ٱلْبَقَرَة ٢٧٦
- يَمۡحَقُ Destroys
- ٱللَّهُ Allah
- ٱلرِّبَوٰاْ the usury
- وَيُرۡبِي and (gives) increase
- ٱلصَّدَقَٰتِۗ (for) the charities
- وَٱللَّهُ And Allah
- لَا (does) not
- يُحِبُّ love
- كُلَّ every
- كَفَّارٍ ungrateful
- أَثِيمٍ sinner
Allāh destroys interest and gives increase for charities. And Allāh does not like every sinning disbeliever.
God effaces usury, diminishing it and eliminating any blessing in it, but He augments voluntary almsgivings with interest, increasing them, making them grow and multiplying their reward. God loves not, that is to say, He will requite, any guilty, profligate devouring it, ingrate, who deems usury licit.
"The Punishment for Dealing with Riba (Interest and Usury)
After Allah mentioned the righteous believers who give charity, pay Zakah and spend on their relatives and families at various times and conditions, He then mentioned those who deal in usury and illegally acquire people's money, using various evil methods and wicked ways.
Allah describes the condition of these people when they are resurrected from their graves and brought back to life on the Day of Resurrection:
الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ الرِّبَا لَا يَقُومُونَ إِلاَّ كَمَا يَقُومُ الَّذِي يَتَخَبَّطُهُ الشَّيْطَانُ مِنَ الْمَسِّ
Those who eat Riba will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaytan leading him to insanity.
This Ayah means, on the Day of Resurrection, these people will get up from their graves just as the person afflicted by insanity or possessed by a demon would.
Ibn Abbas said,
""On the Day of Resurrection, those who consume Riba will be resurrected while insane and suffering from seizures.""
Ibn Abi Hatim also recorded this and then commented,
""This Tafsir was reported from Awf bin Malik, Sa`id bin Jubayr, As-Suddi, Ar-Rabi bin Anas, Qatadah and Muqatil bin Hayyan.""
Al-Bukhari recorded that Samurah bin Jundub said in the long Hadith about the dream that the Prophet had,
فَأَتْينَا عَلَى نَهْرٍ حَسِبْتُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ أَحْمَرَ مِثْلَ الدَّمِ وَإِذَا فِي النَّهْرِ رَجُلٌ سَابِحٌ يَسْبَحُ وَإِذَا عَلَى شَطِّ النَّهْرِ رَجُلٌ قَدْ جَمَعَ عِنْدَهُ حِجَارَةً كَثِيرَةً وَإِذَا ذَلِكَ السَّابِحُ يَسْبَحُ مَا يَسْبَحُ ثُمَّ يَأْتِي ذَلِكَ الَّذِي قَدْ جَمَعَ الْحِجَارَةَ عِنْدَهُ فَيَفْغَرُ لَهُ فَاهُ فَيُلْقِمُهُ حَجَرًا
We reached a river -
the narrator said, ""I thought he said that the river was as red as blood""-
and found that a man was swimming in the river, and on its bank there was another man standing with a large collection of stones next to him. The man in the river would swim, then come to the man who had collected the stones and open his mouth, and the other man would throw a stone in his mouth.
The explanation of this dream was that the person in the river was one who consumed Riba.
Allah's statement,
ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَالُواْ إِنَّمَا الْبَيْعُ مِثْلُ الرِّبَا وَأَحَلَّ اللّهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا
That is because they say:""Trading is only like Riba,"" whereas Allah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba,
indicates that the disbelievers claimed that Riba was allowed due to the fact that they rejected Allah's commandments, not that they equated Riba with regular trade.
The disbelievers did not recognize that Allah allowed trade in the Qur'an, for if they did, they would have said, ""Riba is trade."" Rather, they said,
إِنَّمَا الْبَيْعُ مِثْلُ الرِّبَا
(Trading is only like Riba) meaning, they are similar, so why did Allah allow this, but did not allow that, they asked in defiance of Allah's commandments.
Allah's statement,
وَأَحَلَّ اللّهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا
Whereas Allah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba,
might be a continuation of the answer to the disbelievers' claim, who uttered it, although they knew that Allah decided that ruling on trade is different from that of Riba.
Indeed, Allah is the Most Knowledgeable, Most Wise, Whose decision is never resisted. Allah is never asked about what He does, while they will be asked. He is knowledgeable of the true reality of all things and the benefits they carry. He knows what benefits His servants, so He allows it for them, and what harms them, so He forbids them from it. He is more merciful with them than the mother with her own infant.
Thereafter, Allah said,
فَمَن جَاءهُ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ فَانتَهَىَ فَلَهُ مَا سَلَفَ وَأَمْرُهُ إِلَى اللّهِ
So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Riba, shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allah (to judge),
meaning, those who have knowledge that Allah made usury unlawful, and refrain from indulging in it as soon as they acquire this knowledge, then Allah will forgive their previous dealings in Riba,
عَفَا اللّهُ عَمَّا سَلَف
(Allah has forgiven what is past). (5:95)
On the day Makkah was conquered the Prophet said,
وَكُلُّ رِبًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ مَوْضُوعٌ تَحْتَ قَدَمَيَ هَاتَيْنِ وَأَوَّلُ رِبًا أَضَعُ رِبَا الْعَبَّاس
All cases of Riba during the time of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period of ignorance) is annulled and under my feet, and the first Riba I annul is the Riba of Al-Abbas (the Prophet's uncle).
We should mention that;
the Prophet did not require the return of the interest that they gained on their Riba during the time of Jahiliyyah. Rather, he pardoned the cases of Riba that occurred in the past, just as Allah said,
فَلَهُ مَا سَلَفَ وَأَمْرُهُ إِلَى اللّهِ
(shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allah (to judge).
Sa`id bin Jubayr and As-Suddi said that,
فَلَهُ مَا سَلَفَ
(shall not be punished for the past),
refers to the Riba one consumed before it was prohibited.
Allah then said,
وَمَنْ عَادَ
But whoever returns,
meaning, deals in Riba after gaining knowledge that Allah prohibited it, then that warrants punishment, and in this case, the proof will have been established against such person.
This is why Allah said,
فَأُوْلَـيِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ
such are the dwellers of the Fire ـ they will abide therein forever.
Abu Dawud recorded that Jabir said,
""When
الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ الرِّبَا لَا يَقُومُونَ إِلاَّ كَمَا يَقُومُ الَّذِي يَتَخَبَّطُهُ الشَّيْطَانُ مِنَ الْمَسِّ
(Those who eat Riba will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like a person beaten by Shaytan leading him to insanity) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah said,
مَنْ لَمْ يَذَرِ الْمُخَابَرَةَ فَلْيُوْذِنْ بِحَرْبٍ مِنَ اللهِ وَرَسُولِه
Whoever does not refrain from Mukhabarah, then let him receive a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger.""
Al-Hakim also recorded this in his Mustadrak, and he said,
""It is Sahih according to the criteria of Muslim, and he did not record it.""
Mukhabarah (sharecropping), farming land in return for some of its produce, was prohibited.
Muzabanah, trading fresh dates still on trees with dried dates already on the ground, was prohibited.
Muhaqalah, which refers to trading produce not yet harvested, with crops already harvested, was also prohibited.
These were prohibited to eradicate the possibility that Riba might be involved, for the quality and equity of such items are only known after they become dry.
The subject of Riba is a difficult subject for many scholars. We should mention that the Leader of the Faithful, Umar bin Al-Khattab, said,
""I wished that the Messenger of Allah had made three matters clearer for us, so that we could refer to his decision:
the grandfather (regarding inheriting from his grandchildren),
the Kalalah (those who leave neither descendants nor ascendants as heirs) and
some types of Riba.""
Umar was referring to the types of transactions where it is not clear whether they involve Riba or not.
The Shariah supports the rule that;
for any matter that is unlawful, then the means to it are also unlawful, because whatever results in the unlawful is unlawful, in the same way that whenever an obligation will not be complete except with something, then that something is itself an obligation.
The Two Sahihs recorded that An-Nu`man bin Bashir said that he heard the Messenger of Allah say,
إِنَّ الْحَلَلَ بَيِّنٌ وَإِنَّ الْحَرَامَ بَيِّنٌ وَبَيْنَ ذَلِكَ أُمُورٌ مُشْتَبِهَاتٌ فَمَنِ اتَّقَى الشُّبُهَاتِ اسْتَبْرَأَ لِدِينِهِ وَعِرْضِهِ وَمَنْ وَقَعَ فِي الشُّبُهَاتِ وَقَعَ فِي الْحَرَامِ كَالرَّاعِي يَرْعَى حَولَ الْحِمَى يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَرْتَعَ فِيه
Both lawful and unlawful things are evident, but in between them there are matters that are not clear. So whoever saves himself from these unclear matters, he saves his religion and his honor. And whoever indulges in these unclear matters, he will have fallen into the prohibitions, just like a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near a private pasture, at any moment he is liable to enter it.
The Sunan records that Al-Hasan bin Ali said that he heard the Messenger of Allah say,
دَعْ مَا يَرِيبُكَ إِلَى مَا لَا يَرِيبُك
Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.
Ahmad recorded that Sa`id bin Al-Musayyib said that Umar said,
""The Ayah about Riba was one of the last Ayat to be revealed, and the Messenger of Allah died before he explained it to us. So leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.""
Ibn Majah recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,
الرِّبَا سَبْعُونَ حُوبًا أَيْسَرُهَا أَنْ يَنْكِحَ الرَّجُلُ أُمَّه
Riba is seventy types, the least of which is equal to one having sexual intercourse with his mother.
Continuing on the subject of prohibiting the means that lead to the unlawful, there is a Hadith that Ahmad recorded in which Aishah said,
""When the Ayat in Surah Al-Baqarah about Riba were revealed, the Messenger of Allah went out to the Masjid and recited them and also prohibited trading in alcohol.""
The Six collections recorded this Hadith, with the exception of At-Tirmidhi.
The Two Sahihs recorded that the Messenger of Allah said,
لَعَنَ اللهُ الْيَهُودَ حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّحُومُ فَجَمَلُوهَا فَبَاعُوهَا وَأَكَلُوا أَثْمَانَهَا
May Allah curse the Jews! Allah forbade them to eat animal fat, but they melted it and sold it, eating its price.
Ali and Ibn Mas`ud narrated that the Messenger of Allah said,
لَعَنَ اللهُ اكِلَ الرِّبَا وَمُوكِلَهُ وَشَاهِدَيْهِ وَكَاتِبَه
May Allah curse whoever consumes Riba, whoever pays Riba, the two who are witnesses to it, and the scribe who records it.
They say they only have witnesses and a scribe to write the Riba contract when they want it to appear to be a legitimate agreement, but it is still invalid because the ruling is applied to the agreement itself, not the form that it appears in. Verily, deeds are judged by their intentions.
Allah Does Not Bless Riba
Allah says;
يَمْحَقُ اللّهُ الْرِّبَا وَيُرْبِي الصَّدَقَاتِ
Allah will destroy Riba and will give increase for Sadaqat.
Allah states that He destroys Riba, either by removing this money from those who eat it, or by depriving them of the blessing, and thus the benefit of their money.
Because of their Riba, Allah will torment them in this life and punish them for it on the Day of Resurrection.
Allah said,
قُل لاَّ يَسْتَوِى الْخَبِيثُ وَالطَّيِّبُ وَلَوْ أَعْجَبَكَ كَثْرَةُ الْخَبِيثِ
Say:""Not equal are Al-Khabith (evil things) and At-Tayyib (good things), even though the abundance of Al-Khabith may please you."" (5:100)
وَيَجْعَلَ الْخَبِيثَ بَعْضَهُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ فَيَرْكُمَهُ جَمِيعاً فَيَجْعَلَهُ فِى جَهَنَّمَ
And put the wicked (disbelievers and doers of evil deeds) one over another, heap them together and cast them into Hell. (8:37)
and,
وَمَأ ءَاتَيْتُمْ مِّن رِّباً لِّيَرْبُوَاْ فِى أَمْوَالِ النَّاسِ فَلَ يَرْبُواْ عِندَ اللَّهِ
And that which you give in gift (to others), in order that it may increase (your wealth by expecting to get a better one in return) from other people's property, has no increase with Allah. (30:39)
Ibn Jarir said that Allah's statement,
يَمْحَقُ اللّهُ الْرِّبَا
(Allah will destroy Riba), is similar to the statement reported of Abdullah bin Mas`ud,
""Riba will end up with less, even if it was substantial.""
Imam Ahmad recorded a similar statement in Al-Musnad.
Allah Increases Charity, Just as One Raises His Animal
Allah's statement,
وَيُرْبِي الصَّدَقَاتِ
And will give increase for Sadaqat,
means, Allah makes charity grow, or He increases it.
Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,
مَنْ تَصَدَّقَ بِعَدْلِ تَمْرَةٍ مِنْ كَسْبٍ طَيِّبٍ وَلَا يَقْبَلُ اللهُ إِلاَّ الطَّيِّبَ فَإِنَّ اللهَ يَتَقَبَّلُهَا بِيَمِينِهِ ثُمَّ يُرَبِّيهَا لِصَاحِبِهِ كَمَا يُرَبِّي أَحَدُكُمْ فَلُوَّهُ حَتَّى تَكُونَ مِثْلَ الْجَبَل
Whoever gives in charity what equals a date from honest resources, and Allah only accepts that which is good and pure, then Allah accepts it with His right (Hand) and raises it for its giver, just as one of you raises his animal, until it becomes as big as a mountain.
This was recorded in the book of Zakah.
Allah Does not Like the Disbelieving Sinners
Allah's statement,
وَاللّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ أَثِيمٍ
And Allah likes not the disbelievers, sinners.
indicates that Allah does not like he who has a disbelieving heart, who is a sinner in tongue and action.
There is a connection between the beginning of the Ayah on Riba and what Allah ended it with.
Those who consume Riba are not satisfied with the permissible and pure resources that Allah provided them. Instead, they try to illegally acquire people's money by relying on evil methods. This demonstrates their lack of appreciation for the bounty that Allah provides.
Praising Those Who Thank Allah
Allah praised those who believe in His Lordship, obey His commands, thank Him and appreciate Him. They are those who are kind to His creation, establish prayer and give charity due on their money. Allah informed them of the honor that He has prepared for them and that they will be safe from the repercussions of the Day of Resurrection.
Allah said,
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ امَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّالِحَاتِ وَأَقَامُواْ الصَّلَةَ وَاتَوُاْ الزَّكَاةَ لَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
Truly, those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and perform the Salah and give Zakah, they will have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.
The Necessity of Taqwa and Avoiding Riba
Allah commands His believing servants to fear Him and warns them against what would bring them closer to His anger and drive them away from His pleasure.
Allah said,
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ امَنُواْ اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ
O you who believe! Have Taqwa of Allah,
meaning, fear Him and remember that He is watching all that you do.
وَذَرُواْ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الرِّبَا
And give up what remains of Riba,
meaning, abandon the Riba that people still owe you upon hearing this warning,
إِن كُنتُم مُّوْمِنِينَ
if you indeed have been believers.
believing in the trade that He allowed you and the prohibition of Riba.
Zayd bin Aslam, Ibn Jurayj, Muqatil bin Hayyan and As-Suddi said that;
this Ayah was revealed about Bani Amr bin Umayr, a sub-tribe of Thaqif, and Bani Al-Mughirah, from the tribe of Bani Makhzum, between whom were outstanding transactions of Riba leftover from time of Jahiliyyah. When Islam came and both tribes became Muslims, Thaqif required Bani Al-Mughirah to pay the Riba of that transaction, but Bani Al-Mughirah said, ""We do not pay Riba in Islam.""
Attab bin Usayd, the Prophet's deputy on Makkah, wrote to the Messenger of Allah about this matter. This Ayah was then revealed and the Messenger of Allah conveyed it to Attab.
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ امَنُواْ اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ وَذَرُواْ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الرِّبَا إِن كُنتُم مُّوْمِنِينَ
فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُواْ فَأْذَنُواْ بِحَرْبٍ مِّنَ اللّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ
O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah and give up what remains (due to you) from Riba (from now onward), if you are (really) believers. And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger.
They said, ""We repent to Allah and abandon whatever is left of our Riba"", and they all abandoned it.
This Ayah serves as a stern threat to those who continue to deal in Riba after Allah revealed this warning.
Riba Constitutes War Against Allah and His Messenger
Ibn Jurayj said that Ibn Abbas said that,
فَأْذَنُواْ بِحَرْبٍ
(then take a notice of war) means,
""Be sure of a war from Allah and His Messenger.""
He also said,
""On the Day of Resurrection, those who eat Riba will be told, `take up arms for war.""'
He then recited,
فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُواْ فَأْذَنُواْ بِحَرْبٍ مِّنَ اللّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ
(And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger).
Ali bin Abi Talhah said that Ibn Abbas said about,
فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُواْ فَأْذَنُواْ بِحَرْبٍ مِّنَ اللّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ
(And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger),
""Whoever kept dealing with Riba and did not refrain from it, then the Muslim Leader should require him to repent. If he still did not refrain from Riba, the Muslim Leader should cut off his head.""
Allah then said,
وَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَلَكُمْ رُوُوسُ أَمْوَالِكُمْ لَا تَظْلِمُونَ
But if you repent, you shall have your capital sums. Deal not unjustly,
by taking the Riba,
وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ
And you shall not be dealt with unjustly.
meaning, your original capital will not diminish. Rather, you will receive only what you lent without increase or decrease.
Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Amr bin Al-Ahwas said,
""The Messenger of Allah gave a speech during the Farewell Hajj saying;
أَلَا إِنَّ كُلَّ رِبًا كَانَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ مَوْضُوعٌ عَنْكُمْ كُلُّهُ لَكُمْ رُوُوسُ أَمْوَالِكُم لَا تَظْلِمُونَ وَلَاتُظْلَمُونَ وَأَوَّلُ رِبًا مَوْضُوعٍ رِبَا الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِالْمُطَّلِبِ مَوْضُوعٌ كُلُّه
Verily, every case of Riba from the Jahiliyyah is completely annulled. You will only take back your capital, without increase or decrease. The first Riba that I annul is the Riba of Al-Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib, all of it is annulled.
Being Kind to Debtors Who Face Financial Difficulties
Allah said,
وَإِن كَانَ ذُو عُسْرَةٍ فَنَظِرَةٌ إِلَى مَيْسَرَةٍ وَأَن تَصَدَّقُواْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
And if the debtor is having a hard time, then grant him time till it is easy for him to repay; but if you remit it by way of charity, that is better for you if you did but know.
Allah commands creditors to be patient with debtors who are having a hard time financially,
وَإِن كَانَ ذُو عُسْرَةٍ فَنَظِرَةٌ إِلَى مَيْسَرَةٍ
(And if the debtor is having a hard time (has no money), then grant him time till it is easy for him to repay).
During the time of Jahiliyyah, when the debt came to term, the creditor would say to the debtor, ""Either pay now or interest will be added to the debt.""
Allah encouraged creditors to give debtors respite regarding their debts and promised all that is good, and a great reward from Him for this righteous deed,
وَأَن تَصَدَّقُواْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
(But if you remit it by way of charity, that is better for you if you did but know),
meaning, if you forfeit your debts and cancel them completely.
Imam Ahmad recorded that Sulayman bin Buraydah said that his father said,
""I heard the Messenger of Allah say,
مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا فَلَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِثْلُهُ صَدَقَة
Whoever gives time to a debtor facing hard times, will gain charity of equal proportions for each day he gives.
I also heard the Prophet say,
مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا فَلَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِثْلُهُ صَدَقَة
Whoever gives time to a debtor facing hard times, will earn charity multiplied two times for each day he gives.
I said, `O Messenger of Allah! I heard you say, `Whoever gives time to a debtor facing hard times, will gain charity of equal proportions for each day he gives.'
I also heard you say, `Whoever gives time to a debtor facing hard times, will earn charity multiplied by two times for each day he gives.'
He said,
لَهُ بِكُلِّ يَومٍ مِثْلُهُ صَدَقَةٌ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَحِلَّ الدَّيْنُ فَإِذَا حَلَّ الدَّيْنُ فَأَنْظَرَهُ فَلَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِثْلَهُ صَدَقَة
He will earn charity of equal proportions for each day (he gives time) before the term of the debt comes to an end, and when the term comes to an end, he will again acquire charity multiplied by two times for each day if he gives more time.""
Ahmad recorded that Muhammad bin Ka`b Al-Qurazi said that;
Abu Qatadah had a debt on a man, who used to hide from Abu Qatadah when he looked for him to pay what he owed him. One day, Abu Qatadah came looking for the debtor and a young boy came out, and he asked him about the debtor and found out that he was in the house eating.
Abu Qatadah said in a loud voice, ""O Fellow! Come out, for I was told that you are in the house.""
The man came out and Abu Qatadah asked him, ""Why are you hiding from me?""
The man said, ""I am having a hard time financially, and I do not have any money.""
Abu Qatadah said, ""By Allah, are you truly facing a hard time?""
He said, ""Yes.""
Abu Qatadah cried and said, ""I heard the Messenger of Allah say,
مَنْ نَفَّسَ عَنْ غَرِيمِهِ أَوْ مَحَا عَنْهُ كَانَ فِي ظِلِّ الْعَرْشِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَة
Whoever gives time to his debtor, or forgives the debt, will be in the shade of the Throne (of Allah) on the Day of Resurrection.""
Muslim also recorded this Hadith in his Sahih.
Al-Hafiz Abu Ya`la Al-Mawsili recorded that Hudhayfah said that the Messenger of Allah said,
أُتِيَ اللهُ بِعَبْدٍمِنْ عَبِيدِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قَالَ مَاذَا عَمِلْتَ لِي فِي الدُّنْيَا
On the Day of Resurrection, one of Allah's servants will be summoned before Him and He will ask him, ""What deeds did you perform for Me in your life?""
فَقَالَ مَا عَمِلْتُ لَكَ يَا رَبِّ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ فِي الدُّنْيَا أَرْجُوكَ بِهَا قَالَهَا ثَلَثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَ الْعَبْدُعِنْدَ اخِرِهَا يَا رَبِّ إِنَّكَ كُنْتَ أَعْطَيْتَنِي فَضْلَ مَالٍ وَكُنْتُ رَجُلً أُبَايِعُ النَّاسَ وَكَانَ مِنْ خُلُقِي الْجَوازُ فَكُنْتُ أُيَسِّرُ عَلَى الْمُوسِرِ وَأُنْظِرُ الْمُعْسِرَ
He will say, ""O Lord! In my life, I have not performed a deed for Your sake that equals an atom,"" three times.
The third time, the servant will add, ""O Lord! You granted me wealth and I used to be a merchant. I used to be lenient, giving easy terms to those well-off and giving time to the debtors who faced hard times.""
فَيَقُولُ اللهُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ أَنَا أَحَقُّ مَنْ يُيَسِّرُ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّة
Allah will say, ""I Am the Most Worthy of giving easy terms. Therefore, enter Paradise.""
Al-Bukhari, Muslim and Ibn Majah also recorded this Hadith from Hudhayfah, and Muslim recorded a similar wording from Uqbah bin Amir and Abu Mas`ud Al-Badri.
Allah further advised His servants, by reminding them that this life will soon end and all the wealth in it will vanish. He also reminded them that the Hereafter will surely come, when the Return to Him will occur, and that He will hold His creation accountable for what they did, rewarding them or punishing them accordingly.
Allah also warned them against His torment,
وَاتَّقُواْ يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى اللّهِ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّى كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ
And have Taqwa for the Day when you shall be brought back to Allah. Then every person shall be paid what he earned, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly.
It was reported that;
this was the last Ayah revealed from the Glorious Qur'an.
An-Nasa'i recorded that Ibn Abbas said,
""The last Ayah to be revealed from the Qur'an was,
وَاتَّقُواْ يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى اللّهِ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّى كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ

Sayings Of The Holy Prophet ﷺ
About ربا riba or Interest:
عن النبی ﷺ قال : اجتنبوا السبع المبقات ، قالوا (سَٔلوا): یا رسول اللہ ﷺ ! قال : اَلشِّرک والسحر، وقتل النفس التی حرم اللہ الا بالحق ، واکل الربوا ، واکل مال الیتیم والتولی یوم الزحف ، وقذف المحصنات الغافلات (رواہ البخاری و مسلم و ابوداؤد والنسای)
"Abstain from the seven disasters." The people asked him: "What are they, 0 Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "To ascribe partners to Allah, to practice sorcery, to unjustly kill one whom Allah has declared inviolable, to take ربا riba (interest or usury), to exploit the property of an orphan, to escape at the time of war and to slander the chaste women who are believers, unwary."
قال النبی ﷺ : رءیت اللیلۃ رجلین آتیانی ، فاَخرجانی إلی ارض مقدسۃ فانطلقنا حتی اتینا علی نھر من دم فیہ رجل قایٔم و علی شط النھر رجل بین یدیہ حجارۃ، فأقبل الرجل الذی فی النھر، فاذا اراد ان یخرج رمی الرجل بحجر فی فیہ، فردہ ، حیث کان ، فجعل کلما جاء لیخرج رمی فی فیہ بحجر، فیرجع کما کان، فقلت : ماھذا الذی رأیتہ فی النھر ؟ قال : اکل الربا (رواہ البخاری، ھذا فی البیوع مختصراً )
This night I ﷺ two men who came to me and brought me to a sacred land. We walked until we reached a river of blood, wherein a man was standing, and another man was standing on the bank of the river with some stones before him. Then the man who was standing in the river came forward, and when he intended to come out of the river, the other man threw a stone at his mouth, and turned him back to the place where he was earlier - thus he began to do the same with him whenever he tried to come out of the river by throwing a stone at him and turning him back. I asked him, "What is that which I have just seen going on?" He replied, "He is the one who used to take ربا riba (interest or usury).
لعن الرسول اللہ ﷺ اکل الربا موکلہ و کاتبۃ، و شاھدیۃ، و قال : ھم سواء (رواہ مسلم وغیرہ)
The Messenger of Allah cursed the one who accepts ربا riba (interest or usury), the one who pays it, the one who writes it and the persons who gives witness to it, and said, "They are all alike."
عن النبی ﷺ قال : اَربع حق علی اللہ ان لا یدخلھم الجنۃ ولا یذیقھم نعیمھا : مد من الخمر، و اکل الربا و اکل مال الیتیم بغیر حق، والعاق لوالدیہ (رواہ الحاکم)
There are four kinds of people about whom Allah has decided not to admit them to Paradise and not to let them taste its bliss: The one who is addicted to wine, the one who takes the ربا riba , the one who exploits the property of an orphan and the man who is disobedient to his parents.mmmm18
عن رسول اللہ ﷺ قال : الدرھم یصیبہ الرجل من الربا اعظم عنداللہ من ثلاثۃ وثلثین زنبۃ یزنیھا فی اسلام (رواہ الطبرانی)
A dirham a man receives as ربا riba (interest or usury) is, in the sight of Allah, more serious than thirty three acts of fornication or adultery in Islam.
عن ابن عباس ؓ قال : نھی رسول اللہ ﷺ اَن تشتری الثمرہ حتی تطعم وقال : اِذا ظھرالزنا والربافی قریۃ فقد احلوا باَنفسھم عذاب اللہ (رواہ الحاکم)
The Holy Prophet ﷺ has forbidden the fruits to be sold or purchased before they are eatable, and said, "When zinc (adultery) and ربا riba (usury or interest) become rampant in the people of a town they themselves invite the punishment of Allah.
ما من قوم یظھر الربا الا اخذ وا بالسنۃ ، وما من قوم یظھر فیھم الرشاء الااخذ وا بالرعب (رواہ احمد)
The society in which ربا riba becomes rampant is punished with famine, and the society where bribe is rampant is punished with horror (of others).
قال رسول اللہ ﷺ : رایت لیلۃ أسری بی لما انتھینا الی السماء السابعہ فنظرت فوقی ، فاذا اَنا برعد و بروق و صواعق، قال فأتیت علی قوم بطونھم کالبیوت فیھا الحیات تری من خارج بطونھم ، قلت : یا جبریل ! من ھؤلاء ؟ قال ھؤلاء اَکلۃ الربا (رواہ احمد)
On the night (of Ascension: Mi` raj) when we reached the seventh sky, I looked upwards and ﷺ thunder, lightning and thunder-claps. Then I came across some people whose stomachs seemed to be houses full of snakes - one could see them from the the outside of their stomachs. I asked Jibra'il: "Who are they?" He replied: "They are those who used to take ربا riba (interest or usury) ".
وروی عن عوف بن مالک ؓ قال : قالَ رسول اللہ ﷺ ایاک والذنوب التی لا تغفر، الغلول ، فمن غل شیٔا أتی بہ یوم القیامہ واکل الربا (الحدیث)
Abstain from sins which are not forgiven: Embezzling of the spoils, for whoever embezzles anything will come with it on the Day of Judgment, and the other sin is ربا riba.
عن انس ؓ عن النبی ﷺ قال : اِذا اَقرض الرجل الرجل فلا یاخذ ھدیۃ (مشکوٰۃ)
When a man gives a loan to a person he must not accept a gift (presented by the debtor).
To sum up, presented here were seven verses of the Holy Qur'an and ten sayings from the ahadith of the noble Prophet which concern the definition of ربا riba, and its nature, and point out to the disasters it brings in the world. This much is enough for a thinking and feeling Muslim. For those interested in a more comprehensive research on the subject and a more detailed discussion on the remaining aspects may see مسأیل السُود Mas'ala-i-sud, a separate book in Urdu on the problem of interest published by this humble writer.
In the second verse (276), it was said that Allah Almighty eradicates ربا riba and lets sadaqat (charities) grow. Here sadaqat were introduced with ربا riba by virtue of a unique congruity. It will be noted that there is contradiction in the very nature of ربا riba and صدقہ sadaqah, then their outcomes are also contradictory, and generally, those who engage in these two have contradictory intentions and objectives.
The contradiction in nature can be explained by the fact that in صدقہ sadaqah one gives to others what belongs to him without any reward or return, while in ربا riba, that which belongs to others is taken without any compensation or return. The intention and the objective of those who are engaged in these two activities is contradictory because one who gives صدقہ sadaqah, elects to lessen or exhaust what belongs to him exclusively for seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty and for earning merit in the Hereafter; while the ربا riba-taker is eager to collect impermissible increase on the capital he already has. That the outcome of both is contradictory is made clear by this verse which says that Allah Almighty erases the gains obtained through riba or takes away its barakah بَرَکَہ (blissful abundance); and increases the wealth, or its barakah بَرَکَہ for the giver of صدقہ sadaqah. The result is that the objective of the greedy in pursuit of wealth is not achieved, while one who spends in the way of Allah, and who was quite happy with a little decrease in his belongings, finds it full of Divine barakah بَرَکَہ whereby his wealth increases, or its end-products do, and their benefits accumulate.
At this point, it may be interesting to find out what is the meaning of erasing ربا riba and increasing صدقہ sadaqat in the verse. Some commentators have said that this erasing and increasing relates to the Hereafter where the ربا riba-consumer will find his wealth of no avail; it might as well become a curse for him; while those who are engaged in acts of صدقہ sadaqah and خیرات khayrat will find that their wealth has become a source of eternal blessings. This is absolutely obvious in which there is no doubt. However, according to the consensus of commentators, the position is that the erasing of ربا riba and the increasing of صدقہ sadaqah is most certainly related to the Hereafter, but some of its traces are observed in this world as well.
The money or property of which ربا riba becomes a part is sometimes destroyed taking with it all that was before it. This is a common sight in markets of ربا riba and stocks where millionaires and capitalists of yesterday become insolvents and paupers of today. No doubt, there are chances of profit and loss in ربا riba-free business activities and there are many businessmen who face losses in business deals but a loss that turns a millionaire into a beggar is witnessed only in riba markets and stock exchanges. There are so many statements of the experienced and the knowledgeable which say that the wealth collected through riba may increase faster and higher, but it generally does not survive long enough to run through children and their successors. In between, comes some calamity and effaces everything out. Sayyidna Ma'mar said that they have heard from their elders that forty years hardly pass on the riba-consumer when muhaq (major loss) overtakes his wealth.
May be, the wealth or property does not go to ruins outwardly, but this much is quite certain that its benefits, utilities, and blessings will go away. Since this is no secret that gold and silver are not desirable or useful as such. They cannot remove hunger or thirst. They cannot help beat the heat or serve as quilt and wrap in winter. Neither can they be used as clothes or utensils. The only purpose for which a wise person goes through thousands of exercises to procure and secure these can hardly be anything else except that gold and silver are means to procure things that go to make man's life pleasant and that he may live a life of comfort and self-respect. Then comes man°s natural wish that his children and relatives should also enjoy the same comfort and self-respect as he did.
These are the sort of things that can be called the benefits and utilities of wealth and property. As a result, we can safely say that one who procures these benefits and utilities has his wealth increased in a sense, even though it may appear to have decreased, and one who procures these benefits and utilities on a lower scale has his wealth decreased in a sense even though it may appear to have increased.
After having understood this, let us compare the two activities of ربا riba dealings and صدقہ sadaqah and خیرات khayrat. It will soon be noticed that the wealth of the ربا riba-consumer, no doubt, appears to be increasing, but that increase is akin to the swelling of the human body. The increase in swelling is after all an increase of the body itself. But no sane person would like to have this sort of increase because he knows that this increase is a certain knock of death. Similarly, no matter how increased is the wealth of the ربا riba-consumer, he remains, for ever, deprived of its fruits, that is, comfort and honour.
Perhaps, at this point, a doubt may bother someone in view of the comfort and status enjoyed by the ربا riba-consumers of today. Here they are with their mansions and villas, living in every luxury money can buy, attended by servants and maids, having the best to eat, drink and sleep - necessities and absurdities all rolled in one. A little thought here would lead every sane person to differentiate between the articles of comfort and comfort itself. There is a big difference between the two. The articles of comfort are made in factories and sold in markets. These can be procured against gold and silver, but that which is known as comfort, peace and bliss, is neither made in any factory nor sold in any market. This is mercy رحمہ (rahmah) which comes directly from Allah Almighty. There are occasions when this cannot be procured no matter how much one holds in his possession. Just think of the comfort of a sound sleep. In order to have it, we can certainly do our best - make a sleep-oriented house which is the best possible, perfect arrangement of air and light, cooling, heating, handsome looking furniture, the bed, the mattress, the pillows, all chosen ideally - but can we be sure that sleep will come just because all this helpful paraphernalia is there? If you have never personally experienced this, there are thousands who cannot sleep due to some disease, and who would say no. Reports from a country, so wealthy and 'civilized' as USA, reveal that seventy per cent people cannot sleep without sleeping pills. There are times when even these do not work. You can buy from stores things to make you sleep but you cannot buy sleep from any store at any price. Similar is the case of other articles of comfort and enjoyment. You can buy these articles against money but it is not necessary that you do experience comfort and enjoyment.
Again, after having understood this, if we look closely at what happens to the consumers of ربا riba, we shall find that they have everything in the world except what we know as real peace and comfort. So intoxicated they are in turning their ten million into fifteen and fifteen into twenty that they have no time to eat, or dress up, or be with their wives and children. There are factories to take care of. There are foreign ships to watch. Anxieties after anxieties chase them day and night. With them they sleep and with them they rise. How terrible of these crazy people who have confused comfort with articles of comfort, and therefore, they are far away from it.
This is a view of their so-called 'comfort'. Now let us think of their ideas of status, prestige and fair name. The fact is that such people become hard-hearted and merciless. Taking advantage of the poverty of the poor and the low income of the low-income people becomes their very occupation. Like parasites, they suck their blood to feed their own bodies. Since that is that, it is just not possible that people will ever respect them. Revealing are the accounts of the money-lenders of India and the Jews of Syria. If you see them as they are, you will find that their coffers are filled with gold and silver and precious stones yet they are given no respect in any group of human beings in any corner of the world. Moreover, the inevitable outcome of this cruel practice of theirs is that the poor start grudging and hating them, so much so that in the world of today most wars are an expression of this grudge and hate. It is the confrontation between labour and capital that introduced the ideologies of socialism and communism in the world. The subversive activities of communism are a result of this grudge and hate. The whole world has become a burning cauldron of killings and confrontations because of these. This much accounts for their personal comfort and social prestige. Experience bears out that ribs-earnings never make even the life of their children pleasant. Either the earnings go to waste or, because of its curse, they too, remain disgraced and deprived of the real fruits of wealth. People may perhaps be deceived by the example of the ribs-consumers of the West, wondering how rich they all are and how do their next and their next generations flourish. To this, I have already answered by presenting a brief outline of their so-called prosperity.
Here it can only be added that they really are like some man-eater who nurses his body by feeding on the blood of other human beings, and then a group of some such people go to live in a community of their own, and you take someone to that locality to show him how healthy and prosperous all of them happen to be. But an intelligent visitor who is interested in the welfare of humanity will never want to limit his visit to this locality alone; on the contrary, he would also want to see those localities where the blood of people has been sucked dry leaving them half dead. One who has seen the totality of such localities can never be happy with the locality of fat man-eaters. He can never say that this act of theirs is the way of human progress; on the contrary, he will have no option but to declare this as destruction of all that is human. Set against this is the case of those who give صدقہ sadaqah and خیرات khayrat. You will never find them running after money so anxiously. They may have lesser articles of comfort but they shall be found having more satisfaction and peace of heart, which is real comfort, as compared to those who have all those supporting articles. Consequently, they shall be looked at with respect and admiration by every human being of the world.
يَمْحَقُ اللَّـهُ الرِّبَا وَيُرْبِي الصَّدَقَاتِ
Allah destroys ربا riba and nourishes charities.
In short, the above statement of the verse is very clear in relation to the Hereafter. However, if we wish to understand, with a little effort, it is equally open in respect of this worldly life. This is what is meant by the hadith in which the Holy Prophet said:
ان الربو و اِن کثر فاِن عاقبتہ تصیر الی قل
No matter how much ربا riba increases, it will decrease ultimately. (Musnad Ahmad and Ibn Majah)
At the end of the verse (276), it is said: وَاللَّـهُ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ أَثِيمٍ ; which means that Allah Almighty does not like any disbeliever, any sinner. Here it has been indicated that those who just do not hold riba ربا as حرام حرام haram have fallen into kufr کفر (disbelief); and those who do know it to be حرام haram, yet get involved with it, are sinners, transgressors or fasiq فاسق .

Tafsir Surat Al-Baqarah: 276-277
Allah memusnahkan riba dan menyuburkan sedekah. Dan Allah tidak menyukai setiap orang yang tetap dalam kekafiran dan bergelimang dosa.
Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang beriman, mengerjakan amal saleh, mendirikan shalat, dan menunaikan zakat, mereka mendapat pahala di sisi Tuhannya. Tidak ada rasa takut pada diri mereka dan tidak (pula) mereka bersedih hati.
Ayat 276
Allah memberitakan bahwa Dia menghapuskan riba dan melenyapkannya. Hal ini terjadi dengan cara adakalanya Allah melenyapkan riba secara keseluruhan dari tangan pelakunya, atau adakalanya Dia mencabut berkah hartanya, sehingga ia tidak dapat memanfaatkannya, melainkan menghilangkannya di dunia dan kelak di hari kiamat Dia akan menyiksanya, seperti yang disebutkan di dalam firman-Nya:
Katakanlah, "Tidak sama yang buruk dengan yang baik, meskipun banyaknya yang buruk itu menarik hatimu." (Al-Maidah: 100)
“Dan Allah menjadikan (golongan) yang buruk itu sebagiannya di atas sebagian lain, lalu semuanya ditumpukkan-Nya dan dimasukkan-Nya ke dalam neraka Jahannam.” (Al-Anfal: 37)
Dan firman Allah ﷻ: “Dan sesuatu riba yang kalian berikan agar dia menambah pada harta manusia, maka riba itu tidak menambah pada sisi Allah.” (Ar-Rum: 39), hingga akhir ayat.
Ibnu Jarir mengatakan sehubungan dengan firman-Nya: “Allah memusnahkan riba.” (Al-Baqarah: 276) Makna ayat ini sama dengan sebuah hadits yang diriwayatkan dari Abdullah ibnu Mas'ud. Disebutkan bahwa Nabi ﷺ pernah bersabda, "Riba itu sekalipun (hasilnya) banyak, pada akhirnya berakibat menyusut." Hadits ini diriwayatkan pula oleh Imam Ahmad di dalam kitab Musnad-nya.
Imam Ahmad mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Hajjaj, telah menceritakan kepada kami Syarik, dari Ar-Rakin ibnur Rabi', dari ayahnya, dari ibnu Mas'ud, dari Nabi ﷺ yang bersabda: “Sesungguhnya riba itu, sekalipun (hasilnya) banyak, tetapi pada akhirnya menjadi menyusut.”
Ibnu Majah meriwayatkan dari Al-Abbas ibnu Ja'far, dari Amr ibnu Aun, dari Yahya ibnu Abu Zaidah, dari Israil, dari Ar-Rakin ibnur Rabi' ibnu Amilah Al-Fazzari, dari ayahnya, dari Ibnu Mas'ud, dari Nabi ﷺ yang bersabda: “Tidak sekali-kali seseorang memperbanyak melakukan riba, melainkan hasil akhirnya pasti akan menyusut.”
Hal ini termasuk ke dalam Bab "Muamalah" yang akibatnya bertentangan dengan tujuan yang mau dicapai, seperti apa yang diriwayatkan oleh Imam Ahmad. Disebutkan: Telah menceritakan kepada kami Abu Sa'id maula Bani Hasyim, telah menceritakan kepada kami Al-Haisam ibnu Nafi' Az-Zahiri, telah menceritakan kepadaku Abu Yahya (seorang lelaki dari kalangan penduduk Mekah), dari Farukh maula Usman, bahwa sahabat Umar ketika menjabat sebagai Amirul Mukminin keluar menuju masjid, lalu ia melihat makanan yang digelarkan. Maka ia bertanya, "Makanan apakah ini?" Mereka menjawab, "Makanan yang didatangkan buat kami." Umar berkata, "Semoga Allah memberkati makanan ini, juga orang yang mendatangkannya." Ketika dikatakan kepadanya bahwa sesungguhnya si pengirim makanan ini telah menimbun makanan kaum muslim, Umar bertanya, "Siapakah pelakunya?" Mereka menjawab bahwa yang melakukannya adalah Farukh maula Usman dan si Fulan maula Umar.
Maka Khalifah Umar memanggil keduanya, lalu Umar bertanya kepada keduanya, "Apakah yang mendorong kamu berdua menimbun makanan kaum muslim?" Keduanya menjawab, "Wahai Amirul Mukminin, kami membelinya dengan harta kami dan menjualnya." Umar berkata bahwa ia pernah mendengar Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: “Barang siapa yang melakukan penimbunan makanan kaum muslim (untuk memperoleh keuntungan yang besar), niscaya Allah akan menghukumnya dengan kepailitan atau penyakit kusta.” Maka Farukh berkata saat itu juga, "Aku berjanji kepada Allah, juga kepadamu, bahwa aku tidak akan mengulangi lagi menimbun makanan untuk selama-lamanya." Adapun maula (bekas budak) Umar, ia berkata, "Sesungguhnya kami membeli dan menjual dengan harta kami sendiri." Abu Yahya mengatakan, "Sesungguhnya aku melihat maula Umar terkena penyakit kusta."
Hadits ini diriwayatkan pula oleh Ibnu Majah melalui Al-Haisam ibnu Rafi' yang lafalnya menyebutkan seperti berikut: “Barang siapa yang melakukan penimbunan makanan kaum muslim (untuk memperoleh keuntungan yang besar), niscaya Allah akan menghukumnya dengan kepailitan dan penyakit kusta.”
Firman Allah ﷻ: “Dan menyuburkan sedekah.” (Al-Baqarah: 276)
Ayat ini dapat dibaca yurbi, berasal dari rabasy syai-a, yarbu, arbahu yurbihi artinya memperbanyak dan mengembangkan serta menumbuhkan. Dapat pula dibaca yurabbi, berasal dari tarbiyah.
Imam Al-Bukhari mengatakan: Telah menceritakan kepada kami Abdullah ibnu Munir, ia pernah mendengar dari Abun Nadr bahwa telah menceritakan kepada kami Abdur Rahman ibnu Abdullah ibnu Dinar, dari ayahnya, dari Abu Saleh, dari Abu Hurairah, bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: “Barang siapa yang bersedekah sebiji buah kurma dari usaha yang baik (halal) - Allah tidak akan menerima kecuali yang baik - maka sesungguhnya Allah menerimanya dengan tangan kanan-Nya (kekuasaan-Nya), kemudian mengembangkannya buat pelakunya, sebagaimana seseorang di antara kalian memelihara anak untanya, hingga besarnya nanti seperti bukit.”
Demikianlah menurut riwayat Imam Al-Bukhari di dalam Kitab Zakat-nya. Dia meriwayatkannya pula di dalam Kitab Tauhid, bahwa Khalid ibnu Mukhallad ibnu Sulaiman ibnu Bilal telah meriwayatkan dari Abdullah ibnu Dinar, lalu ia menyebutkan hadits ini berikut sanadnya dengan lafal yang serupa. Hadits ini diriwayatkan oleh Imam Muslim di dalam Bab "Zakat", dari Ahmad ibnu Usman Ibnu Hakim, dari Khalid ibnu Mukhallad, lalu ia menuturkan hadits ini.
Imam Al-Bukhari mengatakan bahwa hadits ini diriwayatkan pula oleh Muslim ibnu Abu Maryam, Zaid ibnu Aslam, dan Suhail, dari Abu Saleh, dari Abu Hurairah, dari Nabi ﷺ.
Menurut kami, adapun riwayat Muslim ibnu Abu Maryam, maka hadits ini hanya Imam Al-Bukhari sendirilah yang menuturkannya. Adapun hadits yang diriwayatkan melalui jalur Zaid ibnu Aslam, diriwayatkan pula oleh Imam Muslim di dalam kitab sahihnya dari Abut Tahir ibnus Sarh, dari Abu Wahb, dari Hisyam ibnu Sa'id, dari Zaid ibnu Aslam. Sedangkan hadits Suhail diriwayatkan pula oleh Imam Muslim, dari Qutaibah, dari Ya'qub ibnu Abdur Rahman, dari Suhail dengan lafal yang sama. Imam Al-Bukhari mengatakan bahwa Warqa telah meriwayatkan dari Ibnu Dinar, dari Sa'id ibnu Yasar, dari Abu Hurairah, dari Nabi ﷺ. Hadits ini disandarkan dari segi ini oleh Imam Al-Baihaqi kepada Imam Hakim dan lain-lain dari Al-Asam, dari Al-Abbas Al-Marwazi, dari Abuz Zanad, Hasyim ibnul Qasim, dari Warqa. Dia adalah Ibnu Umar Al-Yasykuri, dari Abdullah ibnu Dinar, dari Sa'id ibnu Yasar, dari Abu Hurairah, bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ pernah bersabda: “Barang siapa yang bersedekah sebiji buah kurma dari usaha yang halal - tidak akan sampai kepada Allah kecuali yang halal - maka sungguh Allah menerimanya dengan tangan kanan-Nya, lalu memeliharanya untuk pelakunya sebagaimana seseorang di antara kalian memelihara anak untanya, hingga besarnya seperti Bukit Uhud.”
Demikian pula hadits ini diriwayatkan oleh Imam Muslim, Imam At-Tirmidzi, dan Imam An-Nasai; semuanya dari Qutaibah, dari Al-Al-Laits ibnu Sa'd, dari Sa'id Al-Maqbari. Imam An-Nasai meriwayatkannya melalui Malik, dari Yahya ibnu Sa'id Al-Ansari dan dari jalur Yahya Al-Qattan, dari Muhammad ibnu Ajlan; ketiganya meriwayatkan hadits ini dari Sa'id ibnu Yasar Abul Hubab Al-Madani, dari Abu Hurairah, dari Nabi ﷺ, lalu ia menuturkan hadits ini. Diriwayatkan pula dari Abu Hurairah melalui jalur yang lain.
Ibnu Abu Hatim mengatakan: Telah menceritakan kepada kami Amr ibnu Abdullah Al-Audi, telah menceritakan kepada kami Waki', dari Abbad ibnu Mansur, telah menceritakan kepada kami Al-Qasim ibnu Muhammad yang mengatakan bahwa ia pernah mendengar Abu Hurairah mengatakan bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: “Sesungguhnya Allah menerima sedekah dan mengambilnya dengan tangan kanan-Nya, lalu memeliharanya untuk seseorang di antara kalian sebagaimana seseorang di antara kalian memelihara anak kuda atau anak untanya, sehingga sesuap makanan benar-benar menjadi seperti Bukit Uhud (besarnya).”
Hal yang membenarkan hadits ini di dalam Kitabullah adalah firman-Nya: “Allah memusnahkan riba dan menyuburkan sedekah.” (Al-Baqarah: 276)
Hal yang sama telah diriwayatkan oleh Imam Ahmad dari Waki, hal ini ada dalam tafsir Waki'. Imam At-Tirmidzi meriwayatkan dari Abu Kuraib, dari Waki' dengan lafal yang sama, lalu ia mengatakan bahwa hadits ini hasan shahih. Hal yang sama diriwayatkan pula oleh Imam At-Tirmidzi, dari Abbad ibnu Mansur dengan lafal yang sama. Imam Ahmad meriwayatkannya pula dari Khalaf ibnul Walid, dari Ibnul Mubarak, dari Abdul Walid ibnu Damrah dan Abbad ibnu Mansur; keduanya dari Abu Nadrah, dari Al-Qasim dengan lafal yang sama.
Ibnu Jarir meriwayatkannya dari Muhammad ibnu Abdul Malik ibnu Ishaq, dari Abdur Razzaq, dari Ma'mar, dari Ayyub, dari Al-Qasim ibnu Muhammad, dari Abu Hurairah, bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: “Sesungguhnya seorang hamba itu apabila bersedekah dari hasil yang baik (halal), maka Allah menerima sedekah itu darinya dan mengambilnya dengan tangan kanan-Nya, lalu memeliharanya seperti seseorang di antara kalian memelihara anak kudanya atau anak untanya. Sesungguhnya seorang lelaki itu benar-benar menyedekahkan sesuap makanan, maka sedekahnya itu berkembang di tangan (kekuasaan) Allah atau disebutkan di telapak tangan Allah, hingga besarnya seperti Bukit Uhud. Karena itu, bersedekahlah kalian.”
Hal yang sama telah diriwayatkan oleh Imam Ahmad, dari Abdur Razzaq. Jalur ini terbilang gharib (aneh), tetapi sanadnya shahih; hanya lafalnya aneh, mengingat hal yang dihafal adalah seperti yang telah disebutkan di atas.
Telah diriwayatkan dari Siti Aisyah Ummul Mukminin, seperti yang dikatakan oleh Imam Ahmad: Telah menceritakan kepada kami Abdus Samad, telah menceritakan kepada kami Hammad ibnu Sabit, dari Al-Qasim ibnu Muhammad, dari Siti Aisyah, bahwa Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: “Sesungguhnya Allah benar-benar memelihara bagi seseorang di antara kalian sebiji kurma dan sesuap makanan (yang disedekahkannya) seperti seseorang di antara kalian memelihara anak unta atau anak kudanya, hingga besarnya seperti Bukit Uhud.” Hadits ini hanya diriwayatkan oleh Imam Ahmad sendiri dari jalur ini.
Al-Bazzar mengatakan: Telah menceritakan kepada kami Yahya ibnul Ma'la ibnu Mansur, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ismail, telah menceritakan kepada kami ayahku, dari Yahya ibnu Sa'id, dari Amrah, dari Siti Aisyah, dari Nabi ﷺ. Juga dari Dahhak ibnu Usman, dari Abu Hurairah, dari Nabi ﷺ yang bersabda: “Sesungguhnya seorang lelaki benar-benar mengeluarkan suatu sedekah dari hasil yang halal, dan Allah tidak akan menerima kecuali yang halal, maka Tuhan Yang Maha Pemurah menerima sedekah itu dengan tangan (kekuasaan)-Nya, lalu Dia memeliharanya seperti seseorang di antara kalian memelihara anak kuda atau anak untanya.”
Kemudian Al-Bazzar mengatakan bahwa kami tidak mengetahui seorang pun meriwayatkan hadits ini dari Yahya ibnu Sa'id dari Amrah kecuali Abu Uwais.
Firman Allah ﷻ: “Dan Allah tidak menyukai setiap orang yang tetap dalam kekafiran dan bergelimang dosa.” (Al-Baqarah: 276)
Artinya, Allah tidak menyukai orang yang hatinya banyak ingkar lagi ucapan dan perbuatannya banyak bergelimang dosa. Merupakan suatu keharusan adanya hubungan antara pembahasan ini dengan ayat ini yang diakhiri dengan mengemukakan sifat tersebut.
Sebagai penjelasannya dapat dikatakan bahwa orang yang melakukan riba itu pada hakikatnya tidak rela dengan rezeki halal yang dibagikan oleh Allah untuknya. Dia kurang puas dengan apa yang disyariatkan oleh Allah buatnya, yaitu usaha yang diperbolehkan. Untuk itu ia berusaha dengan cara memakan harta orang lain secara batil melalui berbagai usaha yang jahat. Dia adalah orang yang ingkar kepada nikmat yang diperolehnya, lagi suka berbuat zalim dengan memakan harta orang lain secara batil.
Ayat 277
Kemudian Allah berfirman memuji orang-orang mukmin, yaitu mereka yang taat kepada perintah-Nya, bersyukur kepada-Nya, lagi berbuat baik kepada sesama makhluk-Nya. Allah memuji mereka karena mendirikan shalat dan menunaikan zakat, selain itu Allah memberitakan pahala apa yang telah Dia sediakan buat mereka yaitu pahala yang terhormat dan bahwa mereka kelak di hari kiamat aman dari berbagai kesulitan.
Untuk itu Allah ﷻ berfirman: “Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang beriman, mengerjakan amal saleh, mendirikan shalat, dan menunaikan zakat, mereka mendapat pahala di sisi Tuhannya. Tidak ada rasa takut pada diri mereka dan tidak (pula) mereka bersedih hati.” (Al-Baqarah: 277)
Allah memusnahkan harta yang diperoleh dari hasil praktik riba sedikit demi sedikit sampai akhirnya habis, atau menghilangkan keberkahannya sehingga tidak bermanfaat dan menyuburkan sedekah yakni dengan mengembangkan dan menambahkan harta yang disedekahkan, serta memberikan keberkahan harta, ketenangan jiwa dan ketenteraman hidup bagi pemberi dan penerima. Allah tidak menyukai dan tidak mencurahkan rahmat-Nya kepada setiap orang yang tetap dalam kekafiran karena mempersamakan riba dengan jual beli dengan disertai penolakan terhadap ketetapan Allah, dan tidak mensyukuri kelebihan nikmat yang mereka dapatkan, bahkan menggunakannya untuk menindas dan mengeksploitasi kelemahan orang lain, dan Allah tidak menyukai setiap orang yang bergelimang dosa karena praktik riba tidak hanya merugikan satu orang saja, tetapi dapat meruntuhkan perekonomian yang dapat merugikan seluruh warga masyarakat. Setelah dijelaskan pelaku kemaksiatan yang berupa praktik riba, selanjutnya dijelaskan keadaan orang-orang saleh yang beruntung. Sungguh, orang-orang yang beriman, mengerjakan kebajikan, melaksanakan salat secara benar, khusyuk, dan berkesinambungan dan menunaikan zakat dengan sempurna, mereka mendapat pahala di sisi Tuhannya. Tidak ada kekhawatiran terhadap mereka kapan dan dari siapa pun, karena mereka berada dalam lindungan Allah dan mereka tidak bersedih hati karena apa yang mereka akan peroleh di akhirat jauh lebih baik dari apa yang bisa jadi hilang di dunia.
Riba itu tidak ada manfaatnya sedikit pun baik di dunia maupun di akhirat nanti. Yang ada manfaatnya adalah sedekah.
Allah memusnahkan riba dan menyuburkan sedekah. Artinya memusnahkan harta yang diperoleh dari riba dan harta yang bercampur dengan riba atau meniadakan berkahnya. "Menyuburkan sedekah" ialah mengembangkan harta yang telah dikeluarkan sedekahnya sesuai dengan ketantuan-ketentuan agama atau melipatgandakan berkah harta itu. Allah berfirman:
Dan sesuatu riba (tambahan) yang kamu berikan agar harta manusia bertambah, maka tidak bertambah dalam pandangan Allah. Dan apa yang kamu berikan berupa zakat yang kamu maksudkan untuk memperoleh keridaan Allah, maka itulah orang-orang yang melipatgandakan (pahalanya). (ar-Rum/30:39).
Para ulama berpendapat bahwa yang dimaksud dengan perkataan "Allah memusnahkan riba" ialah Allah memusnahkan keberkahan harta riba, karena akibat melakukan riba timbul permusuhan antara orang-orang pemakan riba, dan kebencian masyarakat terhadap mereka terutama orang yang pernah membayar utang kepadanya dengan riba yang berlipat ganda, dan juga menyebabkan bertambah jauhnya jarak hubungan antara yang punya dan yang tidak punya. Kebencian dan permusuhan ini bila mencapai puncaknya akan menimbulkan peperangan dan kekacauan dalam masyarakat.
Allah tidak menyukai orang-orang yang mengingkari nikmat-Nya berupa harta yang telah dianugerahkan kepada mereka. Mereka tidak menggunakan harta itu menurut ketentuan-ketentuan yang telah ditetapkan Allah, serta tidak memberikannya kepada orang yang berhak menerimanya. Demikian pula Allah tidak menyukai orang-orang yang menggunakan dan membelanjakan hartanya semata-mata untuk kepentingan diri sendiri, serta mencari harta dengan menindas atau memperkosa hak orang lain.
RIBA
Sesudah sampai tiga belas ayat banyaknya Allah menunjukkan jiwa yang subur, sudi memberi karena gemblengan iman, yang di-bentuk oleh ajaran Allah maka Allah membuka kembali kejahatan hidup zaman jahiliyyah. Islam menanamkan kasih sayang di antara yang kaya dan yang miskin, dengan menyuburkan rasa sedekah dan pengorbanan, sedangkan jahiliyah ialah memberi kesempatan bagi si kaya mengisap darah si melarat untuk kepentingan diri sendiri. Yang terutama sekali ialah riba.
Apakah riba jahiliyah itu?
Dimisalkan si A sangat terdesak, entah hendak berniaga, entah hendak bercocok tanam, hartanya tidak ada, lalu dia pergi meminjam modal kepada yang mampu. Misalnya Rp1.000 dan berjanji dibayar dalam setahun. Setelah genap setahun, karena uang pembayar itu belum cukup, datanglah yang berutang itu kepada yang berpiutang menerangkan bahwa dia belum sanggup membayar sekarang. Maka, yang empunya uang berkata, “Bolehlah engkau bayar tahun depan saja asalkan lipat dua: utang Rp1.000 menjadi Rp2.000. Kalau belum juga terbayar tahun itu sehingga minta tangguh setahun lagi, boleh juga asalkan utang yang Rp2.000 menjadi Rp4.000. Akibatnya, bukanlah membantu, bukan memberi waktu, melainkan mencekik leher si melarat tadi, sehingga walaupun bagaimana dia mengangsur utang, sisa yang tinggal bertambah membuat dia melarat. Kadang-kadang harta bendanya yang ada habis licin tandas, bahkan sampai matinya menjadi utang pula kepada keluarganya yang tinggal. Inilah gambar dari riba jahiliyah itu, yang dikenal juga namanya dengan riba nasi'ah atau riba memberi tempo, yaitu memberi tempo, bukan melapangi si berutang, melainkan memperkaya yang berpiutang dan membuat melarat yang dipiutangi. Diperpanjang tempo, tetapi dipersempit bagi berutang. Maka, setelah diterangkan faedah bersedekah, sekarang diterangkanlah bahaya riba,
“Orang-orang yang memakan riba itu tidaklah akan berdiri, melainkan sebagaimana berdirinya orang yang dirasuk setan."
(pangkal ayat 275)
Mengapa sampai demikian dia? Sampai seperti orang dirasuk setan? Sehingga wajahnya pun kelihatan bengis, matanya melotot penuh benci? Tetapi mulutnya manis mem-bujuk-bujuk orang supaya suka berutang ke-padanya? Sebelum orang itu jatuh ke dalam perangkapnya yang payah melepaskan diri? “Menjadi demikian karena sesungguhnya mereka berkata, ‘Tidak lain perdagangan itu hanyalah seperti riba juga."‘ Artinya, karena dia hendak membela pendiriannya menernakkan uang, dia mengatakan bahwa pekerjaan orang berniaga itu pun serupa juga dengan pekerjaannya memakan riba, yaitu sama-sama mencari keuntungan atau sama-sama mencari makan. Keadaannya jauh berbeda. Berdagang ialah si saudagar menyediakan barang, kadang-kadang didatangkannya dari tempat lain, si pembeli ada uang pembeli barang itu. Harganya sepuluh rupiah, dijualnya sebelas rupiah. Yang menjual mendapat untung, sedangkan yang membelinya mendapatuntung pula karena yang diperlukannya telah didapatnya. Keduanya sama-sama dilepaskan keperluannya. Itu sebabnya, dia dihalalkan Allah. Bagaimana dia akan diserupakan dengan mencari keuntungan secara riba? Padahal dengan riba, yang berutang dianiaya, diisap kekayaannya, dan yang berpiutang hidup senang-senang, goyang kaki dari hasil ternak uang?
“Lantaran itu, barangsiapa yang telah kedatangan pengajaran dari Tuhannya, lalu dia berhenti," dari makan riba yang sangat jahat dan kejam itu, “maka baginyalah apa yang telah berlalu." Artinya, yang sudah-sudah itu sudahlah! Kalau dia selama ini telah menangguk keuntungan dari riba, tidaklah perlu dikembalikannya lagi kepada orang-orang yang telah dianiayanya itu; sama saja dengan dosa menyembah berhala di zaman musyrik, menjadi habis tidak ada tuntutan lagi kalau telah Islam."Dan perkaranya terserahlah kepada Allah," sehingga manusia tidak berhak buat membongkar-bongkar kembali sebab yang demikian memang salah satu dari rangkaian kehidupan jahiliyah yang tidak senonoh itu.
“‘Akan tetapi, barangsiapa yang kembali (lagi)," padahal ketenangan yang sejelas ini sudah diterimanya, “maka mereka itu menjadi ahli neraka; mereka akan kekal di dalamnya."
(ujung ayat 275)
Riba adalah salah satu kejahatan jahiliyah yang amat hina. Riba tidak sedikit pun sesuai dengan kehidupan orang beriman. Kalau di zaman yang sudah-sudah ada yang melakukan itu, sekarang karena sudah menjadi Muslim semua, hentikanlah hidup yang hina itu. Kalau telah berhenti, dosa-dosa yang lama itu habislah hingga itu, bahkan diampuni oleh Allah. Kalau dari harta keuntungan riba mereka mendirikan rumah, tidak usah rumah itu dibongkar. Mulai sekarang, hentikan sama sekali. Akan tetapi, kalau ada yang kembali kepada hidup makan riba itu, samalah dengan
setelah Islam kembali menyembah berhala; sama kekalnya dalam neraka.
“Allah membasmi riba dan Dia menyuburkan sedekah-sedekah."
(pangkal ayat 276)
Riba mesti dikikis habis sebab itu ter-pangkal dari kejahatan musyrik, kejahatan hidup dan nafsi-nafsi, asal diri beruntung, biar orang lain melarat. Dengan ini, ditegaskan bahwa berkah dari riba itu tidak ada. Itulah kekayaan yang membawa sial, membawa dendam dan kebencian. Kata-kata riba amat jahat. Kalau penyakit riba menjalar, kalau disebut orang “orang kaya", benci dan dendamlah yang timbul, sama dengan menyebut Kapitalisme dalam ukuran besar. Asal disebut kata kapitalisme, rasa benci yang timbul terlebih dahulu dan rasa dendam. Akan tetapi, Allah menyuburkan sedekah-sedekah sebab Dia mempertautkan kasih sayang di antara hati si pemberi dan si penerima, yang bersedekah dengan yang menerima sedekah. Masyarakatnya jadi lain, yaitu masyarakat yang bantu-membantu, sokong-menyokong, doa-mendoakan. Maka, jika disebut kalimat orang kaya, orang teringat akan kedermawanan, kesuburan, dan doa. moga-moga ditambah Allah rezekinya.
“Allah tidaklah suka kepada orang-orang yang sangat ingkar, lagi pembuat dosa."
(ujung ayat 276)
Sudah diterangkan manfaat masyarakat bersedekah bantu-membantu dan diterangkan pula celaka masyarakat yang orang kaya pun hidup dari makan riba. Kalau masih juga timbul makan riba dalam masyarakat demikian, nyatalah orang pemakan riba itu sudah sangat ingkar, sangat menolak kebenaran, tidak peduli kepada peraturan Allah yang tidak ada mempunyai rasa belas kasihan kepada sesama manusia. Akan berlarut-larut mereka dalam dosa. Kalau Allah telah menjelaskan bahwa Dia tidak suka kepada orang yang demikian, itu adalah ancaman bahaya yang akan menimpa mereka. Bahaya kacaunya masyarakat dan suburnya rasa dendam serta benci. Orang kaya akan menjadi timbunan benci dan dendam dari orang yang miskin.
Inilah ancaman yang telah disampaikan Allah dengan wahyu kepada Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, empat belas abad yang lalu, yang kian lama kian terasa sekarang, sehingga pertentangan antara the have (yang punya) dan the have not (yang tidak punya) telah menimbulkan Kapitalisme kemudian Imperialisme dan kemudian Kolonialisme, perjuangan kelas, pertentangan buruh dengan majikan. Sehingga, ada orang yang hidup senang, tidak pernah berusaha, hanya semata-mata dari memakan bunga uangnya yang diletakkannya dalam bank yang besar-besar. Dan, tidaklah berhenti ahli-ahli pikir berusaha membanting pikiran mencari jalan kelepasan dari kesulitan-kesulitan ini, di antaranya timbulnya ajaran Sosialisme. Akan tetapi, Sosialisme itu pun gagal karena dia hanya teori manusia dengan mengenyampingkan nilai bentukan moral dan mental manusia.
“Sesungguhnya, orang-orang yang beriman dan beramal yang saleh, dan mereka pun mendirikan shalat dan mengeluarkan zakat, untuk mereka pahala di sisi Tuhan, dan tidaklah ada ketakutan atas mereka dan tidaklah mereka akan berduka cita."
(ayat 277)
Masyarakat orang yang beriman dan beramal saleh itu tidak mungkin menimbulkan riba. Ini karena baik dia kaya maupun miskin, keduanya bergabung dalam satu kepercayaan dan satu ukhuwah (persaudaraan) serta tergabung dalam satu jamaah. Di dalam masjid tidak terhitung lagi mana yang kaya dan mana yang miskin karena semuanya menghadap kepada di satu tujuan, yaitu mengharapkan ridha Allah ﷻ

“Wahai, orang-orang yang beriman! Takwalah kepada Allah dan tinggalkanlah sisa dari rniba itu, jikalau benar-benar kamu orang-orang yang beriman."
(ayat 278)
Orang yang beriman adalah orang yang diliputi oleh rasa kasih sayang kepada sesama manusia. Yang kaya kalau hendak memberi piutang tidaklah bermaksud hendak memeras keringat dan tenaga sesama manusia. Yang miskin mengelak jauh-jauh dari memberikan kesempatan orang kaya untuk memeras dirinya. Di dalam ayat ini diperingatkan Allah pada orang-orang yang beriman setelah masyarakat Muslim terbentuk di Madinah, kalau masih ada sisa-sisa hidup dengan riba itu, mulai sekarang hendaklah hentikan.
Menurut riwayat yang dirawikan oleh Ibnu larir dan Ibnu Mundzir serta Ibnu Abi Hatim dari as-Suddi, ayat ini diturunkan berkenaan dengan diri paman Nabi ﷺ sendiri yaitu Abbas bin Abdul Muthalib. Beliau di zaman jahiliyyah mendirikan satu perkongsian dengan seseorang dari bani al-Mughirah, yang mata usaha mereka ialah menernakkan uang (makan riba). Mereka pernah meminjamkan uang kepada seseorang dari Bani Tsaqif di Thaif. Abbas kemudian masuk Islam. Setelah datang zaman Islam, datanglah peraturan ini, yaitu bahwa sisa-sisa riba jahiliyah itu ditinggalkan sama sekali. Artinya orang yang berutang di Thaif itu tidak perlu lagi memberikan bunga riba itu, cukup diberikan seberapa banyak yang diutangnya dahulu itu saja. Kalau kamu telah mengaku termasuk orang beriman, tinggalkan pekerjaan itu sama sekali. Itulah tanda beriman sebab cinta kepada harta telah kamu ganti dengan cinta kepada Allah.
“Akan tetapi, jika tidak kamu kerjakan begitu."
(pangkal ayat 279)
Artinya, kamu telah mengaku beriman, padahal makan riba masih diteruskan juga, “Maka terimalah pernyataan perang dari Allah dan Rasul-Nya." Inilah suatu peringatan yang amat keras, yang dalam bahasa kita zaman sekarang bisa disebut ultimatum dari Allah. Menurut penyelidikan kami, tidak terdapat dosa lain yang mendapat peringatan sekeras ancaman terhadap meneruskan riba ini.
Ancaman yang demikian sudahlah patut sebab riba adalah suatu kejahatan yang meruntuh sama sekali hakikat dan tujuan Islam dan iman. Dia menghancur leburkan ukhuwah yang telah ditanamkan sesama orang ber-iman dan sesama manusia. Riba benar-benar pemerasan manusia atas manusia. Segelintir manusia hidup menggoyang-goyang kaki, dari tahun ke tahun menerima kekayaan yang limpah-melimpah, padahal dia tidak bekerja dan berusaha, sedangkan yang menerima piutang memeras keringat mencarikan tambahan kekayaan buat orang lain, sedangkan dia sendiri kadang-kadang hanya lepas makan saja; dia menjadi budak selama dalam berutang itu. Yang empunya uang hanya terima bersih saja, tidak mau tahu dari mana keuntungan yang berlipat ganda terkulai itu dia dapat. Kalau sudah ada manusia yang hidup dengan cara begini, percumalah rasanya menegakkan ibadah dengan jamaah.
“Namun, jika kamu bertobat maka bolehlah kamu ambil pokok harta kamu; tidak kamu dianiaya dan tidak pula kamu menganiaya."
(ujung ayat 279)
Di sini diterangkan bahwa meneruskan hidup dengan riba setelah menjadi orang Islam berarti memaklumkan perang kepada Allah dan Rasul. Dengan ancaman yang keras itu, dapatlah dipahamkan bahwasanya seluruh harta yang diperibakan itu, baik yang dipinjamkan, maupun bunganya dari harta itu, semuanya menjadi harta yang haram; kelanjutannya ialah bahwa daulah islamiyah berhak merampas seluruh harta itu, baik modal pokok maupun bunganya. Akan tetapi, kalau kamu telah tobat, tidak hendak melanjutkan lagi kehidupan yang jahat itu maka harta yang kamu pinjamkan sebanyak jumlah asalnya, bolehlah kamu ambil kembali. Tidak kamu akan dianiaya. Artinya, dengan perlindungan daulah islamiyah, harta kamu itu dapat diminta kembali kepada yang berutang. Kalau dia tidak mau membayar, daulah islamiyah boleh diminta turun tangan untuk mengambil harta itu dengan paksa. Kamu pun jangan pula menganiaya.
Di dalam ayat “tidak kamu akan dianiaya" ini pun terkandungsiiaturahimyangmendalam sekali. Misalnya uangmu telah berbulan-bulan dipinjamnya, sedangkan kamu tidak boleh, telah haram memakan riba dari harta itu maka Rasulullah ﷺ sendiri menganjurkan qardh, yaitu suatu perbuatan “timbang rasa" dari si peminjam. Setelah uang kontannya dibayar, kalau engkau ada perasaan, hendaklah engkau beri dia hadiah ala kadarnya, tanda terima kasih. Riba diharamkan, qardh dianjurkan.
Kemudian datang ayat lanjutan tuntunan iman,
“Dan, jika ada yang kesusahan maka berilah tempo sampai kelapangan."
(pangkal ayat 280)
Ini sudah menjadi tuntunan kepada orang yang beriman. Hanya orang yang beriman yang mau memberikan kelapangan kepada orang yang berutang kepadanya. Apatah lagi kalau yang berutang itu orang yang beriman seperti dia pula. Jangan dia didesak-desak, karena imannya, niscaya utangnya akan dibayarnya; berilah dia kesempatan.
“Akan tetapi, kalau kamu bersedekah, adalah itu lebih baik buat kamu, jikalau kamu ketahui."
(ujung ayat 280)
Itulah lanjutan jiwa pembangunan masyarakat orang yang beriman. Alangkah baik dan mesranya jika seseorang yang berutang datang meminta maaf dan memohon diberi tempo agar sekian bulan lalu disambut oleh yang memberi utang dengan perkataan, “Utangmu itu telah aku lepaskan. Engkau tidak berutang lagi." Ayat berkata bahwa cara begini jikalau kamu pikirkan, adalah amat baik bagi dirimu sendiri. Dengan demikian, kamu telah menaikkan tingkat budimu. Dia akan berkesan dalam jiwamu sendiri, menjadi dermawan, dan mengokohkan ukhuwah dengan yang diberi utang.
Sebagai penutup dari ayat riba, yang dijiwai dengan membentuk iman dan pergaulan aman damai, kasih dan sayang, di akhir persoalan riba itu ditutuplah dengan ayat,
“Dan hendaklah kamu takut akan suatu hari, yang di hari itu kamu akan dikembalikan kepada Allah."
(pangkal ayat 281)
Jika hari itu datang, segala harta benda yang membuat kepala pusing di dunia ini tidaklah ada yang akan dibawa mati. Hanya tiga iapis kain kafan, tidak lebih. Itu pun akan hancur dalam bumi, akan kembali kepada Tuhan. Kalau kita pikirkan dalam-dalam apa arti yang terkandung dalam kata kembali, niscaya kita akan merenung panjang. Orang yang kembali ialah orang yang pergi meninggalkan tempat bermula lalu dia kembali pulang. Kalau dipikir-pikir dari segi lain, kita kembali mungkin tidak ada. Sebab, Allah selalu di dekat kita, Dia tidak jauh dari kita. Akan tetapi, pikiran dan wajah hidup kita ini kerap kali lupa bahwa Allah ada di dekat kita atau kita lupa kepada-Nya, sedangkan Dia tidak pernah melupakan kita. Maut adalah kembali kepada Allah yang sebenarnya. Karena, pada waktu itu kita mulai insaf bahwa yang kita tuju adalah Allah. Hanya kemewahan hidup dan harta benda dunia ini juga yang kerap menyebabkan kita lupa."Kemudian akan disempurnakan ganjaran tiap-tiap orang dari apa yang telah mereka usahakan." Artinya, setelah kembali kepada Allah itu, setelah meninggalkan dunia dan masuk ke alam akhirat, akan datanglah waktu perhitungan. Perhitungan itu amat sempurna dan amat teliti; dikaji satu demi satu. Dipertimbangkan (mizan) mana yang lebih berat, amalan yang baikkah atau amalan yang buruk,
“Dan tidaklah mereka akan dianiaya."

Allah tidak ada berkepentingan dalam penganiayaan. Sebab, orang yang menganiaya ialah karena dia mendapat keuntungan dari menganiaya itu. Dengan sifat Rahman dan Rahim-Nya, Allah bergembira sekali dapat memberikan ganjaran dan pahala kepada orang yang berbuat baik. Sebab itu, kalau iman telah tumbuh dalam hati, tidaklah mungkin seorang Mukmin mencari keuntungan dengan merugikan orang lain. Sehingga, ujung ayat perkara riba ini pun adalah perbandingan yang dalam di antara kasih Allah di akhirat kelak kepada hamba-Nya dengan kejahatan tukang makan riba yang menggaruk keuntungan dengan memeras keringat orang lain.
Menurut beberapa riwayat, ayat riba di dekat akhir surah al-Baqarah ini adalah ayat yang turun kemudian sekali kepada Rasulullah. Dan, dalam satu riwayat dari Tabi'in Said bin Jubair, hanya sembilan hari saja setelah ayat ini turun, wafatlah Nabi kita.
(Allah menghancurkan riba) dengan menguranginya dan melenyapkan berkahnya (dan menyuburkan sedekah), maksudnya menambah dan mengembangkannya serta melipatgandakan pahalanya. (Dan Allah tidak menyukai setiap orang yang ingkar) yang menghalalkan riba (lagi banyak dosa), artinya yang durhaka dengan memakan riba itu hingga akan menerima hukuman-Nya.
