Ayah

Word by Word
وَقَالُواْ
And they say
لَوۡلَا
Why not
نُزِّلَ
was sent down
هَٰذَا
this
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ
the Quran
عَلَىٰ
to
رَجُلٖ
a man
مِّنَ
from
ٱلۡقَرۡيَتَيۡنِ
the two towns
عَظِيمٍ
great
وَقَالُواْ
And they say
لَوۡلَا
Why not
نُزِّلَ
was sent down
هَٰذَا
this
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ
the Quran
عَلَىٰ
to
رَجُلٖ
a man
مِّنَ
from
ٱلۡقَرۡيَتَيۡنِ
the two towns
عَظِيمٍ
great

Translation

And they said, "Why was this Qur’ān not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?"1

Tafsir

And they said, 'If only this Qur'aan had been revealed to some great man from, the inhabitants of, the two towns!', in other words, from either of the two; such as al-Waleed ibn al-Mugheera at Mecca or 'Urwa ibn Mas'ood al-Thaqafee at Taa'if.
