Translation

They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allāh,1 and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary.2 And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.
Footnotes
1 By their obedience to them rather than to what Allāh ordained.
2 By their worship of him in conjunction with Allāh.

Tafsir

They have taken their rabbis, the scholars among the Jews, and their monks, the devout among the Christians, as lords beside God - following them in making lawful what God has made unlawful and making unlawful what He has made lawful - and the Messiah, son of Mary, when they were not commanded, in the Torah and the Bible, except to worship One God: there is no god except Him; glory be to Him, as an affirmation of His transcendence [high], above what they associate [with Him].
