سَبَأ ٤٦
- قُلۡ Say
- إِنَّمَآ Only
- أَعِظُكُم I advise you
- بِوَٰحِدَةٍۖ for one (thing)

Say, "I only advise you of one [thing] - that you stand for Allāh, [seeking truth] in pairs and individually, and then give thought." There is not in your companion any madness. He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment.
Say: 'I will give you just one [piece of] admonition: namely, that you rise up for God, in other words, for His sake, in twos and individually, and then reflect: and realise [that], there is no madness in your companion, Muhammad may peace and salutation be upon him. He is just a warner to you before [the befalling of] a severe chastisement', in the Hereafter, if you disobey him.
Refutation of Their Accusation that the Prophet was Insane
Allah says:
قُلْ
Say:
Allah says:`Say, O Muhammad, to these disbelievers who claim that you are crazy,'
إِنَّمَا أَعِظُكُم بِوَاحِدَةٍ
I exhort you to one (thing) only,
meaning, I am only telling you to one thing, and that is:
أَن تَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ مَثْنَى وَفُرَادَى ثُمَّ تَتَفَكَّرُوا مَا بِصَاحِبِكُم مِّن جِنَّةٍ
that you stand up for Allah's sake in pairs and singly, and reflect, there is no madness in your companion.
meaning, `stand sincerely before Allah, without being influenced by your own desires or tribal feelings, and ask one another, is Muhammad crazy Advise one another,'
ثُمَّ تَتَفَكَّرُوا
and reflect means,
let each person look within himself concerning the matter of Muhammad, and ask other people about him if he is still confused, then let him think about the matter.
Allah says:
أَن تَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ مَثْنَى وَفُرَادَى ثُمَّ تَتَفَكَّرُوا مَا بِصَاحِبِكُم مِّن جِنَّةٍ
(that you stand up for Allah's sake in pairs and singly, and reflect, there is no madness in your companion).
This meaning was stated by Mujahid, Muhammad bin Ka`b, As-Suddi, Qatadah and others.
This is what is meant by the Ayah.
إِنْ هُوَ إِلاَّ نَذِيرٌ لَّكُم بَيْنَ يَدَيْ عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ
He is only a warner to you in face of a severe torment.
Al-Bukhari recorded that Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, commented on this Ayah:
One day, the Prophet climbed up As-Safa' and shouted,
يَا صَبَاحَاه
O people!
The Quraysh gathered around him, and said, `What is the matter with you?'
He said,
أَرَأَيْتُمْ لَوْ أَخْبَرْتُكُمْ أَنَّ الْعَدُوَّ يُصَبِّحُكُمْ أَوْ يُمَسِّيكُمْ أَمَا كُنْتُمْ تُصَدِّقُونِّي
What do you think If I told you that the enemy were approaching and will reach us in the morning or in the evening, would you believe me?
They said, `Of course.'
He said:
فَإِنِّي نَذِيرٌ لَكُمْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ عَذَابٍ شَدِيد
I am a warner to you in the face of a severe punishment.
Abu Lahab said, `May you perish! You have called us together only to tell us this.'
Then Allah revealed:
تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِى لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ
Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab and perish he! (111:1)
We have already discussed this in our Tafsir of the Ayah:
وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الاٌّقْرَبِينَ
And warn your tribe of near kindred. (26:214)
I do not ask for any Reward for conveying the Message
Allah commands His Messenger to:
قُلْ
Say,
Allah commands His Messenger to say to the idolators:
مَا سَأَلْتُكُم مِّنْ أَجْرٍ فَهُوَ لَكُمْ
Whatever wage I might have asked of you is yours.
meaning, `I do not want anything for conveying the Message of Allah to you, advising you and telling you to worship Allah.'
إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلاَّ عَلَى اللَّهِ
My wage is from Allah only,
means, rather I will seek the reward for that with Allah.
وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدٌ
and He is a Witness over all things.
means, He knows all things, and He knows everything about me and the manner in which I am conveying the Message to you, and He knows all about you.
قُلْ إِنَّ رَبِّي يَقْذِفُ بِالْحَقِّ عَلَّمُ الْغُيُوبِ
Say:Verily, my Lord sends down the truth, the All-Knower of the Unseen.
This is like the Ayah:
يُلْقِى الرُّوحَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ عَلَى مَن يَشَأءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ
He sends the Revelation by His command to any of His servants He wills. (40:15)
meaning, He sends the angel to whomsoever He wills of His servants among the people on earth, and He is the All-Knower of the Unseen; nothing whatsoever is hidden from Him in the heavens or on earth.
قُلْ جَاء الْحَقُّ وَمَا يُبْدِيُ الْبَاطِلُ وَمَا يُعِيدُ
Say:The truth has come, and the falsehood can neither create anything nor resurrect.
means, truth and the great Law have come from Allah, and falsehood has gone and has perished and vanished.
This is like the Ayah:
بَلْ نَقْذِفُ بِالْحَقِّ عَلَى الْبَـطِلِ فَيَدْمَغُهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ زَاهِقٌ
Nay, We fling the truth against the falsehood, so it destroys it, and behold, it is vanished. (21:18)
When the Messenger of Allah entered Al-Masjid Al-Haram on the day of the conquest of Makkah, and found those idols standing around the Ka`bah, he started to hit the idols with his bow, reciting,
وَقُلْ جَأءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَـطِلُ إِنَّ الْبَـطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقًا
And say:The truth has come and the falsehood has vanished. Surely, the falsehood is ever bound to vanish. (17:81)
and:
قُلْ جَأءَ الْحَقُّ وَمَا يُبْدِىءُ الْبَـطِلُ وَمَا يُعِيدُ
Say:The truth has come, and the falsehood can neither create anything nor resurrect.
This was recorded by Al-Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i
قُلْ إِن ضَلَلْتُ فَإِنَّمَا أَضِلُّ عَلَى نَفْسِي وَإِنِ اهْتَدَيْتُ فَبِمَا يُوحِي إِلَيَّ رَبِّي
Say:If (even) I go astray, I shall stray only to my own loss. But if I remain guided, it is because of the Revelation of my Lord to me...
means, all good comes from Allah, and in what Allah sends down of revelation and clear truth there is guidance and wisdom. So whoever goes astray, does so by himself, as Abdullah bin Mas`ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said when he was asked about some issue. He said,
I will say what I think, and if it is correct, then it is from Allah, and if it is wrong, then it is from me and from the Shaytan, and Allah and His Messenger have nothing to do with it.
إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ قَرِيبٌ
Truly, He is All-Hearer, Ever Near.
means, He hears all the words of His servants, and He is always near to respond to them when they call on Him.
An-Nasa'i recorded the Hadith of Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari, which also appears in the Two Sahihs:
إِنَّكُمْ لَاتَدْعُونَ أَصَمَّ وَلَا غَايِبًا إِنَّمَا تَدْعُونَ سَمِيعًا قَرِيبًا مُجِيبًا
You are not calling upon one who is deaf or absent; you are calling upon One Who is All-Hearer, Ever Near and Responsive.
Allah says;
وَلَوْ تَرَى إِذْ فَزِعُوا فَلَ فَوْتَ
And if you could but see, when they will be terrified with no escape,
Here Allah says:`if only you could see, O Muhammad, when these deniers are terrified on the Day of Resurrection, and they have no way of escape and nowhere to run to and no refuge.'
وَأُخِذُوا مِن مَّكَانٍ قَرِيبٍ
and they will be seized from a near place.
means, they will not even be given the slightest chance of escape, but they will be seized from the first instant.
Al-Hasan Al-Basri said:
When they come forth from their graves.
وَقَالُوا امَنَّا بِهِ
And they will say:We do believe (now);
means, on the Day of Resurrection, they will say, `we believe in Allah and His angels, Books and Messengers.'
This is like the Ayah:
وَلَوْ تَرَى إِذِ الْمُجْرِمُونَ نَاكِسُواْ رُءُوسِهِمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ رَبَّنَأ أَبْصَرْنَا وَسَمِعْنَا فَارْجِعْنَا نَعْمَلْ صَـلِحاً إِنَّا مُوقِنُونَ
And if you only could see when the criminals shall hang their heads before their Lord (saying):Our Lord! We have now seen and heard, so send us back that we will do righteous good deeds. Verily, we now believe with certainty. (32:12)
Allah says:
وَأَنَّى لَهُمُ التَّنَاوُشُ مِن مَكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ
but how could they receive from a place so far off!
meaning, how could they attain faith now that they are so far removed from the place where it could be accepted from them, and they have entered the realm of the Hereafter which is the realm of reward and punishment, not the realm of trial and testing. If they had believed in this world, that would have been good for them, but now they have entered the Hereafter, there is no way that their faith can be accepted, just as there is no way a person can get a thing if he is far away from it.
Mujahid said:
وَأَنَّى لَهُمُ التَّنَاوُشُ
but how could they At-Tana'wush means,
How could they attain that?
Az-Zuhri said,
They will wish to attain faith when they have reached the Hereafter and are cut off from this world.
Al-Hasan Al-Basri said,
They will seek something when they have no way of attaining it, they will seek faith from a distant place
وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا بِهِ مِن قَبْلُ
Indeed they did disbelieve before,
means, how can they attain faith in the Hereafter when in this world they disbelieved in the truth and denied the Messengers?
وَيَقْذِفُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ
and they (used to) conjecture about the Unseen from a far place.
Malik narrated from Zayd bin Aslam that he said:
وَيَقْذِفُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ
(and they (used to) conjecture about the Unseen),
means, By guessing. as Allah says,
رَجْماً بِالْغَيْبِ
guessing at the Unseen. (18:22)
Sometimes they said he was a poet, sometimes they said he was a soothsayer, or a sorcerer, or a mad man, or other baseless comments. They denied the idea of resurrection and said:
إِن نَّظُنُّ إِلاَّ ظَنّاً وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُسْتَيْقِنِينَ
we do not think it but as a conjecture, and we have no firm convincing belief. (45:32)
Qatadah and Mujahid said,
Their belief that there would be no resurrection, no Paradise and no Hell was based on mere conjecture.
وَحِيلَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ مَا يَشْتَهُونَ
And a barrier will be set between them and that which they desire,
Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Ad-Dahhak and others said,
This means faith.
As-Suddi said:
It means Repentance.
This was also the view of Ibn Jarir, may Allah have mercy on him.
Mujahid said:
وَحِيلَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ مَا يَشْتَهُونَ
(And a barrier will be set between them and that which they desire) means,
This world and its wealth, luxuries and people.
Something similar was narrated from Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas and Ar-Rabi` bin Anas, may Allah be pleased with him.
It is also the opinion of Al-Bukhari and the Group.
The correct view is that there is no contradiction between the two views, for a barrier will be set between them and what they desire in this world, and what they seek in the Hereafter will be denied from them.
كَمَا فُعِلَ بِأَشْيَاعِهِم مِّن قَبْلُ
as was done in the past with the people of their kind.
means, as happened to the nations of the past who disbelieved in the Messengers; when the punishment of Allah came upon them, they wished that they had believed, but this was not accepted from them.
فَلَمَّا رَأَوْاْ بَأْسَنَا قَالُواْ ءَامَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ وَكَـفَرْنَا بِمَا كُنَّا بِهِ مُشْرِكِينَ
فَلَمْ يَكُ يَنفَعُهُمْ إِيمَـنُهُمْ لَمَّا رَأَوْاْ بَأْسَنَا سُنَّةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِى قَدْ خَلَتْ فِى عِبَادِهِ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ الْكَـفِرُونَ
So, when they ﷺ Our punishment, they said:We believe in Allah Alone and reject (all) that we used to associate with Him as (His) partners.
Then their faith could not avail them when they ﷺ Our punishment. (Like) this has been the way of Allah in dealing with His servants. And there the disbelievers lost utterly. (40:84-85)
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا فِي شَكٍّ مُّرِيبٍ
Verily, they have been in grave doubt.
means, in this world they had doubts, so their faith will not be accepted from them when they behold the punishment with their own eyes.
Qatadah said,
Beware of doubt. For whoever dies doubting, will be raised doubting and whoever dies believing, with certainty will be raised believing with certainty.
This is the end of the Tafsir of Surah Saba'. Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, is the Guide to the right way.

Call to the disbelievers of Makkah
In verse 46: إِنَّمَا أَعِظُكُم بِوَاحِدَةٍ (I advise you for one thing only), in order to negate any excuse for the people of Makkah, they have been shown a shortcut to ascertain truth. For this, they had to do just one thing: Stand for Allah, in pairs and singles. 'Standing for Allah' does not mean standing in the physical sense, something like standing up from the posture of sitting or lying. Instead of that, it means having the resolve to show full care and concern for the assignment in sight. Then, by adding: لِلہ (lil-lah: For Allah) with the word: قِیَام (qiyam: To stand), the purpose is to make it clear that one should start looking for' truth with a mind cleansed of previous thoughts and beliefs for the good pleasure of Allah alone, so that previous thoughts and deeds do not obstruct one's way to an acceptance of the truth. And then, the expression 'in pairs and singles' is not intended to point out a particular number. The sense is that there are two ways of pondering over something: (1) To think it out alone and in private. (2) To consult friends and elders, discuss it with them and then arrive at some conclusion. It is being said here that, 'out of these two methods, you can go by the one you like.'
The conjunction: ثُمَّ (thumma: then) in the next sentence in verse 46: ثُمَّ تَتَفَكَّرُوا (thumma tatafakkaru: then ponder) refers back to: أَن تَقُومُوا (an taqumu: That you stand) appearing earlier in the same verse where the purpose of standing has been spelt out - that is, 'cleanse your mind of all previous thoughts, get ready to act for the good pleasure of Allah, think about the call of the prophet of Islam, Sayyidna Muhammad al-Mustafa ﷺ and decide for yourself whether or not it is true and it does not matter whether you do this thinking on your own and all alone, or you do it by consulting others and arriving at some conclusion following discussions with them.'
Onwards from here, another line of thinking has been suggested: Here is a solitary person, all by himself, with no power or group to back him and no wealth or property to strengthen him. Here he comes proclaiming an article of faith counter to that of his own people rather that of the whole world, something having taken firm roots over centuries and something they all agree to. Such a proclamation can come only in two forms: (1) Either the person making the proclamation is totally insane who has no idea of his gain or loss and is ready to invite the wrath of his people and all sorts of hardship for him. (2) Or, what he is saying might as well be true - that he is a rasul or messenger from Allah and fears none in conveying and implementing His command.
Now, think hard with an open mind as to which of the two things is the real thing. If you think in that manner, you would be left with no choice but to become certain that he cannot be insane. The entire city of Makkah and everyone in the large tribe of Quraish is aware of his wisdom and character. He has spent forty years of his life among his people. From childhood to his youth, everything about him has been before them. No one has ever found any word or deed issuing forth from him to be counter to reason, wisdom, sobriety and gentleness. And other than the kalimah of: لا إلہ إلا اللہ la ilaha il-lal-lah (there is no god but Allah) to which he invites people, no one can doubt any of his word and deed to be counter to reason and wisdom, even today. Given these conditions, it becomes quite obvious that he cannot be insane. This was established in the next sentence of the verse by saying: مَا بِصَاحِبِكُم مِّن جِنَّةٍ (there is no madness in your fellow (the Holy Prophet ﷺ). Here, the word: صَاحِبِكُم (sahibikum: your fellow) releases a hint in this direction. It is suggesting that should it be the case of a visitor coming in from outside whose antecedents are unknown and who is heard saying something counter to the belief of a whole people, then, it is possible to call him insane. But, this cannot be true in his case. He is one of you, he lives in your city, he belongs to your brotherhood and abides in your company be it day or night. Nothing he does is hidden from you. In fact, even you yourselves have never cast aspersions against him in that manner before this.
And when the absence of the first situation becomes clear, the second situation stands established that has been mentioned in the last sentence of this very verse (46) as: إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ لَّكُم بَيْنَ يَدَيْ عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ (He is none but a warner to you in the face of a stern torment). It means that his presence among them signifies nothing but that he has been sent there to save people from the severe punishment of the Day of Judgment by warning them of it in advance.

Tafsir Surat Al-Saba': 46
Katakanlah, "Sesungguhnya aku hendak memperingatkan kepadamu suatu hal saja, yaitu supaya kamu menghadap Allah (dengan ikhlas) berdua-dua atau sendiri-sendiri; kemudian kamu pikirkan (tentang Muhammad) tidak ada penyakit gila sedikit pun pada kawanmu itu. Dia tidak lain hanyalah pemberi peringatan bagi kamu sebelum (menghadapi) azab yang keras.
Firman Allah ﷻ: “Katakanlah.” (Saba: 46) Hai Muhammad, kepada orang-orang kafir itu yang mengiramu sebagai orang gila,
“Sesungguhnya aku hendak memperingatkan kepadamu suatu hal saja.” (Saba: 46)
Sesungguhnya aku hanya memperingatkan kalian tentang satu hal saja, yaitu: “Supaya kamu menghadap Allah (dengan ikhlas) berdua-dua atau sendiri-sendiri; kemudian kamu pikirkan (tentang Muhammad) tidak ada penyakit gila sedikit pun pada kawanmu itu.” (Saba: 46) Hendaknya kamu bersatu dan membulatkan niat secara tulus karena Allah tanpa dipengaruhi oleh kecenderungan dan juga tanpa fanatisme. Lalu sebagian kamu menanyakan kepada sebagian yang lain, "Apakah Muhammad mempunyai penyakit gila?" Kemudian sebagian kamu menjawab sebagian lain dengan tulus.
“Kemudian kamu pikirkan (tentang Muhammad).” (Saba: 46)
Maksudnya, hendaklah seseorang merenungkan perihal Nabi Muhammad dan menanyakannya kepada orang lain tentang perihalnya jika ia sulit untuk menilainya. Hendaknya pula ia memandang kepada dirinya sendiri. Karena itu, disebutkan oleh firman Allah ﷻ: “Yaitu supaya kamu menghadap Allah (dengan ikhlas) berdua-dua atau sendiri-sendiri; kemudian kamu pikirkan (tentang Muhammad) tidak ada penyakit gila sedikit pun pada kawanmu itu.” (Saba: 46)
Demikianlah menurut apa yang tersimpulkan dari pendapat yang dikemukakan oleh Mujahid, Muhammad ibnu Ka'b, As-Saddi, Qatadah, dan lain-lainnya. Dan inilah yang dimaksud oleh ayat.
Adapun mengenai apa yang diriwayatkan oleh Ibnu Abu Hatim sehubungan dengan tafsir ayat ini, yaitu: Telah menceritakan kepada kami ayahku, telah menceritakan kepada kami Hisyam ibnu Ammar, telah menceritakan kepada kami Sadaqah ibnu Khalid, telah menceritakan kepada kami Usman ibnu Abul Atikah, dari Ali ibnu Yazid, dari Al-Qasim, dari Abu Umamah r.a. yang mengatakan bahwa sesungguhnya Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: “Aku dianugerahi tiga perkara yang belum pernah diberikan kepada seorang pun sebelumku, bukan karena sombong. Yaitu dihalalkan bagiku ganimah, padahal ia belum pernah dihalalkan bagi orang-orang sebelumku; mereka dahulu sebelumku mengumpulkan ganimah itu, lalu mereka bakar; dan aku diutus untuk semua makhluk yang berkulit merah dan yang berkulit hitam (yakni jin dan manusia), sedangkan dahulu setiap nabi diutus hanya khusus untuk kaumnya; dan bumi ini dijadikan bagiku masjid lagi suci dan menyucikan, aku dapat bertayamum memakai debu dan salat di mana saja bila waktu salat telah masuk. Allah ﷻ telah berfirman, "Supaya kalian berdiri menghadap Allah berdua-dua atau sendiri-sendiri’” dan aku diberi pertolongan melalui rasa gentar (yang mencekam musuhku) dalam jarak perjalanan satu bulan di hadapanku.”
Hadis ini daif sanadnya, dan mengenai tafsir ayat yang ditakwilkan dengan pengertian berdiri dalam shalat baik jamaah maupun sendiri-sendiri jauh dari kebenaran. Barangkali kalimat ini disisipkan oleh sebagian perawi ke dalam hadis, karena sesungguhnya asal hadis ini telah termaktub di dalam kitab-kitab sahih dan lainnya (tanpa memakai tafsir ayat tersebut); hanya Allah-lah Yang Maha Mengetahui.
Firman Allah ﷻ: “Dan tidak lain dia hanyalah pemberi peringatan bagi kamu sebelum (menghadapi) azab yang keras.” (Saba: 46)
Imam Bukhari sehubungan dengan tafsir ayat ini mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ali ibnu Abdullah, telah menceritakan kepada kami Muhammad ibnu Hazim, telah menceritakan kepada kami Al-A'masy, dari Amr ibnu Murrah, dari Sa'id ibnu Jubair, dari Ibnu Abbas r.a. yang mengatakan bahwa pada suatu hari Nabi ﷺ mendaki bukit Safa, lalu berseru, "Hai orang-orang yang ada di pagi hari ini, berkumpullah!" Maka orang-orang Quraisy datang berkumpul kepadanya, lalu mereka bertanya, "Ada apa dengan kamu?" Nabi ﷺ bersabda: “Bagaimanakah pendapat kalian seandainya aku beritakan kepada kalian bahwa musuh akan datang menyerang kalian di pagi hari atau di petang hari ini, apakah kalian percaya kepadaku?” Mereka menjawab, "Tentu percaya.” Nabi ﷺ bersabda, "Maka sesungguhnya aku memberi peringatan kepada kalian sebelum (menghadapi) azab yang keras.” Maka Abu Lahab berkata, "Celakalah kamu, apakah hanya untuk itu engkau mengumpulkan kami?" Lalu Allah ﷻ menurunkan firman-Nya: “Binasalah kedua tangan Abu Lahab dan sesungguhnya dia akan binasa.” (Al-Lahab: 1) Hal ini telah dijelaskan dalam tafsir firman-Nya: “Dan berilah peringatan kepada kerabat-kerabatmu yang terdekat.” (Asy-Syu'ara: 214)
Imam Ahmad mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Abu Na'im, telah menceritakan kepada kami Basyir ibnul Muhajir, telah menceritakan kepadaku Abdullah ibnu Buraidah, dari ayahnya r.a. yang mengatakan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ keluar menemui kami di suatu hari, lalu beliau berseru sebanyak tiga kali dan bersabda, "Tahukah kalian, seperti apakah perumpamaan antara aku dan kalian?" Mereka menjawab, "Allah dan Rasul-Nya lebih mengetahui." Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: “Sesungguhnya perumpamaan aku dan kalian bagaikan suatu kaum yang merasa khawatir akan kedatangan musuh yang menyerang mereka. Lalu mereka mengirim seorang lelaki untuk memata-matai kedatangan musuh. Ketika ia telah berada di posisinya, tiba-tiba ia melihat musuh datang. Maka segera ia kembali untuk memperingatkan mereka dengan penuh kekhawatiran akan tersusul oleh musuh sebelum ia menyampaikan peringatan dini kepada kaumnya, untuk itu ia melepaskan bajunya dan mengibar-ngibarkannya seraya berseru, ‘Hai kaumku, kalian akan diserang. Hai kaumku, kalian akan diserang, sebanyak tiga kali’.”
Masih dalam sanad yang sama disebutkan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: "Aku diutus, sedangkan jarak antara aku dengan hari kiamat berbarengan, hampir saja hari kiamat benar-benar mendahuluiku.” Hadis diriwayatkan secara tunggal oleh Imam Ahmad di dalam kitab musnadnya.
Katakanlah, wahai Nabi Muhammad, 'Aku hendak memperingatkan kepadamu satu hal saja, yaitu agar kamu menghadap Allah dengan ikhlas guna menemukan kebenaran. Kamu lakukan renungan itu dengan berdua-dua, yakni secara berkelompok, atau sendiri-sendiri, dalam suasana tenang, kemudian agar kamu pikirkan tentang Nabi Muhammad yang sudah lama kamu kenal sebagai orang yang dapat dipercaya, lalu kamu mengatakan dia gila, lantaran dia mengajakmu untuk beriman kepada Allah. Ketahuilah, kawanmu itu tidak gila sedikit pun. Dia tidak lain hanyalah seorang pemberi peringatan bagi kamu sebelum menghadapi azab yang keras. '47. Katakanlah, wahai Nabi Muhammad, 'Imbalan apa pun yang aku minta kepadamu, maka manfaat imbalan itu untuk kamu. Apabila kamu menerima seruanku agar beriman dan mengesakan Allah maka manfaat iman itu adalah untuk dirimu sendiri, bukan untukku. Imbalanku hanyalah dari Allah, dan Dia Maha Mengetahui segala sesuatu, baik yang tersembunyi maupun yang tampak. '.
Pada ayat ini, Allah meminta Nabi Muhammad agar mengajak kaum kafir untuk melakukan satu hal saja, yaitu benar-benar berupaya mendekatkan diri kepada Allah untuk mencari kebenaran. Mendekatkan diri untuk mencari kebenaran dapat dilakukan sendiri-sendiri atau bersama dengan orang lain supaya dapat bertukar pikiran. Setelah itu, mereka diminta untuk merenungkan kebenaran ajaran-ajaran dalam Al-Qur'an, secara tenang, objektif, dan tulus tanpa dipengaruhi hawa nafsu atau kedengkian. Setelah mereka renungkan secara objektif, masih jugakah mereka akan menuduh bahwa yang menyampaikan kebenaran itu, yaitu Nabi Muhammad, tidak benar? Bukankah ajaran Al-Qur'an itu amat benar? Bila benar, pembawa ajaran itu juga benar. Seharusnya mereka sampai kepada kesimpulan bahwa beliau sejatinya adalah seorang yang tulus. Ia hanya ingin mengingatkan dan memperingatkan manusia agar tidak sesat di dunia dan merugi nanti di akhirat. Beliau hanya ingin agar manusia beriman dan menjadi manusia yang baik, agar di dunia bahagia dan di akhirat terhindar dari neraka. Oleh karena itu, mereka seharusnya berterima kasih kepadanya, dan tidak menuduhnya yang bukan-bukan.
Fungsi beliau sebagai pemberi peringatan ini juga disampaikan beliau dalam sebuah hadis:
Sesungguhnya aku ini pemberi peringatan bagimu sekalian sebelum menghadapi azab yang keras. (Riwayat al-Bukhari dari Ibnu 'Abbas).
LANDASAN DAKWAH ISLAMIYAH
Dalam lima ayat ini, ayat 46 sampai 50 dimulai Allah ﷻ dengan ucapan, “Katakanlah! “ Yaitu sebagai bimbingan kepada Utusan-Nya dalam menghadapi manusia, terutama kaumnya sebagai landasan pertama dan dakwah Islam ini.
“Katakanlah! Hanya satu saja nasihat yang akan aku berikan kepadamu."
(pangkal ayat 46)
Sebagai inti atau puncak dari segala se-ruan dan dakwah, “(yaitu) bahwa kamu menghadap Allah berdua-dua dan sendiri-sendiri." Dalam ayat ini terkandung anjuran kepada pribadi mereka masing-masing seketika mereka tersisih dari kelompok orang banyak.
Di hadapan orang banyak pemimpin-pemimpin Quraisy telah menyebarkan propa-ganda bahwa Al-Qur'an yang dibawa oleh Muhammad ﷺ itu adalah usahanya hendak merintangi mereka dari menyembah apa yang disembah nenek moyang, kemudian dituduh pula bahwa Al-Qur'an itu hanya dusta yang dikarang-karang saja oleh Muhammad, dan ketiga dituduh bahwa anjuran Muhammad itu hanyalah sihir yang nyata.
Di sini Nabi disuruh Allah menganjurkan orang-orang itu supaya berpikir sendiri-sendiri, direnungkan dan tinjau ke dalam hati sendiri. Sebab seluruh kaum itu tetap percaya kepada Allah Yang Esa. Mereka menyembah berhala hanyalah sebagai perantara saja. Dalam anjuran Nabi ini mereka disuruh berdua-dua atau sendiri-sendiri menghadap langsung kepada Allah. Tinggalkan pengaruh yang lain.
Dalam ayat disuruh terlebih dahulu memusatkan persembahan semata-mata kepada Allah itu ialah berdua-dua. Artinya ajaklah seorang teman yang dekat mengadakan per-tukaran pikiran dan persamaan paham. Dengan cara demikianlah akan sama terbebaslah diri dan teman dari pengaruh orang banyak yang sedang dihasut dengan propaganda yang bukan-bukan, sampai menuduh Nabi Muhammad ﷺ itu gila."Kemudian itu hendaklah kamu pikirkan/'yaitu setelah menghadap seluruh ingatan kepada Allah Yang Maha Tunggal Pencipta Alam hendaklah berpikir lagi. Pikirkan segala butir kata dan seruan, ajakan, dan dakwah yang disampaikan oleh Muhammad kepada kamu, sejak ayat-ayat pertama mulai turun sampai sekarang. Niscaya pikiranmu yang jernih dan tidak terpengaruh itu akan dapat mengambil kesimpulan, “Tidaklah ada pada teman kamu itu sakit gila." Tidaklah mungkin butir kata yang begitu mendalam akan timbul dari pikiran orang gila.
“Dianya lain tidak hanyalah menjadi Pengancam bagi kamu di hadapan adzab
yang sangat."

Tidak! Kawanmu itu bukan orang gila. Dia adalah laksana seorang yang keluar tengah malam dari dalam rumahnya karena merasa sangat panas. Lalu dibukanya jendela dan melihat keluar. Tiba-tiba kelihatan olehnya api menyala-nyala meninggi pada dapur rumah tetanggannya, namun tetangga itu masih nyenyak tidur. Lalu dia bersorak-sorak, “Api! Api!" agar orang di kiri kanan, terutama yang sedang terancam bahaya supaya segera bangun me-madamkan api itu.
“Katakanlah, upah yang aku minta dari kamu maka dia adalah untuk kamu jua."
(pangkal ayat 47)
Ayat ini bukanlah berarti bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ meminta upah dari mereka dalam beliau melakukan dakwah. Ibarat kata ini ialah bantahan dan tangkisan kepada mereka yang menilai dakwah Rasul akan meminta “persen" atau balas jasa. Kepada orang seperti ini Nabi disuruh mengatakan kata sebagaimana itu, yang berarti, “Simpanlah yang kamu sangka akan aku minta itu buat keperluanmu sendiri." Upahku sendiri lain tidak adalah terserah kepada Allah." Yang mengutus aku menjadi rasul adalah Allah sendiri. Sebab itu maka hidupku dan matiku, jaminan hidupku dan keselamatanku adalah dari Allah semata-mata. Jangan kamu menyangka aku mengharapkan apa-apa dari kalian. Harapanku hanya kalian berbahagia, selamat dunia dan akhirat.
“Dan Dia atas segala sesuatu adalah menyaksikan."
(ujung ayat 47)
Perjuanganku menegakkan dakwah kepada kamu, sanggahan kamu terhadap seruan-ku, ataupun penerimaan kamu dengan baik, semuanya di bawah kesaksian Allah sematamata.
“Katakanlah, “Sesungguhnya Tuhankulah yang melempankan dengan kebenanan."
(pangkal ayat 48)
Dan lemparan Allah ﷻ itu adalah jitu selalu, apatah yang Allah lemparkan itu kebenaran pula. Maksud pelemparan di sini ialah untuk menghancurkan pertahanan dari perkara yang batil, pendirian yang salah. Dia dilempar oleh Allah ﷻ dengan kebenaran, sehingga pertahanan yang batil itu runtuh tidak dapat bangun lagi. Di ujung ayat disebut sifat Allah ﷻ, yaitu “'Allamul Ghuyuub “. Allah Yang Maha Mengetahui akan segala yang gaib, sehingga kemungkaran dan kebatilan itu tidak dapat dilindung-lindungi dan disembunyikan.
“Katakanlah, “Yang benar sudah datang “

Diumpamakan orang sedang ribut-ribut, kacau-balau pada sebuah negeri karena pemimpin sejati tidak ada, hanya pengadu-pengadu untung yang berebut-rebut hendak jadi pemimpin, maka tiba-tiba datanglah berita bahwa Sang Kebenaran telah datang. Meskipun dia belum muncul, masih di tengah perjalanan, maka si batil dan si pengacau pengadu untung itu dengan sendirinya kehilangan tenaga buat melawan. Mereka hilang satu demi satu, dan tidak kelihatan mata hidungnya lagi, “Dan tidaklah yang batil akan bermulai, “ tidaklah akan berhasil kalau masih ada percobaan hendak menyusun kebatilan yang baru, buat menandingi atau mengalahkan kebenaran yang telah datang itu.
“Dan tidaklah dia akan kembali."

Bilamana Islam sebagai kebenaran yang mutlak telah datang, maka daulah kebatilan berhala dengan sendirinya telah hancur dan pasti kalah. Akan menegakkan keberhalaan yang baru sebagai ganti yang lama, tidaklah akan berhasil. Demikian pun buat mengulangi kembali keberhalaan yang runtuh sampai sebagaimana dahulu tidaklah akan tercapai lagi.
“Katakanlah, “Jika aku tersesat, maka tidak lain kesesatanku itu hanyalah untuk diriku."
(pangkal ayat 50)
Timbul bimbingan Allah ﷻ memberikan tangkisan seperti ini kepada Rasul-Nya ialah karena pasti ada pula di antara musyrikin itu yang mengatakan bahwa Nabi telah tersesat jalan, karena dia telah meninggalkan agama dan tradisi yang telah diterima dari nenek moyang. Dia telah menantang kebiasaan orang banyak. Nabi disuruh menjawab, bahwa kalau langkahku itu kamu namai tersesat, yang demikian adalah tanggung jawabku. “Dan jika aku mendapat petunjuk," sehingga jalan yang aku tempuh itu berhasil dengan baik, “Maka itu adalah dengan sebab apa yang diwahyukan kepadaku oleh Tuhanku." Sama sekali ini adalah berkah dan bimbingan Allah ﷻ, pimpinan-Nya dan petunjuk yang Dia berikan. “Sesungguhnya Dia adalah Maha Mendengarmaka didengar-Nyalah segala keluhan dan permohonanku. Didengar-Nya pula jika aku terkhilaf mengucapkan kata, lalu ditegurnya,
“Mahadekat."

Sehingga jika aku memohonkan pertolongan di saat itu juga permohonanku Dia ka-bulkan. Dia dekat, Dia menjaga, memelihara, memberikan perlindungan. Dia dekat, sehingga segala bahaya yang akan menimpa kepada Rasul-Nya dan kepada segala umat yang berjuang dengan ikhlas, akan mendapat per-lindungan-Nya. Dan karena Allah itu dekat adanya, baik Rasul atau orang-orang yang mengikuti jejaknya, selalu berhati-hati dalam hidup, jangan sampai melanggar larangan-Nya dan melalaikan apa yang Dia perintahkan.
(Katakanlah! "Sesungguhnya aku hendak memperingatkan kepada kalian suatu hal saja) yaitu (supaya kalian menghadap Allah) dengan ikhlas hanya karena-Nya (dua-dua) yakni berduaan (atau sendiri-sendiri) satu persatu (kemudian kalian pikirkan tentang -Muhammad-) sehingga kalian mengetahui (tidak ada pada diri kawan kalian ini) yakni Nabi Muhammad (penyakit gila sedikit pun) yakni kegilaan (tidak lain dia hanyalah pemberi peringatan bagi kalian sebelum) kalian menghadapi (azab yang keras.") di akhirat nanti jika kalian mendurhakainya.
