ٱلْبَقَرَة : ٣٤

  • وَإِذۡ And when
  • قُلۡنَا We said
  • لِلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ to the angels
  • ٱسۡجُدُواْ Prostrate
  • لِأٓدَمَ to Adam
  • فَسَجَدُوٓاْ [so] they prostrated
  • إِلَّآ except
  • إِبۡلِيسَ Iblees
  • أَبَىٰ He refused
  • وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ and was arrogant
  • وَكَانَ and became
  • مِنَ of
  • ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ the disbelievers
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees.1 He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.
Footnotes
1 - The proper name of Satan, who was not an angel but from the jinn, as stated in 18:50. Done in obedience to Allāh, this prostration was one of respect, not worship.
And, mention, when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate yourselves to Adam', a prostration that is a bow of salutation; so they prostrated themselves, except Iblees, the father of the jinn, who was among the angels, he refused, to prostrate, and disdained, became proud and said, I am better than he [Q. 7:12]; and so he became one of the disbelievers, according to God's knowledge.
