Translation

They were in the habit of sleeping but little by night,

Tafsir

Little of the night did they use to sleep (maa is extra; yahja'oona is the predicate of kaanoo; qaleelan, 'little', is an adverb), in other words, they used to sleep for a small portion of the night and perform prayers during most of it,
