakan masih ada. Di sini dibandingkan di antara dua orang budak; yang pertama budak kepunyaan orang berkongsi dua tiga orang. Yang kedua budak yang dimiliki oleh satu orang saja. “Adakah kedua perumpamaan itu sama?" Tentu dengan sendirinya akan timbul penjawaban dari orang yang berpikir dan berakal bahwa di antara kedua budakyang jadi perumpamaan itu tidaklah sama kedudukannya. Budak pertama karena ia kepunyaan satu perkongsian maka perkhidmatannya kepada yang dipertuannya pasti terpecah. Kalau kedua atau ketiga yang dipertuan sekali memanggil niscaya dia ragu mana yang akan didahu lukan. Didahulukan tuan A niscaya tuan B marah dan tuan C mengomel. Tetapi kalau si budak, si hamba sahaya kepunyaan satu tuan, perkhidmatannya pun tidak akan terpecah dan tidak akan ragu-ragu. Bila panggilan datang akan segera disahutinya dan dilaksanakannya apa yang diperintahkan.
Maka perumpamaan seorang budak kepunyaan orang berkongsi yang selalu berselisih karenamasing-masinghendaklebih menguasai itu ialah orang yang mempersekutukan Allah dengan yang lain, dengan berhala, dengan thagut dan sebagainya. Dan perumpamaan budak dengan yang dimiliki oleh seorang tuan itu ialah orang yang bertauhid. Kalau ini ditanyakan dan disuruh pikirkan, niscaya mereka akan menjawab bahwa budak yang tuannya hanya satu orang itulah yang tidak tergoncang jiwanya. Adapun yang banyak tuan akan selalu bimbang; mana yang akan didahulukan. “Segala puji bagi Allah!" Karena ingatlah penjawaban mereka, karena mereka memakai akalnya.
“Namun kebanyakan mereka tidaklah mengetahui."

(Allah telah menurunkan perkataan yang paling baik yaitu Kitab) Al-Qur'an; lafal Kitaaban menjadi Badal lafal Ahsanal Hadiitsi (yang serupa) satu sama lainnya sama dalam hal Nuzhum dan hal-hal lainnya (lagi berulang-ulang) diulang-ulang di dalamnya janji dan ancaman serta hal-hal lainnya (gemetarlah karenanya) yakni gemetar karena takut di kala disebutkan ancaman-Nya (kulit orang-orang yang takut) yang merasa takut (kepada Rabbnya, kemudian menjadi tenang kulit dan kalbu mereka di waktu mengingat Allah) sewaktu ingat akan janji-Nya. (Itulah) kitab Al-Qur'an itu (petunjuk Allah, dengan Kitab itu Dia menunjuki siapa yang dikehendaki-Nya. Dan barang siapa yang disesatkan Allah, niscaya tak ada baginya seorang pemberi petunjuk.).
