Ayah

Word by Word
وَلَوۡ
And if
كَانُواْ
they had
يُؤۡمِنُونَ
believed
بِٱللَّهِ
in Allah
وَٱلنَّبِيِّ
and the Prophet
وَمَآ
and what
أُنزِلَ
has been revealed
إِلَيۡهِ
to him
مَا
not
ٱتَّخَذُوهُمۡ
they (would have) taken them
أَوۡلِيَآءَ
(as) allies
وَلَٰكِنَّ
[and] but
كَثِيرٗا
many
مِّنۡهُمۡ
of them
فَٰسِقُونَ
(are) defiantly disobedient
وَلَوۡ
And if
كَانُواْ
they had
يُؤۡمِنُونَ
believed
بِٱللَّهِ
in Allah
وَٱلنَّبِيِّ
and the Prophet
وَمَآ
and what
أُنزِلَ
has been revealed
إِلَيۡهِ
to him
مَا
not
ٱتَّخَذُوهُمۡ
they (would have) taken them
أَوۡلِيَآءَ
(as) allies
وَلَٰكِنَّ
[and] but
كَثِيرٗا
many
مِّنۡهُمۡ
of them
فَٰسِقُونَ
(are) defiantly disobedient

Translation

If only they had believed in Allah, in the Prophet, and in what hath been revealed to him, never would they have taken them for friends and protectors, but most of them are rebellious wrong-doers.

Tafsir

Yet had they believed in God and the Prophet, Muhammad may peace and salutation be upon him, and what has been revealed to him, they would not have affiliated with them, namely, [with] the disbelievers; but many of them are wicked, rebellious against faith.
