وَأَنَّا
And that we
كُنَّا

نَقۡعُدُ
sit
مِنۡهَا
there in
مَقَٰعِدَ
positions
لِلسَّمۡعِۖ
for hearing
فَمَن
but (he) who
يَسۡتَمِعِ
listens
ٱلۡأٓنَ
now
يَجِدۡ
will find
لَهُۥ
for him
شِهَابٗا
a flaming fire
رَّصَدٗا
waiting
وَأَنَّا
And that we
كُنَّا
used (to)
نَقۡعُدُ
sit
مِنۡهَا
there in
مَقَٰعِدَ
positions
لِلسَّمۡعِۖ
for hearing
فَمَن
but (he) who
يَسۡتَمِعِ
listens
ٱلۡأٓنَ
now
يَجِدۡ
will find
لَهُۥ
for him
شِهَابٗا
a flaming fire
رَّصَدٗا
waiting

Translation

And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing,1 but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.

1 - Before the prophethood of Muḥammad (ﷺ) the jinn used to collect information by eavesdropping on the angels and then pass it on to fortunetellers and soothsayers.

Tafsir

And we used to, that is to say, before his Mission, sit in [certain] places therein to listen in; but anyone listening now will find a meteor lying in wait for him, aimed at him, ready to strike him.
