فُصِّلَت : ٢٦

  • وَقَالَ And said
  • ٱلَّذِينَ those who
  • كَفَرُواْ disbelieve
  • لَا (Do) not
  • تَسۡمَعُواْ listen
  • لِهَٰذَا to this
  • ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ Quran
  • وَٱلۡغَوۡاْ and make noise
  • فِيهِ therein
  • لَعَلَّكُمۡ that you may
  • تَغۡلِبُونَ overcome
And those who disbelieve say, "Do not listen to this Qur’ān and speak noisily1 during [the recitation of] it that perhaps you will overcome."

1 - Other meanings include "speak improperly" and/or "make a clamor." The purpose of this was to prevent the hearing or understanding of the Qur’ān.
And those who disbelieve say, during the Prophet's may peace and salutation be upon him recitation [of Al-Qur'an], 'Do not listen to this Qur'aan and hoot it down, make a din and so forth, and clamour whenever he is reciting, that perhaps you might prevail', so that he will then desist from recitation.
