ٱلْأَحْقَاف : ٢٤

  • فَلَمَّا Then when
  • رَأَوۡهُ they saw it
  • عَارِضٗا (as) a cloud
  • مُّسۡتَقۡبِلَ approaching
  • أَوۡدِيَتِهِمۡ their valleys
  • قَالُواْ they said
  • هَٰذَا This
  • عَارِضٞ (is) a cloud
  • مُّمۡطِرُنَاۚ bringing us rain
  • بَلۡ Nay
  • هُوَ it
  • مَا (is) what
  • ٱسۡتَعۡجَلۡتُم you were asking it to be hastened
  • بِهِۦۖ you were asking it to be hastened
  • رِيحٞ a wind
  • فِيهَا in it
  • عَذَابٌ (is) a punishment
  • أَلِيمٞ painful
And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Rather, it is that for which you were impatient:1 a wind, within it a painful punishment,

Then, when they ﷺ it, that is, [when they ﷺ] what chastisement [really] was, as a sudden cloud, a cloud that appeared [out of nowhere] on the horizon, heading towards their valleys, they said, 'This is a cloud that will bring us rain!'. God, exalted be He, says: Nay, but it is what you sought to hasten, of the chastisement - a hurricane (reehun substitutes for maa, 'what') containing a painful chastisement,
