آلِ عِمْرَان : ١٠٣

وَٱعۡتَصِمُواْ And hold firmly
بِحَبۡلِ to (the) rope
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah
جَمِيعٗا all together
وَلَا and (do) not
تَفَرَّقُواْۚ be divided
وَٱذۡكُرُواْ And remember
نِعۡمَتَ (the) Favor
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah
عَلَيۡكُمۡ on you
إِذۡ when
كُنتُمۡ you were
أَعۡدَآءٗ enemies
فَأَلَّفَ then He made friendship
بَيۡنَ between
قُلُوبِكُمۡ your hearts
فَأَصۡبَحۡتُم then you became
بِنِعۡمَتِهِۦٓ by His Favor
إِخۡوَٰنٗا brothers
وَكُنتُمۡ And you were
عَلَىٰ on
شَفَا (the) brink
حُفۡرَةٖ (of) pit
مِّنَ of
ٱلنَّارِ the Fire
فَأَنقَذَكُم then He saved you
مِّنۡهَاۗ from it
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus
يُبَيِّنُ makes clear
ٱللَّهُ Allah
لَكُمۡ for you
ءَايَٰتِهِۦ His Verses
لَعَلَّكُمۡ so that you may
تَهۡتَدُونَ (be) guided

And hold firmly to the rope¹ of Allāh all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allāh upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allāh make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.

And hold fast to, clutch, God's bond, namely, His religion, together, and do not scatter, after submitting [to Islam]; remember God's grace, His bestowing of favours, upon you, O companies of the Aws and the Khazraj, when you were enemies, and He brought your hearts together, through Islam, so that by His grace you became brothers, in religion and comradeship; and you were upon the brink, the edge, of a pit of fire, such that to fall into it you only had to die disbelieving; but He delivered you from it, through belief. So, just as He has made clear for you what has been mentioned, God makes clear to you His signs that you might be guided.

"Meaning of `Taqwa of Allah Allah says, يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ امَنُواْ اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ O you who believe! Have Taqwa of Allah as is His due, Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Abdullah bin Mas`ud commented on the Ayah, اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ (Have Taqwa of Allah as is His due), ""That He is obeyed and not defied, remembered and not forgotten and appreciated and not unappreciated."" This has an authentic chain of narration to Abdullah bin Mas`ud. Al-Hakim collected this Hadith in his Mustadrak, from Ibn Mas`ud, who related it to the Prophet. Al-Hakim said, ""It is authentic according to the criteria of the Two Sheikhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it."" This is what he said, but it appears that it is only a statement of Abdullah bin Mas`ud, and Allah knows best. It was also reported that Anas said, ""The servant will not have Taqwa of Allah as is His due until he keeps his tongue idle."" Allah's statement, وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلاَّ وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ and die not except as (true) Muslims. means, preserve your Islam while you are well and safe, so that you die as a Muslim. The Most Generous Allah has made it His decision that whatever state one lives in, that is what he dies upon and is resurrected upon. We seek refuge from dying on other than Islam. Imam Ahmad recorded that Mujahid said, ""The people were circling around the Sacred House when Ibn Abbas was sitting, holding a bent-handled walking stick. Ibn Abbas said, The Messenger of Allah (recited) يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ امَنُواْ اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلاَّ وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ (Have Taqwa of Allah as is His due, die not except as (true) Muslims) then he said; وَلَوْ أَنَّ قَطْرَةً مِنَ الزَّقُّومِ قُطِرَتْ لَاَمَرَّتْ عَلى أَهْلِ الاْرْضِ عِيشَتَهُمْ فَكَيْفَ بِمَنْ لَيْسَ لَهُ طَعَامٌ إِلاَّ الزَّقُّومُ Verily, if a drop of Zaqqum (a tree in Hell) falls, it will spoil life for the people of earth. What about those whose food is only from Zaqqum?"" This was recorded by At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban in his Sahih and Al-Hakim his Mustadrak. At-Tirmidhi said, ""Hasan Sahih,"" while Al-Hakim said; ""It meets the conditions of the Two Sahihs and they did not record it."" Imam Ahmad recorded that Jabir said that; three nights before the Messenger of Allah died he heard him saying; لَاا يَمُوتَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلاَّ وَهُوَ يُحْسِنُ الظَّنَّ بِاللهِ عَزَّ وَجَل None of you should die except while having sincere trust in Allah, the Exalted and Most Honorable. Muslim also recorded it. The Two Sahihs record that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said, يَقُولُ اللهُ أَنَا عِنْدَ ظَنِّ عَبْدِي بِي Allah said, ""I am as My servant thinks of Me."" The Necessity of Holding to the Path of Allah and the Community of the Believers Allah said next وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُواْ And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah, and be not divided among yourselves. It was said that, بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ (to the Rope of Allah), refers to Allah's covenant, just as Allah said in the following Ayah, ضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ أَيْنَ مَا ثُقِفُواْ إِلاَّ بِحَبْلٍ مِّنْ اللّهِ وَحَبْلٍ مِّنَ النَّاسِ (Indignity is put over them wherever they may be, except when under a covenant (of protection) from Allah, and from men); (3:112) in reference to pledges and peace treaties. Allah's statement وَلَا تَفَرَّقُواْ (and be not divided among yourselves), orders sticking to the community of the believers and forbids division. There are several Hadiths that require adhering to the Jama`ah (congregation of believers) and prohibit division. Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said, إِنَّ اللهَ يَرْضَى لَكُمْ ثَلَثًا وَيَسْخَطُ لَكُمْ ثَلَثًا يَرْضَى لَكُمْ أَنْ تَعْبُدُوهُ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْيًا وَأَنْ تَعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَاأ تَفَرَّقُوا وَأَنْ تَنَاصَحُوا مَنْ وَلاَّهُ اللهُ أَمْرَكُمْ وَيَسْخَطُ لَكُمْ ثَلَثًا قِيلَ وَقَالَ وَكَثْرَةَ السُّوَالِ وَإِضَاعَةَ الْمَال It pleases Allah for you to acquire three qualities and displeases Him that you acquire three characteristics. It pleases Him that; you worship Him Alone and not associate anything or anyone with Him in worship, that you hold on to the Rope of Allah altogether and do not divide, and that you advise whoever Allah appoints as your Leader. The three that displease Him are that; you say, `It was said,' and, `So-and-so said,' asking many unnecessary questions and wasting money. Allah said, وَاذْكُرُواْ نِعْمَةَ اللّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ كُنتُمْ أَعْدَاء فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُم بِنِعْمَتِهِ إِخْوَانًا and remember Allah's favor on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His grace, you became brethren. This was revealed about the Aws and Khazraj. During the time of Jahiliyyah, the Aws and Khazraj were at war and had great hatred, enmity and ill feelings towards each other, causing long conflicts and battles to occur between them. When Allah brought Islam, those among them who embraced it became brothers who loved each other by Allah's grace, having good ties for Allah's sake and helping each other in righteousness and piety. Allah said, هُوَ الَّذِيَ أَيَّدَكَ بِنَصْرِهِ وَبِالْمُوْمِنِينَ وَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ لَوْ أَنفَقْتَ مَا فِي الَارْضِ جَمِيعاً مَّا أَلَّفَتْ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَلَـكِنَّ اللّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ إِنَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ He it is Who has supported you with His Help and with the believers. And He has united their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allah has united them. Certainly He is All-Mighty, All-Wise.(8:62-63) وَكُنتُمْ عَلَىَ شَفَا حُفْرَةٍ مِّنَ النَّارِ فَأَنقَذَكُم مِّنْهَا كَذَلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللّهُ لَكُمْ ايَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allah makes His Ayat clear to you, that you may be guided. Before Islam, their disbelief had them standing at the edge of a pit of the Fire, but Allah saved them from it and delivered them to faith. The Messenger of Allah reminded the Ansar (from both Aws and Khazraj) of this bounty when he was dividing the war booty of Hunayn. During that time, some Ansar did not like the way the booty was divided, since they did not get what the others did, although that was what Allah directed His Prophet to do. The Messenger of Allah gave them a speech, in which he said, يَا مَعْشَرَ الاْاَنْصَارِ أَلَمْ أَجِدْكُمْ ضُلَّلاًا فَهَدَاكُمُ اللهُ بِي وَكُنْتُمْ مُتَفَرِّقِينَ فَأَلَّفَكُمُ اللهُ بِي وَعَالَةً فَأَغْنَاكُمُ اللهُ بِي O Ansar! Did I not find you misguided and Allah directed you to guidance because of me! Were you not divided beforehand and Allah united you around me! Were you not poor and Allah enriched you because of me! Whenever the Prophet asked them a question, they would answer, ""Indeed, Allah and His Messenger have granted us bounty. The Command to Establish the Invitation to Allah Allah said, وَلْتَكُن مِّنكُمْ أُمَّةٌ Let there arise out of you a group of people, يَدْعُونَ إِلَى الْخَيْرِ وَيَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Ma`ruf (all that Islam orders) and forbidding Al-Munkar (all that Islam has forbidden). that calls to righteousness, enjoins all that is good and forbids evil in the manner Allah commanded. وَأُوْلَـيِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ And it is they who are the successful. Ad-Dahhak said, ""They are a special group of the Companions and a special group of those after them, that is those who perform Jihad and the scholars."" The objective of this Ayah is that there should be a segment of this Muslim Ummah fulfilling this task, even though it is also an obligation on every member of this Ummah, each according to his ability. Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said, مَنْ رَأَى مِنْكُمْ مُنْكَرًا فَلْيُغَيِّرْهُ بِيَدِهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَبِلِسَانِهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِع فَبِقَلْبِهِ وَذلِكَ أَضْعَفُ الاِْيمَان Whoever among you witnesses an evil, let him change it with his hand. If he is unable, then let him change it with his tongue. If he is unable, then let him change it with his heart, and this is the weakest faith. In another narration, The Prophet said, وَلَيْسَ وَرَاءَ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الاِْيمَانِ حَبَّةُ خَرْدَل There is no faith beyond that, not even the weight of a mustard seed. Imam Ahmad recorded that Hudhayfah bin Al-Yaman said that the Prophet said, وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِه لَتَأْمُرُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلَتَنْهَوُنَّ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ أَوْ لَيُوشِكَنَّ اللهُ أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عِقَابًا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ ثُمَّ لتَدْعُنَّــهُ فَلَا يَسْتَجِيبَ لَكُم By He in Whose Hand is my soul! You will enjoin righteousness and forbid evil, or Allah shall send down a punishment from Him to you. Then, you will supplicate to Him, but He will not accept your supplication. At-Tirmidhi also collected this Hadith and said, ""Hasan"". There are many other Hadiths and Ayat on this subject, which will be explained later. The Prohibition of Division Allah said وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَالَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُواْ وَاخْتَلَفُواْ مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. In this Ayah, Allah forbids this Ummah from imitating the division and discord of the nations that came before them. These nations also abandoned enjoining righteousness and forbidding evil, although they had proof of its necessity. وَأُوْلَـيِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ It is they for whom there is an awful torment. Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Amir Abdullah bin Luhay said, ""We performed Hajj with Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan. When we arrived at Makkah, he stood up after praying Zuhr and said, `The Messenger of Allah said, إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابَيْنِ افْتَرَقُوا فِي دِينِهِمْ عَلى ثِنْتَيْنِ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً وَإِنَّ هذِهِ الاُْمَّةَ سَتَفْتَرِقُ عَلى ثَلَثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً يَعْنِي الاَْهْوَاءَ كُلُّهَا فِي النَّارِ إِلاَّ وَاحِدَةً وَهِيَ الْجَمَاعَةُ وَإِنَّهُ سَيَخْرُجُ فِي أُمَّتِي أَقْوَامٌ تَجَارَى بِهِمْ تِلْكَ الاْإَهْوَاءُ كَمَا يَتَجَارَى الْكَلَبُ بِصَاحِبِه لَاإ يَبْقَى مِنْهُ عِرْقٌ وَلَاإ مَفْصِلٌ إِلاَّ دَخَلَه The People of the Two Scriptures divided into seventy-two sects. This Ummah will divide into seventy-three sects, all in the Fire except one, that is, the Jama`ah. Some of my Ummah will be guided by desire, like one who is infected by rabies; no vein or joint will be saved from these desires. Muawiyah said next: By Allah, O Arabs! If you do not adhere to what came to you from your Prophet then other people are even more prone not to adhere to it."" Similar was recorded by Abu Dawud from Ahmad bin Hanbal and Muhammad bin Yahya. The Benefits of Brotherly Ties and Unity and the Consequence of Division on the Day of the Gathering Allah said next يَوْمَ تَبْيَضُّ وُجُوهٌ وَتَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهٌ On the Day when some faces will become white and some faces will become black; on the Day of Resurrection. This is when the faces of followers of the Sunnah and the Jama`ah will radiate with whiteness, and the faces of followers of Bid`ah (innovation) and division will be darkened, as has been reported from Ibn Abbas. Allah said, فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ اسْوَدَّتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ أَكْفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ As for those whose faces will become black (to them will be said):""Did you reject faith after accepting it!"" Al-Hasan Al-Basri said, ""They are the hypocrites."" فَذُوقُواْ الْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ Then taste the torment (in Hell) for rejecting faith. and this description befits every disbeliever. وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ ابْيَضَّتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ فَفِي رَحْمَةِ اللّهِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ And for those whose faces will become white, they will be in Allah's mercy (Paradise), therein they shall dwell forever. in Paradise, where they will reside for eternity and shall never desire to be removed. Abu Isa At-Tirmidhi recorded that Abu Ghalib said, ""Abu Umamah ﷺ heads (of the Khawarij sect) hanging on the streets of Damascus. He commented, `The Dogs of the Fire and the worst dead people under the cover of the sky. The best dead men are those whom these have killed.' He then recited, يَوْمَ تَبْيَضُّ وُجُوهٌ وَتَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهٌ (On the Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) when some faces will become white and some faces will become black), until the end of the Ayah. I said to Abu Umamah, `Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah?' He said, `If I only heard it from the Messenger of Allah once, twice, thrice, four times, or seven times, I would not have narrated it to you.""' At-Tirmidhi said, ""This Hadith is Hasan."" Ibn Majah and Ahmad recorded similarly. Allah said تِلْكَ ايَاتُ اللّهِ نَتْلُوهَا عَلَيْكَ These are the Ayat of Allah. We recite them to you, meaning, `These are the verses of Allah, His proofs and signs that We reveal to you, O Muhammad.' بِالْحَقِّ in truth, making known the true reality of this world and the Hereafter. وَمَا اللّهُ يُرِيدُ ظُلْمًا لِّلْعَالَمِينَ and Allah wills no injustice to the Alamin. for He never treats them with injustice. Rather, He is the Just Ruler Who is able to do everything and has knowledge of everything. Therefore, He does not need to treat any of His creatures with injustice. this is why He said next وَلِلّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الَارْضِ and to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the Earth, they are all His servants and His property. وَإِلَى اللّهِ تُرْجَعُ الاُمُورُ And all matters go back to Allah. for His is the decision concerning the affairs of this life and the Hereafter, and His is the Supreme Authority in this life and the Hereafter."

The first principle appears in the first of the two verses. The second principle follows in the second verse. The first principle stated in the said verse is that one must 'fear Allah', that is, one should organize and manage his life with a full sense of responsibility before Allah, avoiding all that is forbidden or undesirable, doing so in a manner 'which is His due'. What تقویٰ Taqwa is? In Arabic, the word, تقویٰ 'Taqwa' is used to denote avoidance and abstinence. It is translated as 'fear' in the sense that things one is asked to abstain from are nothing but things that cause fear, or alert one to the danger of Divine retribution. تقویٰ Taqwa has its own degrees, the lowest is to avoid کفر Kufr and شرک Shirk, that is, disbelieving in Allah and His Message and attributing partners to His Divinity. In this sense, every Muslim can be counted as مُتَّقی Muttaqi (one who has the quality of تقوی Taqwa ), even if he is involved in sins. At several places in the Holy Qur'an, the words, مُتَّقین 'Muttaqin' (plural of مُتَّقی Muttaqi and تقویٰ 'Taqwa ' have been used in that sense as well. What is really desirable falls under the second degree of تقویٰ Taqwa , that is, to avoid that which is disliked by Allah and His Messenger. The merits and blessings of تقویٰ Taqwa enumerated in the Qur'an and Iiadith have been promised on this degree of avoidance and abstinence. As far as the third degree of تقویٰ Taqwa is concerned, this is a high station destined for prophets, (علیہم السلام) ، their devoted deputies and men of Allah, for it is not within the grasp of everybody. To stand guard over one's heart against the onslaught of what does not relate to Allah, and to keep it filled with the remembrance of Allah and the desire to seek His pleasure, are great assignments. The meaning of تقویٰ Taqwa 'as due' While giving a directive to attain تقویٰ 'Taqwa ' the Holy Qur'an has qualified the word of تقویٰ Taqwa with (a fear which is His due) which mean: that one should seek to attain a degree of تقویٰ Taqwa which it inherently deserves. This has been explained by the blessed Companions, ` Abdullah ibn Masud, Rabi', Qatadah and Hasan al-Basri ؓ in the following words: حق تقاتہ ہو ان یطاع فلا یعصٰی و یذکر فلا ینسیٰ ویشکر فلا یکفر (البحر المحیط) 'A fear which is His due' means that one obeys, then does not disobey; remembers then does not forget; and is grateful, then does not become ungrateful.' (Al-Bahr Al-Muhit) The above explanation has also been reported with its chain of authorities ascending to the Holy Prophet ﷺ himself. Major commentators have explained the sense of the above report differently. For instance, some say that the due fear of Allah means that, in obedience to Allah, one should dismiss all derogatory criticism, no matter where it comes from, always standing firm on what is just, even if, by being just, he has to hurt his own self, or his children, or his parents. Some say, that one can never hope to achieve تقویٰ ’ Taqwa as due' unless he protects his tongue. There is another verse in the Holy Qur'an where it is said: اتَّقُوا اللَّـهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ Fear Allah as much as you can. (64:16) According to the blessed Companions, Ibn ` Abbas and Tawus ؓ ، this is really nothing but an explanation of حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ (a fear which is His due). It means that should one be doing his best, using all his attention and energy to guard against evil, the obligation of Taqwa shall stand fulfilled. If one, who has already done everything he could, happens to fall a victim to something impermissible, that would not be considered being against تقویٰ 'Taqwa as due'. The statement which follows immediately: وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ (and let not yourself die save as Muslims) tells us that تقویٰ Taqwa is, in reality, the whole of Islam since the total obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and the total avoidance of disobedience both to Allah and His Messenger is what تقویٰ Taqwa is all about; and this is what Islam is. The command in the verse, 'and let not yourself die save as Muslims' raises a possible doubt as man does not control death, it may come anytime, anywhere. This doubt is removed when we consider the کما تَحِبُّون تموتون و کما تموتون تحشرون 'As you live, so shall you die; and as you die, so shall you be raised.' Therefore, anyone who is determined to live his entire life by the tenets of Islam, and to the best of his determination and ability, acts accordingly, his death will definitely come, God willing, on a state of Islam. Now, about some hadith narrations where it is said that there will be people who may have spent a life-time of good deeds, yet the entire roster of such deeds shall go waste because of something awful they did later. Such fate can befall those people only who did not act with sincerity and steadfastness from the very beginning. And Allah knows best. UNITY: The second principle of collective Muslim strength: In the second verse, 103: وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّـهِ جَمِيعًا (And hold on to the cord of Allah, all of you), the golden principle of unity has been presented with great eloquence and wisdom, for the principle, being the only effective binding factor, has been identified before the command to unite was given, following which, came the prohibition of disunity and chaos. Elaborating this a little, it can be said that unity is something good and desirable, a premise generally approved by all human beings, no matter what place, time, religion or life style they adhere to. A person, who considers fights and disputes as something useful, and good in themselves, would be hard to find anywhere. This is why all groups and parties around the world invariably ask people to unite, but experience shows that all is not well in world affairs. No doubt, everybody agrees that unity is useful, and necessary, yet humanity is divided apart in sects, groups and parties. Then, there is a whole chain of sects within sects and parties within parties, reaching the limits of absurdity where even the unity of two people, in the real sense, has become a myth. A few people get together, agree on something under the driving force of temporary objectives; then, no sooner do interests get served, or remain unrealized, unity evaporates in thin air, and instead, there remains the fall-out of mutual bickering and hostility. With a little deliberation, it will become clear that every group, every sect, almost every person would like to unite people on some self-made programme, while the position is that other people have their own self-made programmes. So, rather than agree with them, they invite others to line up under their programme. Therefore, all calls for unity end up in break-ups and chaos among parties and persons. Thus, stuck in this quagmire of differences, humanity at large is the loser. Therefore, the Holy Qur'an has not stopped at giving sermons on unity and order, instead, it has also come forward with a just principle which would help achieve and sustain the desired state of affairs in the world, something in which no group should find a ground for differences. The truth of the matter is that imposing a system or programme conceived by one or some members of the human race on other human beings, and hoping that all of them will accept it unanimously, is simply against commonsense, and justice, and is nothing but cheeky self-deception. However, the system and the programme given by the Creator-Sustainer of all the worlds, the رَ‌بِّ الْعَالَمِينَ Rabb al-` Alamin, is something all human beings should naturally agree upon. No rational human being can deny it on principle. Now, the only possible inroad to difference here can show up in the actual identification of the system given by the Sovereign of Sovereigns, the رَ‌بِّ Rabb, the Lord. Which is it? The Jews say it is the system of the Torah, the Christians say it is the system of the Evangel; both say it was sent by God and it is necessary to act upon it. The approach goes as far as even the poly-theists, who have groups among them attributing their respective religious rites to none but god. But, if man could rise a little above his group prejudice and the blind following of forefathers, using his own God-given reason, he would stand face to face with the reality without any frills; the reality that the Last of the Prophets, ﷺ ، has come with the last message of Allah Almighty in the form of the Holy Qur'an and that, at this point of time, there is no other system or living pattern acceptable in the sight of Allah Almighty. Leaving this wider focus aside, we can turn to the first and present addressees of the Qur'an, the Muslims who believe that in the world as we have found it, the Holy Qur'an is the only way of life revealed by Allah Almighty without any shadow of doubt in it, and since Allah Almighty has Himself taken the responsibility of protecting it, there is just no possibility of interpolation or change in it right through to the Day of Judgment. With this position in view, I leave the part of the subject dealing with non-Muslim groups for some other occasion and say to Muslims alone who, being believers in the Qur'an, have no other alternative line of action except this. If different parties among Muslims were to unite on the system of the Holy Qur'an, thousands of their differences based on group, race and country would be resolved instantly, which block the road to human progress. Whatever difference may remain among Muslims, would possibly be in the understanding and the interpretation of the Qur'an. If such difference stays within limits, it is neither blame-worthy nor harmful to collective human living. In fact, the existence of such difference of opinion among the learned is natural. Therefore, exercising restraint and observing limits should not be so difficult to manage. Contrary to this, if our parties were to go on fighting in complete disregard to the Qur'an then, they would not be left with any possibility of correction. It is this chronic dissension and disorder which the Holy Qur'an has sternly forbidden, and it is because of this abandonment of a great Qur'anic principle that our community at large is wasting its potential by succumbing to chaos and factionalism. The Holy Qur'an, in the present verse, shows us the way as to how we can eliminate this tendency to become divided when it says: وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّـهِ جَمِيعًا And hold on to the cord of Allah, all of you. Here, حَبْلِ اللَّـهِ (the cord of Allah) means the Holy Qur'an. The blessed Companion, ` Abdullah ibn Masud ؓ is the narrator of the hadith in which the Holy Prophet ﷺ has been reported to have said: کتاب اللہ ہو حبل اللہ الممدود من السماء الی الارض The Book of Allah is the cord of Allah, extended from the heavens to the earth. In another narration of the hadith by the noble Companion, Zayd ibn Arqam ؓ ، the words are: حبل اللہ ہو القرآن : The cord of Allah is the Qur'an (Ibn Kathir). In Arabic usage, the word, حبل 'habl' also means 'covenant' and, in an absolute sense, it covers everything that can be used as a connecting link. The metaphor of 'cord' has been used for the Qur'an or the Faith to suggest that this is the connecting link which, on one side, establishes the lines of communion between those who believe and their Lord, while, on the other side, it brings all those who believe close together, forming one group. In short, this one statement of the Qur'an is full of wise rules of conduct. To begin with, it can be said that man must firmly act in accordance with the way of life revealed by Allah Almighty, that is, the Holy Qur'an. Then comes the unity of action, that is, all Muslims should join hands to act in accordance with it. The result will be that Muslims will become united and organized as if they were a group holding on to the same cord firmly, turning the whole group into a powerful single body. The Holy Qur'an has explained this mystique of Muslim unity more clearly in another verse where it was said: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ سَيَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ الرَّ‌حْمَـٰنُ وُدًّا ﴿96﴾ Surely, those who believe and do good deeds, among them the X11-Merciful Allah shall create (mutual) affection. (19:96) Also present here is a subtle analogy focused on Muslims holding fast to the Book of Allah. Their effort resembles the effort of those who would grip a strong rope while climbing and thus remain protected against a fall. So, the hint is: If Muslims keep holding on to the Book of Allah with their total strength, all in unison, no شیطان satan will ever succeed in dividing them. As a result, like their individual life, the collective strength of the Muslim community as well shall become stable and impregnable. Keeping a firm grip on the Qur'an is some-thing which helps in uniting scattered forces through which a dead nation gets new life. God forbid, if Muslims break away from it, it is certain that their national and collective life will be ruined, and when this happens, their individual life is not likely to fare any better. Islam is the only source of the Muslim Unity Unity and agreement need a centre of attraction or a common idea. This idea of a centre has been different with different peoples of the world. Somewhere it was race and tribal affinity. For instance, among the tribal complex of Arabia, Quraysh was one nation and Banu Tamim another. There were other places where colour was the criterion, with black people taken as one nation, and the white people as another. There were still other places where the geographical or lingual factor was the centre of unity making Indian one nation and the Arab, another. Then there were areas where people rallied around ancestral customs drawing a line between those who follow these customs and those who do not, for instance, the Arya Samajists in India. The Holy Qur'an, bypassing all these, made the Book of Allah basis of unity, that is, the system revealed by Allah Almighty. In a single stroke, it declared that Muslims are a nation attached to حبل للہ 'Hablillah', the cord of Allah, and those who disbelieve are another nation, not attached to this strong 'cord' or 'rope'. The statement: خَلَقَكُمْ فَمِنكُمْ كَافِرٌ‌ وَمِنكُم مُّؤْمِنٌ (It is He who created you. So, some of you are infidels and some of you are believers) means just this. So, the unifying factors of geog-raphy, race, tribe or language do not deserve to be the centre of affinity for man generally has no control over them. One cannot have them by personal effort or choice. Black cannot become white, a Qurayshi cannot become a Tamimi, an Indian cannot become an Arab. Such unities can exist in a very limited frame; they can never claim to have assembled the whole humanity under their umbrella hoping to have the entire world gathered on a united platform. This is why the Holy Qur'an has made the Divinely revealed way of life as the centre of unity, something one can elect to have for himself. Everyone from the East or the West, black or white, speaking Arabic or English or any other language, coming from any family, any tribe, any human group, can freely make this centre of unity his own as the most rational and correct choice available. Then, humankind can come close together around this centre and become brothers and sisters to one another. What is needed is a little impartial thinking, a slight rising above custom, prejudice and habit, as a result of which, the seeker shall be striking the best bargain of his life. Hopefully, he will discover for himself the way of life revealed by Allah Almighty, understand it, and follow it holding fast on to this strong medium of communion with Allah. As a result of this, the whole humanity will become beneficially concentric, having the centre of God-given guidance in common. Consequently, every individual member of this great brotherhood will be able to tune his deeds, material and spiritual, to the jointly accepted way of life from Allah. Here is the principle, wise and correct, of which Muslims can be proud, and confident when inviting others to join in. Unfortunately, conspiracies hatched by the Europeans, for centuries to crush the Muslim unity have succeeded in dividing the ranks of those who claim to be Muslims. Now they have themselves accepted the differences of race, language and nationalities as the dividing forces, and the link of Muslim unity stands severed by the concept of Arabs and Non-Arabs, Indians and non-Indians etc. The Holy Qur'an proclaims a universal reality, loudly and openly, time and again, that these distinctions are ill-founded and divisive and any unity based on them shall remain irrational and false. A centricity is not the solution for Muslims who have no choice but to 'hold on to the cord of Allah', all of them, as a way of life. This has given them a place of honour earlier, and if there is yet another success destined for them, this is how it would come again. Before we move on to the second part of the verse, let us remember the two distinct instructions given to Muslims in this verse, that is, they should first live by the system prescribed for them by Allah Almighty, then, they should hold fast to the cord of Allah' all together. This is how the Muslim ummah gained ascendance in the past and there is no reason why, it will not rise again. This far the discussion revolved around the positive aspect of unity among Muslims. The text now takes up the negative aspect when it says: وَلَا تَفَرَّ‌قُوا (And'be not divided). This is another example of the peculiarly wise style of the Holy Qur'an when it would highlight the positive aspect first, then identify the negative, and forbid the later. In another verse, it was said: وَأَنَّ هَـٰذَا صِرَ‌اطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا فَاتَّبِعُوهُ ۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّ‌قَ بِكُمْ عَن سَبِيلِهِ ۚ Surely, this is the straight path, so, follow it. And do not follow (other) ways which will cause you to become separated from His way. (6:153) Since disunity is the first and the last reason behind the destruction of a nation, therefore, the Holy Qur'an has repeatedly forbidden it in various ways. It has been said in another verse: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَرَّ‌قُوا دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا لَّسْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ Those who have made divisions in their religion and become sects, you have nothing to do with them. (6:159) Also narrated in the Holy Qur'an are events concerning communities led by their prophet's (علیہم السلام) communities which fell into temporal and eternal disgrace because of their mutual disputes and disunity which turned them away from the honest pursuit of their central purpose of life. The Holy Prophet ﷺ has said that there are three things Allah Almighty has liked for you while there are three others He has disliked. The ones He has liked are as follows: 1. That your worship should be for Allah alone and that you should not attribute partners to His divinity. 2. That you should hold on to the Book of Allah firmly and avoid disunity. 3. That you should have goodwill for those in authority from among you. The three things which cause Allah's displeasure are: 1. Unnecessary argumentation. 2. Needless asking. 3. Wastage of resources. (Ibn Kathir from Abi Hurairah) Differences and their Limits A question that remains unanswered is: Is every difference to be despised or is there a sort of difference which can be called un-blameworthy? The answer is: Every difference is not blameworthy or despicable. A blameworthy difference is one in which individuals and groups stay away from the Qur'an and think in terms of their whims and wishes. But, should it be that everyone stays united in and around the Qur'an and at the same time, continues to accept the explanation and detail coming from the Holy Prophet ﷺ and then, on the basis of God-given natural ability and intellectual quality, expresses differences in opinion about subsidiaries of religion, in which case, this difference will be natural and Islam does not forbid it. The difference among the blessed Companions and their Successors and among leading juristic authorities was of this nature. It was nothing but this difference that was called a 'mercy' for the community. However, if these very subsidiary debates were to be invested with the status of the mainstream of religion, and differences arising out of them were to become a cause of controversy, confrontation, insult and vilification, then, this too will be considered blameworthy. The Blessing of Brotherhood The text, after making the two aspects of unity clear, points out to the conditions prevailing among pre-Islam Arabs. Because of tribal rivalries, incessant warfare and long-drawn blood feuds, the entire nation was on the brink of total ruin. What saved them from the fire of hatred was nothing but these blessings of Islam. So, it was said: وَاذْكُرُ‌وا نِعْمَتَ اللَّـهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ كُنتُمْ أَعْدَاءً فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُم بِنِعْمَتِهِ إِخْوَانًا وَكُنتُمْ عَلَىٰ شَفَا حُفْرَ‌ةٍ مِّنَ النَّارِ‌ فَأَنقَذَكُم مِّنْهَا And remember the blessing of Allah upon you: When you were enemies to each other, and He brought your hearts together, then you, with His grace, became brothers. And you were at the brink of a pit of the Fire, then, He saved you from it. (103) In other words, by erasing out deep-seated enmities going back to centuries, Allah Almighty made them brothers to each other through the benediction of Islam and the noble Prophet ﷺ . This made their life worth living, materially and spiritually, establishing between them such exemplary friendship that even their enemies found it awesome. Where in the whole wide world would they have found this brotherly unity, this enormous blessing of Allah, even if they were to spend the combined treasures of the world? If we recollect what was said in the opening remarks under these verses, we can see very clearly that the present verse helps eliminate the mischief engineered by the wicked when they tried to disunite the tribes of Aws and Khazraj by reminding them of their past feuds. The lesson is: Once in Islam, division is unthinkable. Unity among Muslims depends on obedience to Allah: The above statement of the Holy Qur'an unravels yet another mystery. We now know that, in reality, Allah Almighty is the Master of hearts. Activating mutual love and consideration in the hearts of a people is purely a Divine blessing. Obvious along with it is the fact that one can become deserving of the blessings of Allah only through obedience to Him. With disobedience and sin, one cannot hope to have this reward. It also follows from here that for Muslims, if they desire to have a stable organization among them, and unity, the only alternative open is that they should make obedience to Allah their life style. This point has been hinted at towards the end of the verse where it was said: كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللَّـهُ لَكُمْ آيَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ This is how Allah makes His signs clear to you, so that you may take the right path. (103)

Tafsir Surat Ali-'Imran: 102-103 Wahai orang-orang yang beriman, bertakwalah kepada Allah dengan sebenar-benar takwa kepada-Nya; dan janganlah sekali-kali kalian mati melainkan dalam keadaan beragama Islam. Dan berpegang teguhlah kalian semuanya pada tali (agama) Allah, dan janganlah kalian bercerai-berai, dan ingatlah nikmat Allah kepada kalian ketika kalian dahulu (di masa Jahiliyah) bermusuh-musuhan, lalu Allah mempersatukan hati-hati kalian, sehingga dengan karunia-Nya kalian menjadi bersaudara, padahal (ketika itu) kalian berada di tepi jurang neraka, lalu Allah menyelamatkan kalian darinya. Demikianlah Allah menerangkan ayat-ayat-Nya kepada kalian agar kalian mendapat petunjuk. Ayat 102 Ibnu Abu Hatim mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Muhammad ibnu Sinan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Abdur Rahman ibnu Sufyan dan Syu'bah, dari Zubaid Al-Yami, dari Murrah, dari Abdullah ibnu Mas'ud sehubungan dengan makna firman-Nya: “Bertakwalah kepada Allah dengan sebenar-benar takwa kepada-Nya.” (Ali Imran: 102 Yaitu dengan taat kepada-Nya dan tidak bermaksiat terhadapnya, selalu mengingat-Nya dan tidak lupa kepada-Nya, selalu bersyukur kepada-Nya dan tidak ingkar terhadap nikmat-Nya. Sanad atsar ini shahih lagi mauquf. Ibnu Abu Hatim mengikuti sesudah Murrah (yaitu Amr ibnu Maimun), dari Ibnu Mas'ud. Ibnu Mardawaih meriwayatkannya melalui hadits Yunus ibnu Abdul A'la, dari Ibnu Wahb, dari Sufyan Ats-Tsauri, dari Zubaid, dari Murrah, dari Abdullah Ibnu Mas'ud yang menceritakan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ membaca firman-Nya: “Bertakwalah kepada Allah dengan sebenar-benar takwa kepada-Nya.” (Ali Imran: 102), lalu beliau bersabda menafsirkannya bahwa hendaknya Allah ditaati, tidak boleh durhaka kepada-Nya, bersyukur kepada-Nya dan jangan ingkar kepada (nikmat)-Nya, dan selalu ingat kepada-Nya dan tidak melupakan-Nya. Hal yang sama diriwayatkan oleh Imam Hakim di dalam kitab Mustadrak-nya melalui hadits Mis'ar, dari Zubaid, dari Murrah, dari Ibnu Mas'ud secara marfu' (yakni sampai kepada Rasulullah ﷺ). Kemudian Imam Hakim menuturkan hadits ini, lalu berkata, "Predikat hadits shahih dengan syarat Syaikhain, tetapi keduanya tidak mengetengahkannya." Demikianlah menurut penilaian Imam Hakim. Tetapi menurut pendapat yang kuat, predikatnya adalah mauquf (hanya sampai pada Ibnu Mas'ud saja). lbnu Abu Hatim mengatakan, telah diriwayatkan hal yang serupa dari Murrah Al-Hamdani, Ar-Rab'i ibnu Khaisam, Amr ibnu Maimun, Ibrahim An-Nakha'i, Tawus, Al-Hasan, Qatadah, Abu Sinan, dan As-Suddi. Telah diriwayatkan pula dari sahabat Anas; ia pernah mengatakan bahwa seorang hamba masih belum dikatakan benar-benar bertakwa kepada Allah sebelum mengekang (memelihara) lisannya. Sa'id ibnu Jubair, Abul Aliyah, Ar-Rabi' ibnu Anas, Qatadah, Muqatil ibnu Hayyan, Zaid ibnu Aslam, As-Suddi, dan lain-lain berpendapat bahwa ayat ini (Ali Imran: 102) telah dimansukh (direvisi) oleh firman-Nya: “Maka bertakwalah kalian kepada Allah sesuai kesanggupan kalian.” (At-Taghabun: 16) Ali ibnu Abu Talhah meriwayatkan dari Ibnu Abbas sehubungan dengan firman-Nya: “Bertakwalah kepada Allah dengan sebenar-benar takwa kepada-Nya.” (Ali Imran: 102) Bahwa ayat ini tidak dimansukh, dan yang dimaksud dengan haqqa tuqatih ialah berjihadlah kalian di jalan Allah dengan sebenar-benar jihad demi membela agama Allah, dan janganlah kalian enggan demi membela Allah hanya karena celaan orang-orang yang mencela; tegakkanlah keadilan, sekalipun terhadap diri kalian dan orang-orang tua kalian serta anak-anak kalian sendiri. Firman Allah ﷻ: “Dan janganlah sekali-kali kalian mati melainkan dalam keadaan beragama Islam.” (Ali Imran: 102) Artinya, peliharalah Islam dalam diri kalian sewaktu kalian sehat dan sejahtera agar kalian nanti mati dalam keadaan beragama Islam, karena sesungguhnya sifat dermawan itu terbina dalam diri seseorang berkat kebiasaannya dalam berderma. Barang siapa yang hidup menjalani suatu hal, maka ia pasti mati dalam keadaan berpegang kepada hal itu; dan barang siapa yang mati dalam keadaan berpegang kepada suatu hal, maka kelak ia dibangkitkan dalam keadaan tersebut. Kami berlindung kepada Allah dari kebalikan hal tersebut. Imam Ahmad mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Rauh, telah menceritakan kepada kami Syu'bah, bahwa Sulaiman pernah mengatakan dari Mujahid, "Sesungguhnya ketika orang-orang sedang melakukan tawaf di Baitullah dan Ibnu Abbas sedang duduk berpegang kepada tongkatnya, lalu ia mengatakan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda seraya membacakan firman-Nya: 'Wahai orang-orang yang beriman, bertakwalah kepada Allah dengan sebenar-benar takwa kepada-Nya; dan janganlah sekali-kali kalian mati melainkan dalam keadaan beragama Islam' (Ali Imran: 102). Seandainya setetes dari zaqqum (makanan ahli neraka) dijatuhkan ke dunia ini, niscaya tetesan zaqqum itu akan merusak semua makanan penduduk dunia. Maka bagaimana dengan orang yang tidak mempunyai makanan lain kecuali hanya zaqqum (yakni ahli neraka) ." Hal yang sama diriwayatkan oleh Imam At-Tirmidzi, Imam An-Nasai, Imam Ibnu Majah, dan Imam Ibnu Hibban di dalam kitab sahihnya; serta Imam Hakim di dalam kitab Mustadrak-nya melalui jalur Syu'bah dengan lafal yang sama. Imam At-Tirmidzi mengatakan hadits ini hasan shahih. Imam Hakim mengatakan shahih dengan syarat Syaikhain, tetapi keduanya tidak mengetengahkan hadits ini. Imam Ahmad mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Waki', telah menceritakan kepada kami Al-A'masy, dari Zaid ibnu Wahb, dari Abdur Rahman ibnu Abdu Rabbil Ka'bah, dari Abdullah ibnu Amr yang menceritakan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: “Barang siapa yang suka dijauhkan dari neraka dan dimasukkan ke dalam surga, maka hendaklah di saat kematian menemuinya ia dalam keadaan beriman kepada Allah dan hari kemudian, dan hendaklah ia memberikan kepada orang lain apa yang ia sukai bila diberikan kepada dirinya sendiri.” Imam Ahmad mengatakan pula bahwa telah menceritakan kepada kami Abu Mu'awiyah, telah menceritakan kepada kami Al-A'masy, dari Abu Sufyan, dari Jabir yang menceritakan bahwa ia mendengar Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda tiga hari sebelum wafat, yaitu: “Jangan sekali-kali seseorang di antara kalian meninggal dunia melainkan ia dalam keadaan berbaik sangka kepada Allah ﷻ.” Imam Muslim meriwayatkannya melalui jalur Al-A'masy dengan lafal yang sama. Imam Ahmad mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Hasan ibnu Musa, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ibnu Luhai'ah, telah menceritakan kepada kami Yunus, dari Abu Hurairah, dari Rasulullah ﷺ, bahwa beliau ﷺ pernah bersabda: “Sesungguhnya Allah telah berfirman, ‘Aku mengikuti prasangka hamba-Ku terhadap diri-Ku. Jika dia menyangka balk kepada-Ku, maka itulah yang didapatinya. Dan jika dia berprasangka buruk terhadap-Ku, maka itulah yang didapatinya’." Asal hadits ini ditetapkan di dalam kitab Shahihain melalui jalur lain dari Abu Hurairah, bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: “Allah berfirman, ‘Aku menuruti prasangka hamba-Ku terhadap diri-Ku’." Al-Hafidzh Abu Bakar Al-Bazzar mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Muhammad ibnu Abdul Malik Al-Qurasyi, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ja'far ibnu Sulaiman, dari Sabit menurut dugaanku dari Anas yang menceritakan bahwa ada seorang lelaki dari kalangan Anshar mengalami sakit, maka Nabi ﷺ datang menjenguknya. Dan di lain waktu Nabi ﷺ bejumpa dengannya di pasar, lalu beliau mengucapkan salam kepadanya dan bertanya kepadanya, "Bagaimanakah keadaanmu, wahai Fulan?" Lelaki itu menjawab, "Dalam keadaan baik, wahai Rasulullah. Aku berharap kepada Allah, tetapi aku takut akan dosa-dosaku." Maka Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: “Tidak sekali-kali berkumpul di dalam kalbu seorang hamba yang dalam keadaan seperti ini (yakni sakit), melainkan Allah memberinya apa yang diharapkannya, dan mengamankannya dari apa yang dikhawatirkannya.” Kemudian Al-Bazzar mengatakan bahwa kami tidak mengetahui perawi yang meriwayatkannya dari Sabit selain Ja'far ibnu Sulaiman. Demikian pula Imam At-Tirmidzi, Imam An-Nasai, dan Imam Ibnu Majah meriwayatkannya dari hadisnya. Imam At-Tirmidzi mengatakan bahwa hadits ini garib. Hal yang sama diriwayatkan oleh sebagian mereka (para perawi) dari Sabit secara mursal. Adapun hadits yang diriwayatkan oleh Imam Ahmad seperti berikut: Telah menceritakan kepada kami Muhammad ibnu Ja'far, telah menceritakan kepada kami Syu'bah, dari Abu Bisyr, dari Yusuf ibnu Mahik, dari Hakim ibnu Hizam yang menceritakan: “Aku telah berbaiat (berjanji setia) kepada Rasulullah ﷺ bahwa aku tidak akan mundur kecuali dalam keadaan berdiri.” Imam An-Nasai meriwayatkannya di dalam kitab sunannya dari Ismail ibnu Mas'ud, dari Khalid ibnul Haris, dari Syu'bah dengan lafal yang sama; dan ia mengategorikannya ke dalam Bab "Cara Menyungkur untuk Bersujud", lalu ia mengetengahkannya dengan lafal yang serupa. Menurut suatu pendapat, makna hadits di atas ialah bahwa aku tidak akan mati kecuali dalam keadaan sebagai orang muslim. Menurut pendapat yang lain lagi, makna yang dimaksud ialah bahwa aku tidak sekali-kali berperang (berjihad) melainkan dalam keadaan menghadap (maju), bukan membelakangi (mundur/lari). Pengertian ini merujuk kepada makna yang pertama. Ayat 103 Firman Allah ﷻ: “Dan berpeganglah kaian semuanya kepada tali (agama) Allah, dan janganlah kalian bercerai-berai.” (Ali Imran: 103) Menurut suatu pendapat, yang dimaksud dengan hablillah ialah janji Allah. Seperti yang disebutkan di dalam ayat selanjutnya, yaitu firman-Nya: “Mereka diliputi kehinaan di mana saja mereka berada, kecuali jika mereka berpegang kepada tali (agama) Allah dan tali (perjanjian) dengan manusia. (Ali Imran: 112) Yakni janji dan jaminan. Menurut pendapat lain, yang dimaksud ialah Al-Qur'an. Sebagaimana yang disebutkan di dalam hadits Al-Haris Al-A'war, dari sahabat Ali secara marfu' mengenai sifat Al-Qur'an, yaitu: Al-Qur'an adalah tali Allah yang kuat dan jalan-Nya yang lurus. Sehubungan dengan hal ini terdapat hadits yang khusus membahas mengenai makna ini. Untuk itu Imam Al-Hafidzh Abu Ja'far At-Tabari mengatakan: telah menceritakan kepada kami Sa'id ibnu Yahya Al-Umawi, telah menceritakan kepada kami Asbat ibnu Muhammad, dari Abdul Malik ibnu Sulaiman Al-Azrami, dari Atiyyah, dari Abu Sa'id yang menceritakan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: “Kitabullah (Al-Qur'an) adalah tali Allah yang menjulur dari langit ke bumi.” Ibnu Mardawaih meriwayatkan dari jalur Ibrahim ibnu Muslim Al-Hijri, dari Abu Ahwas, dari Abdullah yang menceritakan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: “Sesungguhnya Al-Qur'an ini adalah tali Allah yang kuat. Dia adalah cahaya yang jelas, dia adalah penawar yang bermanfaat, perlindungan bagi orang yang berpegang kepadanya, dan keselamatan bagi orang yang mengikuti (petunjuk)Nya.” Telah diriwayatkan dari hadits Huzaifah dan Zaid ibnu Arqam tentang hal yang serupal. Waki' mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Al-A'masy, dari Abu Wail yang menceritakan bahwa Abdullah pernah mengatakan (bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda kepadanya): “Sesungguhnya jalan itu adalah tempat lalu lalang, setan-setan selalu datang kepadanya. Wahai Abdullah, ambillah jalan ini, kemarilah, tempuhlah jalan ini. Maka mereka berpegang kepada tali Allah karena sesungguhnya tali Allah itu adalah Al-Qur'an.” Firman Allah ﷻ: “Dan jangan kalian bercerai-berai.” (Ali Imran: 103) Allah memenntahkan kepada mereka untuk menetapi jamaah (kesatuan) dan melarang mereka bercerai-berai. Banyak hadits yang isinya melarang bercerai-berai dan memerintahkan untuk bersatu dan rukun. Seperti yang dinyatakan di dalam kitab Shahih Muslim melalui hadits Suhail ibnu Abu Saleh, dari ayahnya, dari Abu Hurairah, bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: “Sesungguhnya Allah rida kepada kalian dalam tiga perkara dan murka kepada kalian dalam tiga perkara. Allah rida kepada kalian bila kalian menyembah-Nya dan kalian tidak mempersekutukan-Nya dengan sesuatu pun, bila kalian sekalian berpegang teguh kepada tali Allah dan tidak bercerai-berai, dan bila kalian saling menasihati dengan orang yang dikuasakan oleh Allah untuk mengurus perkara kalian. Dan Allah murka kepada kalian dalam tiga perkara, yaitu qil dan qal (banyak bicara atau berdebat), banyak bertanya dan menyia-nyiakan (menghambur-hamburkan) harta.” Bilamana mereka hidup dalam persatuan dan kesatuan, niscaya terjaminlah mereka dari kekeliruan, seperti yang disebutkan oleh banyak hadits mengenai hal tersebut. Sangat dikhawatirkan bila mereka bercerai-berai dan bertentangan. Hal ini ternyata menimpa umat ini, hingga bercerai-berailah mereka menjadi tujuh puluh tiga golongan. Di antaranya terdapat suatu golongan yang selamat masuk surga dan diselamatkan dari siksa neraka. Mereka adalah orang-orang yang mengikuti jejak yang telah dilakukan oleh Nabi ﷺ dan para sahabatnya. Firman Allah ﷻ: “Dan ingatlah nikmat Allah kepada kalian ketika kalian dahulu (di masa Jahiliyah) bermusuh-musuhan, lalu Allah mempersatukan hati-hati kalian, sehingga dengan karunia-Nya kalian menjadi bersaudara.” (Ali Imran: 103), hingga akhir ayat. Konteks ayat ini berkaitan dengan keadaan kabilah Aus dan kabilah Khazraj, karena sesungguhnya dahulu di antara mereka sering terjadi peperangan, yaitu di masa Jahiliah. Kedengkian dan permusuhan, pertentangan yang keras di antara mereka menyebabkan meletusnya perang yang berkepanjangan di antara sesama mereka. Ketika Islam datang dan masuk Islamlah sebagian orang di antara mereka, maka jadilah mereka sebagai saudara yang saling mengasihi berkat keagungan Allah. Mereka dipersatukan oleh agama Allah dan saling membantu dalam kebajikan dan ketakwaan. Allah ﷻ berfirman: “Dialah yang menguatkanmu dengan pertolongan-Nya dan dengan (dukungan) orang-orang mukmin, dan yang mempersatukan hati mereka (orang-orang yang beriman). Walaupun kamu membelanjakan semua (kekayaan) yang berada di bumi, niscaya kamu tidak akan dapat mempersatukan hati-hati mereka, tetapi Allah-lah yang telah mempersatukan hati-hati mereka.” (Al-Anfal: 62-63) Sebelum itu mereka berada di tepi jurang neraka karena kekafiran mereka, lalu Allah menyelamatkan mereka darinya dengan memberi mereka petunjuk kepada iman. Sesungguhnya hal tersebut disebut-sebut oleh Rasulullah ﷺ pada hari beliau membagi-bagikan ganimah Hunain, lalu ada sebagian orang yang merasa kurang puas karena ada sebagian yang lain mendapat bagian yang lebih banyak daripada mereka. Nabi ﷺ sengaja melakukan demikian karena berdasarkah apa yang dianjurkan oleh Allah ﷻ kepadanya. Lalu Nabi ﷺ bersabda kepada mereka: “Wahai orang-orang Anshar, bukankah aku menjumpai kalian dalam keadaan sesat, lalu Allah memberi petunjuk kepada kalian melalui diriku; dan kalian dalam keadaan bercerai-berai, lalu Allah mempersatukan kalian melalui diriku; dan kalian dalam keadaan miskin, lalu Allah memberi kecukupan kepada kalian melalui aku?” Setiap kalimat yang diucapkan Nabi ﷺ hanya bisa mereka katakan dengan kalimat berikut sebagai pengakuan mereka, "Hanya kepada Allah dan Rasul-Nya kami percaya." Muhammad ibnu Ishaq ibnu Yasar dan lain-lainnya menceritakan bahwa ayat ini diturunkan berkenaan dengan peristiwa yang dialami oleh kabilah Aus dan kabilah Khazraj. Itu terjadi ketika ada seorang lelaki Yahudi lewat di hadapan sejumlah orang penting dari kalangan kabilah Aus dan kabilah Khazraj, maka si Yahudi itu merasa tidak senang dengan kesatuan dan kerukunan yang ada di antara mereka. Lalu ia mengirimkan seorang lelaki kepercayaannya dan memerintahkan kepadanya duduk bersama mereka dan mengingatkan mereka kepada peristiwa-peristiwa masa lalu yang pernah terjadi di antara mereka, yaitu peperangan Bi'as dan peperangan-peperangan lainnya yang terjadi di antara sesama mereka. Kemudian lelaki utusan si Yahudi itu melakukan apa yang diperintahkan kepadanya; dengan tekunnya ia melakukan tugas tersebut secara rutin, hingga suasana kaum menjadi panas kembali dan bangkitlah amarah sebagian mereka terhadap sebagian yang lain. Lalu timbullah fanatisme mereka, dan masing-masing pihak menyerukan semboyan-semboyannya, lalu mempersiapkan senjatanya masing-masing dan mengadakan tantangan kepada lawannya di tempat yang terbuka pada hari tertentu. Ketika berita tersebut sampai kepada Nabi ﷺ, maka beliau mendatangi mereka, lalu beliau meredakan dan melerai mereka serta bersabda: “Apakah kalian menyerukan seruan Jahiliah (kebodohan), sedangkan aku ada di antara kalian?" Kemudian Rasulullah ﷺ membacakan ayat ini kepada mereka. Akhirnya mereka menyesali perbuatannya, lalu mereka berdamai, saling berpelukan, dan semua senjata mereka lemparkan. Semoga Allah melimpahkan rida-Nya kepada mereka. Ikrimah menyebutkan bahwa peristiwa tersebut menimpa mereka ketika mereka dalam keadaan emosi karena peristiwa berita bohong (haditsul ifki).

MENGETUK HATI NURANI AHLUL KITAB “Katakanlah! Wahai Ahlul Kitab! Mengapa kamu tidak percaya kepada ayat-ayat Allah itu, padahal Allah menyaksikan apa-apa yang kamu kerjakan?" (ayat 98) Di dalam ayat ini kita melihat Allah memberikan satu macam tuntunan dakwah kepada Rasul, yaitu mengetuk hati atau menyadarkan pihak lawan, supaya mereka jangan mendustai hati nurani sendiri. Karena hati nurani itu kalau dibebaskan dari hawa nafsu, tidak lain, dia pasti akan mengatakan bahwa yang benar itu tetaplah benar. Hati nurani tidak pernah berbohong. Maka, Nabi disuruh menanyakan kepada Ahlul Kitab. Di dalam ayat ini yang dimaksud Ahlul Kitab ialah pemuka-pemuka Yahudi di Madinah ataupun utusan-utusan Nasrani dari Najran itu. Mengapa mereka masih juga belum mau percaya kepada ayat-ayat Allah itu? Seum-pama telah disebutkan di atas tadi, bukti-bukti telah banyak menunjukkan bahwa Ibrahim sebagai nenek moyang segala keturunan Semiet (bangsa keturunan Sam) yang mendirikan Ka'bah; tandanya masih dapat dilihat, satu di antaranya ialah Maqam Ibrahim, Kamu tidak dapat lagi memungkiri kebenaran itu. Dan kamu pun tidak akan dapat memungkiri bahwa kedatangan Rasulullah ﷺ adalah penyambung ajaran Ibrahim, sedang ajaran Ibrahim yang sejati tentang tauhid terdapat pula dalam kitab-kitabmu sendiri. Mengapa kamu masih berkeras kepala juga mempertahankan pendirian yang salah? Padahal apa yang kamu perbuat dan apa yang kamu kerjakan senantiasa tidak terlepas dari tilikan Allah, Di kalangan orang-orang Yahudi dan Nasrani itu pasti ada orang-orang yang halus perasaannya. Teguran kepada mereka secara lunak lembut lebih berkesan dalam jiwa mereka daripada teguran kasar. Mereka selama ini mengakui lebih tinggi daripada orang Arab ja-hiliyyah, karena mereka keturunan Ahli Kitab, Mereka mempunyai Taurat, Zabur, dan Injil. Di dalam Taurat, Zabur, dan Injil itu pasti terdapat kebenaran, tidak ada kebohongan. Sekarang hati mereka diketuk dengan terlebih dahulu mengakui bahwa memang mereka kaum yang menerima kitab. Sekarang telah bertemu tanda-tanda bahwa memang Ka'bah adalah rumah pertama untuk menyembah Allah Yang Maha Esa. Pendirinya memang Nabi Ibrahim dan tanda-tanda dalam kitabmu sendiri pun mengakui hai itu. Maka, kalau kamu ingin menegakkan kebenaran, apalagi yang menghalangimu mengakuinya? Kemudian, datang lagi tempelak (celaan/ teguran untuk menunjukkan kebenaran, peny.) selanjutnya, “Katakanlah: Wahai Ahlul Kitab! Mengapa kamu palingkan orang-orang yang beriman dari jalan Allah, karena keinginan kamu agar dia bengkok? Padahal kamu menyaksikan.'" (pangkal ayat 99) Mengapa kamu securang itu? Mengapa kamu tidak jujur, padahal kamu orang yang keturunan kitab? Dalam kitab-kitab yang kamu pegang itu, tersebutlah hikmat dan ajaran budi yang tinggi, sepatutnya kamu peganglah isi kitab itu. Dan kalau dia kamu pegang, niscaya tidaklah ada alasan bagi kamu menolak seruan Muhammad. Namun sekarang, usahkan mengakui kebenaran itu, bahkan kamu sanggah. Bukan saja kamu sanggah, bahkan kamu halang-halangi orang lain yang mau percaya kepadanya. Untuk itu kamu telah berbuat perbuatan yang salah sekali. Jalan yang lurus kamu bengkokkan, maksud yang baik kamu salah artikan, fitnah yang dusta kamu karang-karangkan. Padahal kamu menyaksikan sendiri bahwa seruan Muhammad itu tidak ada yang menyalahi isi kitab yang kamu pegang itu. Sama berisi tauhid ajaran Ibrahim! “Dan tidaklah Allah lengah dari apa yang kamu kerjakan." (ujung ayat 99) Allah tidak melengahkan perbuatanmu itu. Allah mengetahui dari mana sebabnya, yaitu dengki, karena Nabi timbul dari kalangan Arab, atau karena pantang kelintasan, sebab selama ini kamu merasa bahwa kamulah yang paling tinggi. Dengki dan sombong yang menjadi pangkalnya. Menurut satu riwayat yang dibawakan oleh al-Fariyabi dan Ibnu Abi Hatim dari Ibnu Abbas, sebab timbulnya ayat ini ialah kekacauan yang ditimbulkan oleh orang-orang Yahudi di Madinah di antara orang-orang yang telah beriman. Dijelaskan pula oleh riwayat ibnu Ishaq dan Abu Syekh bahwa orang Yahudi dengki dan benci melihatoleh karena dua suku. Aus dan Khazraj, sejak menerima ajaran Nabi Muhammad ﷺ telah hidup sangat damai dan berkasih sayang. Maka, ada seorang Yahudi tua benci benar melihat itu, namanya Syaas bin Qais. Sedang orang-orang Aus dan Khazraj itu duduk bersama dalam suasana gembira dan bersatu, Syaas datang masuk ke majelis mereka. Dengan amat pintarnya, dibukanyalah kembali hal yang lama-lama, yaitu Aus dan Khazraj pernah berperang sesama sendiri atau perang kabilah yang mereka namai Perang Ba'ats. Mula-mula masih bercerita, lama-lama bongkar-membongkar siapa yang kalah dan siapa yang menang, sampai bertengkar dan nyaris berkelahi. Si Syaas tersenyum-senyum sebab maksudnya berhasil. Syukurlah lekas Rasulullah ﷺ mengetahui hal ini. Beliau segera datang ke tempat mereka. Setelah Rasulullah ﷺ kelihatan, mereka pun terdiam semua, perkelahian tidak terjadi. Maka, beliau berilah mereka nasihat sebaik-baiknya dan beliau mendamaikan mereka. Mereka pun insaflah dan menyesali kebodohan mereka serta memperbarui kembali ketaatan mereka kepada Rasulullah ﷺ Kemudian, datanglah ayat ini menyesali kelakuan yang rendah Syaas bin Qais itu dan juga teman-temannya dari Ahlul Kitab yang lain, yang usahkan beriman kepada Muhammad ﷺ, bahkan mereka mengacaukan kaum Muslimin, membengkokkan jalan mereka yang lurus, membangkit-bangkitkan kembali permusuhan jahiliyyah yang telah ditinggalkan. Menurut riwayat yang lain yang lebih panjang, dalam Peperangan Ba'ats zaman jahiliyyah yang dibangkit-bangkitkan oleh Syaas bin Qais itu telah terjadi pertumpahan darah hebat antara Aus dengan Khazraj, dengan kemenangan Aus. Beberapa orang dari pihak Khazraj demikian naik darahnya sehingga diajaknya kalangan Aus mengulang perang itu kembali ketika itu juga. Beberapa orang Aus telah berkumpul mencari sesama Aus dan orang Khazraj begitu pula. Tiba-tiba ha! ini diketahui Rasul, segera beliau datang diiringkan oleh beberapa orang Muhajirin. Melihat beliau datang semua terdiam. Setelah tenang, berpidatolah beliau di hadapan mereka: “Ma'asyiral Muslimin! Allah, Allah! Mengapa kamu bangkit-bangkit kembali dakwa jahiliyyah? Padahal aku masih ada di tengah-tengah kamu? Sesudah Allah memberi kamu hidayah dengan Islam? Sesudah kamu di-muliakan-Nya dengan Islam dan dipotong akar-akar jahiliyyah itu? Sesudah kamu dicabutkan dari kekafiran? Sesudah kamu dipersatukan? Lalu kamu hendak kembali jadi kafir?" Mendengar perkataan Rasulullah itu, sadarlah kaum itu akan diri, insaflah mereka bahwa setan telah mengacaukan mereka dan mereka telah ditipu oleh musuh mereka, Yahudi itu. Maka, senjata-senjata yang telah mereka siapkan, mereka lemparkan, mereka menangis lalu berpeluk-pelukan satu sama lain, Aus dan Khazraj. Kemudian, mereka tinggalkan tempat itu, mereka ikut Rasulullah meninggalkan tempat itu dengan patuh dan taat. Maka, dipadamkan oleh Allah api jahiliyyah yang telah dikobarkan oleh setan dan oleh Syaas bin Qais, Yahudi itu. Berkata Ibnu Jarir dalam tafsirnya, “Maka turunlah ayat ini. Wahai Ahlul Kitab! Mengapa kamu palingkan dari jalan Allah orang-orang yang telah beriman (sampai ujung ayat ini), sebagai teguran kepada si Syaas bin Qais pengacau itu." Dan terhadap kepada Aus bin Qaizhij dan Jabbar bin Shakhr, kedua pemuka Aus dan Khazraj yang telah gelap mata itu beserta kaum mereka masing-masing turun pulalah ayat berikutnya yang demikian bunyinya, “Wahai orang-orang yang beriman! Jikalau kamu ikuti (kehendak) segolongan dari orang-orang yang keturunan Ahlul Kitab itu, niscaya mereka akan mengembalikan kamu jadi kafir, sesudah kamu beriman." (ayat 100) Jika kita renungi ayat ini dan ayat yang sebelumnya, dapatlah kita melihat wibawa dan kekuasaan Rasulullah ﷺ di Madinah waktu itu. Baik kaum Yahudi yang keturunan kitab itu, atau kaum Muslimin yang telah beriman kepada ajaran Muhammad ﷺ, keduanya adalah rakyat beliau. Yang pertama diberinya nasihat bahwa tidaklah baik memungkiri kebenaran, sebab kebenaran itu ada dalam hati sendiri, dan tidaklah baik mengacaukan, menghasut, dan memfitnah terhadap kaum Muslimin. Sebab, agama mereka sendiri tidaklah pernah diganggu oleh kaum Muslimin setelah demikian lamanya bergaul dalam Madinah. Perbuatan demikian adalah melanggar inti sari perintah agama mereka sendiri. Kalau mereka tilik di dalam kitab Taurat yang mereka pegang, di sana terdapatlah beberapa janji di antara Bani Israil dengan Allah, agar bersikap kasih sayang antara sesama manusia. Setelah itu Nabi Muhammad ﷺ menyampaikan pula peringatannya kepada kaum yang telah beriman, supaya mereka selalu berhati-hati, siap dan waspada, jangan sampai kehendak sebagian daripada Ahlul Kitab itu kamu turuti. Bujuk rayu mereka jangan didengarkan. Karena maksud mereka tidak lain ialah supaya kamu jadi kafir kembali. Supaya kamu kembali ke dalam hidup jahiliyyah; bermusuh-musuhan antara kamu, berperang antara kabilah dengan kabilah. Kembali dari terang-benderang iman kepada gelap gulita kufur. Dan kalau itu kejadian, kamu akan lemah kembali sesudah kuat. Setelah kamu lemah kembali, Yahudilah yang akan menguasai kamu. Dalam zaman modern kita ini, selalu kita mendengar apa yang dinamai provokasi atau intimidasi dan ketika kitab tafsir ini diselesaikan, timbul lagi kata lain yang disebut gerpol atau gerilya politik. Pihak musuh berusaha membuat berbagai hasut fitnah supaya persatuan yang kompak dan teguh menjadi pecah belah, di antara satu golongan dan golongan yang lain tidak ada percaya-memercayai lagi. Demikianlah pula yang dibuat oleh Yahudi di Madinah terhadap kaum beriman yang telah bersatu-padu. Bersatu-padu antara Muhajirin dan Anshar. Bersatu-padu antara Aus dan Khazraj. Bersatu-padu antara kabilah dengan kabilah. Yahudi insaf bahwa kalau persatuan ini terus, mereka tidak akan naik lagi. Satu kekuatan baru telah tumbuh di bawah pimpinan Muhammad ﷺ Sebab itu, mereka selalu akan berusaha memecahkan persatuan itu. Maka datang lanjutan ayat lagi, memberi kesadaran kepada orang beriman, “Dan bagaimana kamu akan kufur, padahal telah dibacakan kepada kamu ayat-ayat Allah" (pangkal ayat 101) Pangkal ayat ini adalah guna menimbulkan harga diri tiap-tiap Mukmin. Bahwasanya bukan orang-orang semacam mereka yang dapat dihasut fitnah oleh Ahlul Kitab yang dari golongan yang tidak jujur itu. Orang-orang yang telah selalu mendengar ayat Allah, yaitu Al-Qur'an yang datang dari Allah, dibawa oleh Jibril kepada Rasul, langsung diajarkan pula kepada mereka, tidaklah akan mudah dihasut-hasut oleh orang lain. Dengan datangnya ayat-ayat Allah dan ayat itu telah dibacakan kepada mereka, kedudukan mereka sudah lain dari dahulu. Mereka telah dituntun oleh Allah sendiri. Dan kalau selama ini Ahlul Kitab membanggakan diri karena mereka ada kitab, maka sekarang pun mereka telah mempunyai kitab pula, isi ayat-ayat AL-Qur'an itu telah menasikhkan ayat-ayat kitab yang dahulu; “Dan di antara kamu ada Rasul-Nya." Artinya, bahwa kamu ada berpemimpin, yaitu Rasul sendiri. Kalau ada suatu hal yang musykil, janganiah kamu mengambil tindakan sendiri-sendiri, melainkan nantikan keterangan dan pimpinan dari beliau. Adapun Ahlul Kitab itu bukan pemimpinmu. Kalau ada bujuk rayu mereka kepada kamu, pasti ada tersimpan di dalamnya satu maksud yang jahat. Maka, dengan kesadaran, bahwa kamu telah selalu mendengar ayat dibacakan dan dipimpin langsung pula oleh Rasul, kamu akan selamat. Sebab, ayat-ayat Allah dan Rasul adalah pedoman hidupmu. “Dan banangsiapa yang berpegang teguh kepada Allah, maka sesungguhnya telah dibeii petunjuk dia kepada jalan yang Iwius." (ujung ayat 101) Ayat-ayat yang dibacakan adalah datang dari Allah, dan Rasul yang ada di antara kamu, ialah utusan Allah. Jika keduanya ini kamu pegang teguh, berarti kamu telah berpegang pada Allah sendiri. Bila kamu telah berpegang teguh kepada Allah, kamu tidak akan tersesat lagi. Dan jalan Allah adalah jalan yang lurus. Allah akan memberimu petunjuk dengan ayat-ayat yang dibaca itu dan Rasul yang diutus itu, sehingga jalanmu tidak akan terpesong kepada kesesatan. “Wahai orang-orang yang beriman! Takwalah kamu dengan Allah sebenar-benar takwa." (pangkal ayat 102) Ayat-ayat sudah dibacakan kepada kamu dan Rasul pun ada hidup di antara kamu dan kamu pun telah beriman, telah percaya bahwa Allah itu memang ada. Dialah yang memberikan nikmat kurnia kepada kamu. Oleh sebab itu, janganlah kamu cukupkan kepada Allah itu hanya sekadar tahu dan percaya akan ada-Nya. Hendaklah lebih dari itu; yaitu terasa hubungan yang erat dengan Dia. Erat, seerat-eratnya, sehingga Allah jangan hanya semata-mata terpikir oleh otak, melainkan terasa dalam jiwa. Jangan sampai terputus hubungan dengan Dia, melainkan dipelihara terus-menerus. Itulah yang dinamai takwa. Dengan takwa, maka iman yang telah ada itu dipupuk. Kepercayaan akan adanya Allah lalu membentuk hidup pribadi; sebagaimana yang terlebih dahulu di dalam ayat 79 dalam surah ini juga, kamu menjadi rabbani, menjadi keluarga Allah. Orang yang memegang takwa dengan sebenar-benar takwa, terpeliharalah tujuan hidupnya. Sebab, arti takwa itu sendiri ialah pemeliharaan. “Dan janganlah kamu mati, melainkan dalam keadaan Muslimin." (ujung ayat 102) Pegang teguh takwa itu sampai mati dan mati tetap dalam Islam. Sekali telah datang ke dunia, maka jiwa telah terisi dengan kepercayaan kepada Allah dan berbakti (takwa) kepada Allah. Dengan demikian jiwa menjadi kebal dan besar. Apabila pendirian hidup dan pandangan hidup ini telah dibentuk dalam jiwa, kamu tidak akan dapat dipermain-mainkan orang lagi. Tempatmu berlindung hanya Allah, pedoman hidupmu adalah Ai-Qur'an, pemimpin yang sejati hanya Muhammad ﷺ Walaupun seluruh dunia menantangmu, membujuk rayumu, mencoba mengutak-atikkan kamu, mereka pasti akan gagal. “Dan berpegang teguhlah kamu sekalian pada … Allah." (pangkal ayat 103) Apa yang disebut sebagai tali Allah sudah terang pada ayat di atas tadi, ialah ayat Allah yang dibacakan kepada kamu, tegasnya Al-Qur'an. Berjalin berkelindan dengan Rasul yang ada di antara kamu. Yaitu Sunnahnya dan contoh bimbingan yang diberikannya. Di ayat ini ditegaskan, bahwa berpegang pada tali Allah itu ialah “kamu sekalian." Artinya telah bersatu padu. Karena kalau pegangan semuanya sudah satu, maka dirimu yang terpecah-belah itu sendirinya pun menjadi satu. Lalu dikuatkan lagi dengan lanjutan ayat, “Dan janganlah kamu bercerai-berai." Di sini tampak pentingnya jamaah. Berpegang pada tali Allah sendiri-sendiri tidaklah ada faedahnya. Kalau tidak ada persatuan antara satu dengan yang lain. Di sinilah kepentingan kesatuan komando, kesatuan pimpinan. Pimpinan tertinggi ialah Rasul ﷺ Dengan ajaran yang demikian, kebanggaan kabilah tidak ada lagi. Tidak ada kemuliaan Arab atas Ajam, atau kulit putih atas kulit hitam, sebab ayat yang terdahulu telah menyebutkan kepastian takwa. Maka, yang lebih mulia di sisi Allah ialah siapa yang lebih takwa kepada-Nya. Dengan sebab persamaan karena takwa ini, timbullah kekuatan yang besar dan barulah keadaan dan mulialah tujuan. Lalu datang lanjutan ayat, “Dan ingatlah olehmu nikmat Allah atas kamu; seketika kamu sedang ber-musuh-musuhan telah dijinakkan-Nya antara hati kamu masing-masing." Itulah satu nikmat paling besar. Sebab, perpecahan, permusuhan, dan berbenci-bencian adalah sengketa dan kutuk yang sangat menghabiskan tenaga jiwa. Sebelum datang ajaran Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, suku dan suku berkelahi. Antara Aus dan Khazraj di Madinah; antara Bani Abdi Manaf dan Bani Hasyim di Mekah; antara orang kota dan orang gunung dan padang pasir, semuanya itu bermusuhan, berbenci-bencian, berlomba memperebutkan kebanggaan dan kemegahan duniawi yang tidak berarti. Sekarang setelah ajaran Allah datang dengan perantaraan Rasul, timbullah nikmat persatuan antara kamu “Sehingga dengan nikmat Allah kamu menjadi bersaudara" Apakah nikmat yang paling besar daripada persau-daraan sesudah permusuhan? Itulah nikmat yang lebih besar daripada emas dan perak. Sebab, nikmat persaudaraan adalah nikmat dalam jiwa. Dengan persaudaraan yang berat dapat sama dipikul, yang ringan dapat sama dijinjing. “Padahal kamu dahulu telah di pinggir lubang neraka" Artinya, neraka perpecahan, neraka kutuk-mengutuk, benci-membenci, sampai berperang bunuh-membunuh. Timbul dendam suku, sakit hati kabilah. Yang satu ingin memusnahkan yang lain. Berkali-kali terjadi peperangan dalam zaman jahiliyyah dan kalau berkelanjutan, kamu akan musnah karena berkelahi sesama sendiri. “Namun, kamu telah diselamatkan-Nya daripadanya." Dibangkitkan Allah kamu dari dalam neraka jiwa itu, ditariknya tangan kamu, sehingga tidak jadi jatuh, yaitu dengan kedatangan Nabi Muhammad ﷺ Maka, sekarang dengan kedatangan Nabi Muhammad ini, jahiliyyah tidak ada lagi; yang ada sekarang ialah Islamiyah. Permusuhan karena suku tidak ada lagi; yang ada sekarang hanyalah persatuan karena iman. Dan kalau berperang bukan lagi sesama umat yang beriman, melainkan berperang terhadap orang-orang yang memusuhi Allah. Akhirnya, Allah berfirman di ujung ayat, “Demikianlah Allah menyatakan tanda-tanda-Nya kepada kamu, supaya kamu mendapat petunjuk." (ujung ayat 103) Maka semua anjuran yang tersebut di atas itu disebutkan sebagai tanda-tanda (ayat-ayat) atau kesaksian tentang kekuasaan Allah, tentang peraturan dan Sunnah Allah di dalam alam ini. Bahwasanya persatuan dari manusia yang sepaham bisa menimbulkan kekuatan yang besar, ke dalam pribadi Allah. Maulana Muhammad Iqbal pernah mengemukakan kesan filsafat tentang pembangunan pribadi insani masing-masing. Setiap orang mengisi pribadinya dengan takwa. Lalu setiap orang yang bertakwa itu meleburkan dirinya kepada pribadi yang besar, ke dalam pribadi Allah. Antara satu pribadi dengan pribadi yang lain tergabung jadi satu, karena kesatuan kepercayaan dan mereka pun jadi satu tujuan dalam kesatuan arah tujuan, yaitu Allah. Di dunia mereka beroleh bahagia dengan kemenangan, sehingga dapat melaksanakan tugas suci, yaitu menjadi Khalifatullah di muka bumi. Maka, tercapailah maksud itu, sehingga pernahlah satu ketika kekuasaan Islam sebagai umat tauhid itu, sebelah kakinya menancap di Delhi Industan dan sebelah kakinya lagi menancap di Andalusia, Semenanjung Iberia. Dan ini pun akan tercapai kembali bila kita kembali kepada ajaran-ajaran ayat ini. in syaa Allah.
