ٱلزُّمَر ٢١
- أَلَمۡ Do not
- تَرَ you see
- أَنَّ that

- فَسَلَكَهُۥ and He makes it flow

- مُّخۡتَلِفًا (of) different

- يَهِيجُ they wither
- فَتَرَىٰهُ and you see them
- مُصۡفَرّٗا turn yellow
- ثُمَّ then
- يَجۡعَلُهُۥ He makes them
- حُطَٰمًاۚ debris
- إِنَّ Indeed
- فِي in
- ذَٰلِكَ that
- لَذِكۡرَىٰ surely, (is) a reminder
- لِأُوْلِي for those of understanding
- ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ for those of understanding
Do you not see that Allāh sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. Indeed in that is a reminder for those of understanding.
Have you not seen, realised, that God sends down water from the sky, then conducts it as springs, making it enter points of springs, in the ground? Then with it He brings forth crops of diverse hues. Then they wither, they become dried-out, and you see them, for example, after having been green, turning yellow. Then He turns them into chaff. Truly in that there is a reminder for people of pith, possessors of intellect, by which they may be reminded, for it is an indication of God's Oneness and His power.
The Parable of the Life of this World
Allah says,
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ أَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاء مَاء
See you not that Allah sends down water from the sky,
Allah tells us that water originates in the sky.
This is like the Ayah:
وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَأءِ مَأءً طَهُوراً
and We send down pure water from the sky. (25:48)
So, Allah sends down water from the sky, and it settles in the earth, then He causes it to flow wherever He wills, and He causes springs, great and small, to flow as needed.
Allah says:
فَسَلَكَهُ يَنَابِيعَ فِي الاَْرْضِ
and causes it to penetrate the earth, as water springs,
Sa`id bin Jubayr and `Amir Ash-Sha`bi said that all the water on earth has its origins in the sky.
Sa`id bin Jubayr said, its origins lie in the snow, meaning that snow piles up in the mountains, then settles at the bottom (of the mountains) and springs flow from the bottom of them.
ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُ بِهِ زَرْعًا مُّخْتَلِفًا أَلْوَانُهُ
and afterward thereby produces crops of different colors,
means, then from the water which comes down from the sky or flows from springs in the earth, He brings forth crops of different colors, i.e., different kinds of forms, tastes, scents, benefits, etc.
ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَاهُ مُصْفَرًّا
and afterward they wither and you see them turn yellow;
means, after they have been ripe and fresh, they become old and you see them turn yellow when they have dried out.
ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُ حُطَامًا
then He makes them dry and broken pieces.
means, then they become brittle.
إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَذِكْرَى لاُِوْلِي الاَْلْبَابِ
Verily, in this is a reminder for men of understanding.
means, those who are reminded by this and who learn the lesson from it, that this world is like this -- it is green and fresh and beautiful, then it will become old and ugly. The young man will become a weak, senile old man, and after all of that comes death. The blessed one is the one whose state after death will be good. Allah often likens the life of this world to the way He sends down water from the sky and crops and fruits grow thereby, then they become dry and brittle.
This is like the Ayah:
وَاضْرِبْ لَهُم مَّثَلَ الْحَيَوةِ الدُّنْيَا كَمَأءٍ أَنْزَلْنَـهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَاخْتَلَطَ بِهِ نَبَاتُ الاٌّرْضِ فَأَصْبَحَ هَشِيمًا تَذْرُوهُ الرِّياحُ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مُّقْتَدِرًا
And put forward to them the example of the life of this world:it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is able to do everything. (18:45)
The People of Truth and the People of Misguidance are not Equal
Allah says,
أَفَمَن شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرَهُ لِلِْسْلَمِ فَهُوَ عَلَى نُورٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِ
Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is in light from his Lord,
means, is this person equal to the one who is hard-hearted and far from the truth?
This is like the Ayah:
أَوَمَن كَانَ مَيْتًا فَأَحْيَيْنَـهُ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُ نُورًا يَمْشِي بِهِ فِى النَّاسِ كَمَن مَّثَلُهُ فِي الظُّلُمَـتِ لَيْسَ بِخَارِجٍ مِّنْهَا كَذَلِكَ
Is he who was dead and We gave him life and set for him a light (i.e. Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men -- like him who is in the darkness (i.e., disbelief) from which he can never come out. (6:122)
Allah says:
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْقَاسِيَةِ قُلُوبُهُم مِّن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
So, woe to those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allah!
meaning, they do not become soft when Allah is mentioned, and they do not feel humility or fear, and they do not understand.
أُوْلَيِكَ فِي ضَلَلٍ مُبِينٍ
They are in plain error!
The Description of the Qur'an
Here Allah praises His Book, the Noble Qur'an, which was revealed to His noble Messenger.
Allah says,
اللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابًا مُّتَشَابِهًا مَّثَانِيَ
Allah has sent down the Best Statement, a Book, its parts resembling each other (and) oft-repeated.
Mujahid said,
This means that the entire Qur'an's parts resemble each other and are oft-repeated.
Qatadah said,
One Ayah resembles another and one letter resembles another.
Ad-Dahhak said,
It is oft-repeated so that people will understand what their Lord tells them.
Ikrimah and Al-Hasan said,
There may be an Ayah in one Surah, and another Ayah in another Surah that resembles it.
Sa`id bin Jubayr narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:
Oft-repeated means that parts of the Qur'an resemble one another and repeat one another.
Some of the scholars said that it was narrated from Sufyan bin `Uyaynah that
مُّتَشَابِهًا مَّثَانِيَ
(its parts resembling each other (and) oft-repeated), means,
that some passages of the Qur'an may sometimes refer to one thing, so they resemble one another, and sometimes they mention a thing and its opposite. Such as when the believers then the disbelievers are mentioned, or when Paradise then Hell are described, and so on, and this is the meaning of oft-repeated.
Examples include the Ayat:
إِنَّ الاٌّبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
وَإِنَّ الْفُجَّارَ لَفِى جَحِيمٍ
Verily, the most righteous will be in delight; and verily, the most wicked will be in the blazing Fire (Hell). (82:13-14)
كَلَّ إِنَّ كِتَابَ الفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٍ
(Nay! Truly, the Record of the most wicked is (preserved) in Sijjin), until
كَلَّ إِنَّ كِتَابَ الاَْبْرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ
(Nay! Verily, the Record of the most righteous is (preserved) in `Illiyyin), (83:7-18)
هَذَا ذِكْرٌ وَإِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ لَحُسْنَ مَأبٍ
(This is a Reminder. And verily, for those who have Taqwa is a good final return (Paradise)), until;
هَذَا
وَإِنَّ لِلطَّاغِينَ لَشَرَّ مَأبٍ
(This is so! And for those who transgress, there will be an evil final return (Fire)). (38:49-55)
And there are other similar passages. All of this has to do with it being oft-repeated, i.e., when two meanings are referred to. But when a passage is about one thing, with some parts of it resembling others, this is;
its parts resembling each other.
This is not the same as the Mutashabihat mentioned in the Ayah:
مِنْهُ ايَـتٌ مُّحْكَمَـتٌ هُنَّ أُمُّ الْكِتَـبِ وَأُخَرُ مُتَشَـبِهَـتٌ
In it are Ayat that are entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book; and others not entirely clear. (3:7)
that refers to something else altogether.
تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it. Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah.
means, this is the description of the righteous, when they hear the Words of the Compeller, the Protector, the Almighty, the Oft-Forgiving, because they understand the promises and warnings contained therein. The frightening words and threats make their skin shiver from fear.
ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
(Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah), because of their hope for His mercy and kindness. They are unlike others, the wicked, immoral sinners, in a number of ways:
- First They listen to the recitation of the Ayat (of the Qur'an), while those (sinners) listen to poetic verse recited by female singers.
- Second When the Ayat of Ar-Rahman are recited to them, they fall down in prostration weeping, with the proper attitude of fear, hope, love, understanding and knowledge, as Allah says:
إِنَّمَا الْمُوْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـتُهُ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَـناً وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَوةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ
أُوْلـيِكَ هُمُ الْمُوْمِنُونَ حَقّاً لَّهُمْ دَرَجَـتٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Ayat are recited unto them, they increase their faith; and they put their trust in their Lord; Who perform the Salah and spend out of that We have provided them. It is they who are the believers in it.
For them are grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness and a generous provision (i.e., Paradise). (8:2-4)
وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُواْ بِـَايَـتِ رَبِّهِمْ لَمْ يَخِرُّواْ عَلَيْهَا صُمّاً وَعُمْيَاناً
And those who, when they are reminded of the Ayat of their Lord, fall not on them (as if they were) deaf and blind. (25:73)
When they hear the Ayat of Allah, they are not too busy to pay attention to them; they listen to them and understand their meanings. So they act upon them and prostrate when they hear them, out of understanding, not out of ignorance and blind following of others.
- Third they adhere to the correct etiquette when they listen to them. As the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, used to do when they listened to the words of Allah recited by the Messenger of Allah. Their skin would shiver, and their hearts would soften to the remembrance of Allah. They did not shout or do other actions that are not natural; on the contrary, they would sit quietly with the proper attitude of fear, in an unparalleled fashion. They attained the victory of praise from their Lord in this world and the Hereafter.
Abdur-Razzaq said, Ma`mar told us that Qatadah, may Allah have mercy on him, recited,
تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
(The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it. Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah), and said,
`This is the characteristic of the friends of Allah; Allah has described them in this manner, saying that their skin shivers, their eyes weep and their hearts find rest to the remembrance of Allah. He did not say that they lose their minds and swoon; that is the characteristic of the followers of innovation, and that comes from the Shaytan.'
Allah's saying:
ذَلِكَ هُدَى اللَّهِ يَهْدِي بِهِ مَنْ يَشَاء
That is the guidance of Allah. He guides therewith whom He wills;
means, this is the characteristic of those whom Allah has guided, and anyone who does anything different is one of those whom Allah has sent astray.
وَمَن يُضْلِلْ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ هَادٍ
and whomever Allah sends astray, for him there is no guide.
The Final Destination of the Disbelievers
Allah says,
أَفَمَن يَتَّقِي بِوَجْهِهِ سُوءَ الْعَذَابِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
Is he then, who will confront with his face the awful torment on the Day of Resurrection?
وَقِيلَ لِلظَّالِمِينَ
And it will be said to the wrongdoers:
He will be rebuked and he and the evildoers like him will be told:
ذُوقُوا مَا كُنتُمْ تَكْسِبُونَ
Taste what you used to earn!
`Is this like the one who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection' as Allah says:
أَفَمَن يَمْشِى مُكِبّاً عَلَى وَجْهِهِ أَهْدَى أَمَّن يَمْشِى سَوِيّاً عَلَى صِرَطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
Is he who walks prone on his face, more rightly guided, or he who walks upright on the straight way; (67:22)
يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى النَّارِ عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُواْ مَسَّ سَقَرَ
The Day they will be dragged on their faces into the Fire (it will be said to them):Taste you the touch of Hell! (54:48)
and,
أَفَمَن يُلْقَى فِى النَّارِ خَيْرٌ أَم مَّن يَأْتِى ءَامِناً يَوْمَ الْقِيَـمَةِ
Is he who is cast into the Fire better or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection? (41:40)
In each of these Ayat, it was sufficient to refer to one of the two groups.
Allah's statement,
كَذَّبَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ فَأَتَاهُمْ الْعَذَابُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
Those before them denied, and so the torment came on them from directions they perceived not.
means, the previous generations who denied the Messengers were destroyed by Allah for their sins. And none had they to protect them from Allah
فَأَذَاقَهُمُ اللَّهُ الْخِزْيَ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا
So Allah made them to taste the disgrace in the present life,
means, by means of the punishment and revenge which He sent down upon them, and the rejoicing of the believers for what happened to them. So, let those who are addressed beware, for they have rejected the noblest of the Messengers and the Seal of the Prophets. And what Allah has promised them of severe punishment in the Hereafter is worse than whatever befell them in this world.
Allah says:
وَلَعَذَابُ الاْخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ
but greater is the torment of the Hereafter if they only knew!
The Parable of Shirk
Allah says,
وَلَقَدْ ضَرَبْنَا لِلنَّاسِ فِي هَذَا الْقُرْانِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلٍ
And indeed We have put forth for men, in this Qur'an every kind of parable,
means, `We have explained things to mankind in it (the Qur'an) by setting forth examples and parables.'
لَّعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ
in order that they may remember.
Because parables bring the meaning closer to people's minds.
As Allah says:
ضَرَبَ لَكُمْ مَّثَلً مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ
He sets forth for you a parable from yourselves. (30:28)
meaning, `so that you may learn it from yourselves.' in Order that they may have Taqwa of Him.
And Allah says:
وَتِلْكَ الاٌّمْثَالُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ وَمَا يَعْقِلُهَأ إِلاَّ الْعَـلِمُونَ
And these are the examples We give for mankind; but none will understand them except those who have knowledge (of Allah). (29:43)
قُرانًا عَرَبِيًّا غَيْرَ ذِي عِوَجٍ
An Arabic Qur'an, without any crookedness (therein),
means, it is in a plain Arabic tongue, with no crookedness, deviation or confusion. It is plain, clear proof. Allah has made it like this and has revealed it like this,
لَّعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ
in order that they may have Taqwa of Him,
means, in order that they may heed the warnings contained therein, and strive to attain the promises therein.
Then Allah says
ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلً رَّجُلً فِيهِ شُرَكَاء مُتَشَاكِسُونَ
Allah puts forth a parable:a man belonging to many partners disputing with one another,
meaning, they were disputing concerning that slave in whom they all had a share.
وَرَجُلً سَلَمًا لِّرَجُلٍ
and a (slave) man belonging entirely to one master.
means, no one owned him except that one man.
هَلْ يَسْتَوِيَانِ مَثَلً
Are those two equal in comparison?
meaning, they are not the same.
By the same token, the idolator who worships other gods besides Allah and the sincere believer who worships none besides Allah, with no partner or associate, are not equal. What comparison can there be between them?
Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, Mujahid and others said,
This Ayah is the parable of the idolator and the sincere believer.
Because this parable is so clear and obvious,
Allah then says:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
All the praises and thanks be to Allah!
i.e., for establishing proof against them.
بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
But most of them know not.
means, and for this reason they associate others in worship with Allah.
The fact that the Messenger of Allah and Quraysh will die, and how They will dispute before Allah
Allah's saying;
إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ
Verily, you will die, and verily, they (too) will die.
This is one of the Ayat which Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, quoted when the Messenger of Allah died, so that the people would realize that he had really died.
Another Ayah which he quoted was:
وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلاَّ رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ أَفإِيْن مَّاتَ أَوْ قُتِلَ انقَلَبْتُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَـبِكُمْ وَمَن يَنقَلِبْ عَلَى عَقِبَيْهِ فَلَن يَضُرَّ اللَّهَ شَيْياً وَسَيَجْزِى اللَّهُ الشَّـكِرِينَ
Muhammad is no more than a Messenger, and indeed (many) Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will do to Allah; and Allah will give reward to those who are grateful. (3:144)
The meaning of this Ayah is that you will certainly depart this world and be gathered before Allah in the Hereafter. You will dispute the issues of Tawhid and Shirk before Allah, things over which you disputed in this world, and He will judge between you with truth, and He is the Judge, the All-Knowing. So, He will save the sincere believers who worship Him alone, and He will punish the disbelievers who deny His Oneness and associate others in worship with Him.
Although this Ayah speaks about the believers and disbelievers, and how they will dispute in the Hereafter, it also includes all disputants in this world, for their disputes will come back to them in the Hereafter.
Ibn Abi Hatim, may Allah have mercy on him, recorded that Ibn Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
When the Ayah
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ
Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord.
was revealed, Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, `O Messenger of Allah, will we repeat our disputes?'
He said, Yes.
He (Az-Zubayr) said, `This is a very serious matter.'
Ahmad recorded from Az-Zubayr bin Al-`Awwam, may Allah be pleased with him, that when this Surah was revealed to the Messenger of Allah:
إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ
Verily, you will die, and verily, they (too) will die. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord.
Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, O Messenger of Allah, will the sins that we committed against others in this world be repeated for us?
He said,
نَعَمْ لَيُكَرَّرَنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ حَتْى يُوَدَّى إِلَى كُلِّ ذِي حَقَ حَقُّه
Yes, they will be repeated until everyone who is entitled will have his rights restored to him.
Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, By Allah, it is a very serious matter.
It was also recorded by At-Tirmidhi, who said Hasan Sahih.
Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُون
(Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord), means,
the truthful one will dispute with the liar, the oppressed will dispute with the oppressor, the one who is guided will dispute with the one who is misguided and the weak will dispute with the arrogant.
Ibn Mandah recorded in Kitab Ar-Ruh that Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
The people will dispute on the Day of Resurrection, to the extent that the soul will dispute with the body. The soul will say to the body, `You did such and such,' and the body will say to the soul, `You told me to do it and you tempted me.'
Then Allah will send an angel to judge between them, and he will say, `You two are like a man who cannot walk but can see, and a man who cannot see but can walk.'
They went into a garden and the one who could not walk said to the one who was blind, `I see fruit there, but I cannot reach it.'
The blind man said, `Climb on me and get it.'
So he climbed on him and got it. So which of them is the wrongdoer
They will say, `Both of them.'
The angel will say to them, `You have passed judgement against yourselves.'
The body was a means of transportation for the soul.
Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Sa`id bin Jubayr said that Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
This Ayah was revealed and we did not know what it was revealed about:
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُون
(Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord).
He said,
We said, what will we dispute about? There is no dispute between us and the People of the Book, so what will we dispute about until the Fitnah occurred.
Then Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
This is what our Lord promised us we would dispute about.

Commentary
The word: يَنَابِيعَ (yanabi in verse 21: فَسَلَكَهُ يَنَابِيعَ فِي الْأَرْضِ (made it penetrate into the earth [ and gush forth ] in the form of springs) is the plural form of: یَنبُوع (yanbu) which means springs that gush out from the soil. The sense is that the act of sending down water from the sky is by itself a great blessing, but also crucial was the arrangement to conserve it underground. But for this arrangement to save this blessing of water, its users would have derived benefit from it only at the time of rains, or for a few days following it. Although, on water depends their life, and it is the kind of need one cannot stay free from, even for a day. Therefore, Allah Ta’ ala did not consider it sufficient to just send down this blessing, instead, made elaborate and very unique arrangements for its conservation. Some of it gets deposited in ditches, ponds, tanks and reservoirs. Then a huge supply is turned into ice and made to sit on mountain peaks and its ridges, an arrangement that takes care of the danger of water going bad. Then ice melts and water travels through veins in the mountains until it reaches the land and gushes out in the form of streams, all over, on its own, without any human input, and finally finds its way through the land in the form of rivulets and rivers. Rest of the water keeps flowing underground which can be retrieved by digging a well almost anywhere.
Details of this water supply system as they appear in the noble Qur'an have been given in the commentary of Surah Al-Mu'minan under the verse: (then We lodged it in the earth, and of course, We are able to take it away - Al-Mu'minun, 23:18). Later in verse 21, it was said: مُّخْتَلِفًا أَلْوَانُهُ (the crops of different colours). At the time the crops grow and ripen, colors keep changing from one to the other. Since these colors change, therefore, the word: مُّخْتَلِفًا (mukhtalifan), in terms of its grammatical analysis, has been used in the form of: حَال (ha state, circumstantial condition) which denotes change.
In the last sentence of verse 21, it was said: إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكْرَىٰ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ (Surely, in that, there is a lesson for the people of understanding), that is, in this process - when water is sent down, is conserved, is made available to human beings to grow all sorts of crops and trees the colors of which change following which they turn yellow and dry making grains separate from chaff - there is a great lesson for people of understanding, because they provide the proof of the infinite power and wisdom of Allah Ta’ ala. These are visible signs that could lead human beings to discover the reality behind their own creation, and that in turn, could become the means through which one succeeds in recognizing his or her own creator and master.

Tafsir Surat Az-Zumar: 21-22
Apakah kamu tidak memperhatikan, bahwa sesungguhnya Allah menurunkan air dari langit, lalu diatur-Nya menjadi sumber-sumber air di bumi, kemudian ditumbuhkan-Nya dengan air itu tanam-tanaman yang bermacam-macam warnanya, lalu ia menjadi kering, lalu kamu melihatnya kekuning-kuningan, kemudian dijadikan-Nya hancur berderai-derai. Sesungguhnya pada yang demikian itu benar-benar terdapat pelajaran bagi orang-orang yang mempunyai akal. Maka apakah orang-orang yang dibukakan Allah hatinya untuk (menerima) agama Islam, lalu ia mendapat cahaya dari Tuhannya (sama dengan orang-orang yang membatu hatinya)? Maka celakalah mereka yang telah membatu hatinya untuk mengingat Allah. Mereka itu dalam kesesatan yang nyata.
Ayat 21
Allah ﷻ menceritakan bahwa asal mula air yang ada di dalam tanah berasal dari langit, seperti yang disebutkan oleh firman-Nya: “Dan Kami turunkan dari langit air yang bersih.” (Al-Furqan: 48) Apabila telah diturunkan air dari langit, maka air itu tersimpan di dalam bumi, lalu Allah ﷻ mengalirkannya ke berbagai bagian bumi menurut apa yang dikehendaki-Nya, dan Allah menyumberkannya menjadi mata air-mata air, ada yang kecil dan ada yang besar sesuai dengan keperluan. Karena itulah disebutkan dalam firman-Nya dalam surat ini: “Lalu diatur-Nya menjadi sumber-sumber air di bumi.” (Az-Zumar: 21)
Ibnu Abu Hatim mengatakan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ali ibnul Husain, telah menceritakan kepada kami Amr ibnu Ali, telah menceritakan kepada kami Abu Qutaibah alias Atabah ibnul Yaqzan, dari Ikrimah, dari Ibnu Abbas r.a. sehubungan dengan makna firman-Nya: “Apakah kamu tidak memperhatikan, bahwa sesungguhnya Allah menurunkan air dari langit, lalu diatur-Nya sumber-sumber air di bumi.” (Az-Zumar: 21). Tiada suatu air pun di dalam bumi, melainkan berasal dari air yang diturunkan dari langit, tetapi rongga-rongga yang ada di dalam bumilah yang mengubahnya. Yang demikian itu disebutkan oleh firman-Nya: “Lalu diatur-Nya menjadi sumber-sumber air di bumi.” (Az-Zumar: 21) Maka barang siapa yang ingin mengubah air yang asin menjadi tawar, hendaklah ia menguapkannya (dan uapnya itu akan menjadi air yang tawar).
Hal yang sama telah dikatakan oleh Sa'id ibnu Jubair dan Amir Asy-Sya'bi, bahwa semua air yang ada di dalam tanah berasal dari langit. Sa'id ibnu Jubair mengatakan bahwa asalnya dari salju. Yaitu salju itu terhimpun di atas gunung-gunung dan menetap di puncaknya, lalu dari bawahnya menyumberlah mata air-mata air.
Firman Allah ﷻ: “Kemudian ditumbuhkan-Nya dengan air itu tanam-tanaman yang bermacam-macam warnanya.” (Az-Zumar: 21)
Kemudian dari air yang diturunkan dari langit dan yang timbul dari sumber air yang ada di bumi dikeluarkanlah tumbuh-tumbuhan yang beraneka ragam bentuk, rasa, bau, dan manfaatnya.
“Lalu ia menjadi kering.” (Az-Zumar: 21)
Yakni sesudah kelihatan segar dan muda, terus menjadi tua; maka kamu lihat ia menjadi kuning lalu kering.
“Kemudian dijadikan-Nya hancur berderai-derai.” (Az-Zumar: 21)
Maksudnya, sesudah itu menjadi kering dan hancur berguguran.
“Sesungguhnya pada yang demikian itu benar-benar terdapat pelajaran bagi orang-orang yang mempunyai akal.” (Az-Zumar: 21)
Orang-orang yang mengambil pelajaran dari fenomena ini akan menyimpulkan bahwa pada mulanya dunia itu seperti gambaran tersebut; diawali dengan hijau segar dan indah, lalu menjadi tua dan cacat. Dahulunya muda, kini menjadi tua dan pikun serta lemah; dan sesudah semuanya itu lalu mati. Orang yang berbahagia adalah orang sesudah itu mendapat kebaikan.
Sering kali Allah ﷻ membuat perumpamaan bagi kehidupan dunia ini dengan air yang diturunkan-Nya dari langit, lalu dengannya ditumbuhkan berbagai macam tumbuh-tumbuhan dan buah-buahan, sesudah itu menjadi hancur berguguran. Sebagaimana yang disebutkan di dalam firman-Nya melalui ayat lain, yaitu: “Dan berilah perumpamaan kepada mereka (manusia), kehidupan dunia adalah sebagai air hujan yang Kami turunkan dari langit, maka menjadi subur karenanya tumbuh-tumbuhan di muka bumi, kemudian tumbuh-tumbuhan itu menjadi kering yang diterbangkan oleh angin. Dan Allah Maha Kuasa atas segala sesuatu.” (Al-Kahfi: 45)
Ayat 22
Firman Allah ﷻ: “Maka apakah orang-orang yang dibukakan hatinya untuk (menerima) agama Islam, lalu ia mendapat cahaya dari Tuhannya (sama dengan orang yang membatu hatinya)?” (Az-Zumar: 22)
Maksudnya, apakah sama orang yang demikian dengan orang yang membatu hatinya lagi jauh dari kebenaran? Semakna dengan apa yang disebutkan oleh firman-Nya: “Dan apakah orang yang sudah mati, kemudian dia Kami hidupkan dan Kami berikan kepadanya cahaya yang terang, yang dengan cahaya itu dia dapat berjalan di tengah-tengah masyarakat manusia, serupa dengan orang yang keadaannya berada dalam gelap gulita yang sekali-kali tidak dapat keluar darinya?” (Al-Anam: 122).
Karena itulah disebutkan dalam surat ini oleh firman-Nya:
“Maka celakalah mereka yang telah membatu hatinya untuk mengingat Allah.” (Az-Zumar: 22)
Yakni hati mereka tidak menjadi lembut saat menyebut nama Allah, tidak khusyuk, tidak sadar dan tidak memahami. “Mereka itu dalam kesesatan yang nyata.” (Az-Zumar: 22)
Wahai manusia, apakah engkau tidak memperhatikan bahwa Allah menurunkan air hujan dari langit, lalu diaturnya air hujan itu menjadi sumber-sumber air yang memancar dan sungai-sungai yang mengalir di bumi, kemudian dengan air itu ditumbuhkan-Nya tanam-tanaman yang bermacam-macam warnanya, kemudian tumbuhan itu berubah menjadi kering dan layu, lalu engkau melihatnya kekuning-kuningan setelah segar kehijauan, kemudian dijadikan-Nya tumbuhan itu mati dan hancur berderai-derai. Sungguh, pada proses penciptaan yang demikian bertahap-tahap itu terdapat pelajaran berharga dan nasihat bermanfaat bagi orang-orang yang mempunyai akal sehat dan fitrah yang lurus. 22. Tidaklah sama antara para pendurhaka yang tidak mengambil pelajaran dari kejadian di sekitarnya dengan orang-orang yang mempunyai akal sehat dan mempergunakannya untuk beriktibar. Maka apakah orang-orang yang dibukakan hatinya oleh Allah untuk menerima agama Islam dan mengamalkan ajarannya lalu dia mendapat cahaya dari Tuhannya sehingga mau mengikuti petunjuk Rasulullah sama dengan orang yang hatinya membatu' Tentu tidak sama. Maka, celakalah mere-ka yang hatinya telah membatu karena enggan untuk mengingat Allah dan menyimpang dari jalan-Nya. Mereka itu berada dalam kesesatan yang nyata karena tidak mendapat taufik dan hidayah Allah untuk menerima kebenaran.
Pada ayat ini Allah memerintahkan manusia memikirkan salah satu dari suatu proses kejadian di alam ini, yaitu proses turunnya hujan dan tumbuhnya tanam-tanaman di permukaan bumi ini. Kalau diperhatikan seakan-akan kejadian itu merupakan suatu siklus yang dimulai pada suatu titik dalam suatu lingkaran, dimulai dari adanya sesuatu, kemudian berkembang menjadi besar, kemudian tua, kemudian meninggal atau tiada, kemudian mulai pula suatu kejadian yang baru lagi dan begitulah seterusnya sampai kepada suatu masa yang ditentukan Allah, yaitu masa berakhirnya kejadian alam ini.
Menurut kajian ilmiah, distribusi dan dinamika air di dalam tanah dilukiskan dalam ayat ini. Di samping menjadi air larian yang langsung mengalir di permukaan tanah, sebagian air yang jatuh dari langit baik sebagai air hujan maupun salju yang mencair akan mengimbuh (berinfiltrasi) ke dalam tanah dan menyebar di dalam kesarangan (pori-pori) tanah. Air akan ditahan oleh pori-pori tanah dengan kekuatan yang berbanding terbalik dengan ukuran pori-pori tanah.
Pada pori-pori tanah dengan ukuran yang besar, air akan dapat ditarik oleh gaya gravitasi dan dapat mengalir (perkolasi) ke lapisan tanah atau batuan yang lebih bawah atau mengalir secara lateral searah kemiringan lereng. Air tanah dangkal yang mengalir searah kemiringan lereng ini akan keluar lagi sebagai mata air. Air yang mengalir ke lapisan yang lebih bawah kemudian akan mengisi lapisan pembawa air tanah (akifer) yang merupakan lapisan tanah atau batuan yang tersusun oleh butiran-butiran yang kasar, utamanya pasir. Apabila akifer ini muncul ke permukaan tanah, misalnya pada tekuk lereng, maka pada tempat munculnya tersebut akan dijumpai pula mata air.
Pori-pori dengan ukuran yang lebih kecil, dikenal dengan istilah pori kapiler, akan menahan air di dalamnya sebagai kelembaban tanah. Air yang terdapat di dalam pori-pori kapiler ini tidak akan dilepaskan kecuali oleh tegangan yang lebih besar dari tenaga gravitasi, umumnya oleh penguapan (evaporasi), atau pada lapisan yang lebih dalam oleh tenaga hisap akar tanaman. Kelembaban tanah inilah yang kemudian dipakai oleh tanaman untuk bermetabolisme dan kemudian menguap dari stomata daun dan bagian tanaman lain yang berkhlorophil. Penguapan air tanah dengan cara ini dikenal dengan istilah transpirasi. Tanah yang memiliki kelembaban cukup akan dicirikan oleh tumbuhan yang menutupinya memiliki daun berwarna hijau. Apabila kelembaban berkurang maka daun lambat laun akan menguning dan kemudian akan mengering. Daun-daun yang mengering akan rontok untuk mengurangi proses penguapan.
Air yang menguap oleh terik panas matahari, kemudian menjadi awan yang bergumpal, dihalau kembali oleh angin ke suatu tempat sehingga menurunkan hujan. Proses kejadian demikian itu menjadi bahan renungan bagi orang yang mau menggunakan pikirannya. Tentu ada Zat Yang Mahakuasa yang mengatur semuanya itu, sehingga segala sesuatu terjadi dengan teratur dan rapi. Tidak mungkin manusia yang melakukannya. Yang melakukan semua itu tentulah Zat yang berhak disembah dan ditaati segala perintah-Nya.

THAGUT
“Dan orang-orang yang menjauhi thagut bahwa akan menyembah kepadanya dan kembali kepada Allah."
(pangkal ayat 17)
Kita sudah memahamkan apa arti thagut. Yaitu segala orang yang menganggap dirinya atau dianggap oleh orang lain sangat berkuasa, sehingga saat menyamai kekuasaan Allah sendiri. Dari mashdar thughyaanan yang pokok artinya ialah sangat kafir, sangat melanggar aturan. Kalau air ialah melimpah, membanjir. Kalau manusia ialah sangat zalim.
Thagut itu umumnya diartikan berhala saja. Padahal dalam perkembangan negara-negara di za-man modern kita melihat kadang-kadang negara-negara itu sendiri diberhalakan, nasionalisme atau kebangsaan “Tanah airku benar selalu" (right or wrong is my country). Kemudian itu memuja pemimpin, pembangun negara, pahlawan dan sebagainya sehingga dituhankan. Kaum komunis tidak mengakui ada Tuhan, tetapi disiplin memuja pemimpin menyebabkan komunis menjadi satu “agama" menyembah tuhan pemimpin. Jerman Nazi bmemberi gelar pada Hitler “Feuhrer" yang berarti Pemimpin, Fascist Italia memberi gelar kepada Mussolini “II Duche", yang artinya pemimpin juga. Namun kesudahan hidup dari pemimpin-pemimpin yang dituhankan itu sangAllah menyedihkan. Ada yang mati bunuh diri dan ada yang mati dibunuh dengan hina.
Sebab itu maka dengan tuntunan ayat ini, kaum beriman diberi ingat agar menjauh dari Thagut, sehingga sampai disembah-sembah. Tetapi lekas-lekaslah kembali kepada Allah. Dalam kalimat menjauhi yang dalam bahasa Arabnya tertulis dalam ayat ijtanibuu terkandung arti yang sangat dalam, pertemuan di antara dua kata yang negatif dan positif. Negatif dari Thagut dengan jalan menjauhinya atau ijtanibuu. Positif kepada Allah dengan kalimat wa anaabuu llallahi yang berarti dan mereka kembali kepada Allah.
Maka bagi orang yang menjauhi Thagut dari menyembahnya lalu segera kembali kepada Allah."Bagi mereka adalah berita gembira." Allah menyediakan kegembiraan baginya, sebab dia telah mencapai kemerdekaan jiwa yang sejati.
“Maka gembirakanlah hamba-hamba-Ku." (ujung ayat 17)
“Yang mendengarkan perkataan."

Yaitu bahwa perkataan-perkataan yang mereka dengarkan mereka perhatikan baik-baik, pasang telinga nyalangkan mata dan sambut dengan penuh kesadaran. “Lalu mengikuti mana yang sebaik-baiknya."
Zamakhsyari menguraikan tafsir ayat ini dalam al-Kasysya'-nya, “Maksud ayat ialah mendidik mereka agar mereka dalam hal agama hendaklah kritis, saat memilih di antara yang baik dengan yang lebih baik, yang utama dengan yang sangat utama. Masuk di dalamnya dari hal memilih suatu pendirian atau madzhab, di antara dua yang bagus mana yang lebih kukuh, mana yang lebih kuat ketika diuji, mana yang lebih jelas dalil dan alasannya, dan sekali-kali jangan jadi orang yang hanya taklid (menurut saja dengan tidak memakai pertimbangan akal sendiri).
Satu tafsir dari Ibnu Abbas, “Didengannya ada kata-kata yang baik dan ada yang tidak enak didengar. Maka yang dipegangnya ialah yang baik, sedang yang tidak enak didengar itu tidak dipercakapkannya."
Untuk perlengkapan tafsir ayat ini saya salinkan satu kisah manusia.
Pada tahun 1345 Hijriyah, 1926 Masehi, sesudah setahun Raja Abdul Aziz Ibnu Saud menduduki Hejaz dan mengalahkan Kerajaan Syarif Husain dan putra-putranya, naik hajilah ke Mekah dua orang pemimpin Islam Indonesia yang terkenal di masa itu, yaitu Umar Said Cokroaminoto sebagai pembangun dan pemimpin Partai Sarekat Islam dan Kiai Haji Mas Mansyur pemimpin dan ulama Muhammadiyah.
Kedua beliau itu sempat juga saat berhadapan muka dengan Raja Abdul Aziz yang terkenal itu, yang sedang di puncak kemenangannya. Sebelum beliau-beliau diterima menghadapi, Raja Ibnu Saud lebih dahulu mencari keterangan-keterangan tentang kedua gerakan itu, Sarekat Islam dan Muhammadiyah dan pribadi kedua pemimpin besar itu. Zaman itu adalah zaman penjajahan. Tentu saja ada suara-suara kurang enak yang disampaikan orang tentang kedua gerakan itu dan pribadi beliau berdua. Apalah lagi Pemerintah Belanda mempunyai konsulatnya di Jeddah dan Vice Konsulnya seorang pegawai Bumiputra di Mekah.
Setelah mendengar berita yang kurang bagus dari pihak yang memburukkan, Raja Abdul Aziz memanggil pula seorang orang besar Wahabi dari Nejd yang pernah melawat ke Tanah Jawa di masa Ibnu Saud masih mengepung Jeddah pada tahun 1925 dan dia sempat meninjau kedua gerakan Islam itu dan sempat bertemu juga dengan kedua pemimpin Islam Indonesia itu. Nama orang besar Wahabi itu Syekh Abdul Aziz al-Atiiqiy.
Setelah bertemu, Raja menanyakan tentang kedua gerakan itu dan pribadi kedua pemimpin. Abdul Aziz al-Atiiqiy memberikan keterangan, “Sarekat Islam adalah satu gerakan penantang penjajahan Belanda dan membuka mata seluruh Muslimin di Tanah Jawa itu. Muhammadiyah adalah gerakan agama yang menegakkan madzhab Salaf seperti gerakan Syekh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab juga. Kedua gerakan itu sangat berpengaruh di negeri itu. Yang pertama berat kepada politik dan yang kedua berat kepada membangun Ruh Islam agar kembali kepada sunnah Rasulullah ﷺ"
Mendengar keterangan dari orang besar itu barulah jelas oleh Raja Abdul Aziz latar belakang dari kedua orang Jawa yang akan menemui Baginda itu. Dan setelah tiba waktunya, kedua beliau diterima benar-benar menurut adat istiadat Arabi yang asli, tidak banyak kesulitan protokol, apalah lagi K.H. Mas Mansyur lancar sekali berbahasa Arab.
Setelah selesai pertemuan itu dalam satu kesempatan bertemu Syekh Abdul Aziz dengan Raja. Lalu Raja yang mulai membuka persoalan tentang kedua pemimpin besar Jawa yang beberapa hari yang lalu datang menghadapi itu. Lalu di antara penilaian Raja terhadap kedua Pergerakan Sarekat Islam dan Muhammadiyah, dan kedua pemimpinnya, Umar Said Cokroaminoto dikatakannya kepada Syekh Abdul Aziz, di antaranya kata Baginda, “Memang, ya, Abdul Aziz! Saya lihat cita-cita dan harapan kedua gerakan Islam di Jawa itu tergambar dalam pribadi kedua pemimpin itu. Aku menampak kegagahan dan ketangkasan Sarekat Islam berjuang melawan penjajah asing terbayang pada pribadi Syekh Syukri Amin; pada suaranya yang bulat, pada ketegasan sikapnya dan pada matanya yang menunjukkan keperkasaan! Dan perjuangan Muhammadiyah hendak menegakkan paham Salaf dan berpegang pada ajaran Islam yangasli terbayang jelas sekali pada tawadhu-nya Syekh Mansur, lemah lembut sikapnya, fasih lidahnya berbahasa Arab dan luas ilmu agamanya. Yang pertama seorang ahli perjuangan yang gagah, yang kedua seorang ulama yang besar! Semoga Tanah Jawa akan mencapai cita-citanya, ‘Al-Ja-wiyyuuun rijaal thayyibuun' (orang jawa orang baik-baik semua)"
Kisah ini saya dengar dari mulut Kiai Haji Mohammad. Sejak di rumah beliau, ketika di Kauman Dalam, pada tahun 1034 ketika saya singgah di sana dalam perjalanan pulang kembali dari tugas jadi mubaligh dan guru Muhammadiyah di Makassar.
Kalimat “Jawa" masih lebih populer pada masa itu dari “Indonesia" sekarang. Ada juga dipopulerkan “Al-Hindi Syirqiyah" (Hindia Timur), tetapi belum saat menghilangkan kepopuleran sebutan “Jawa" atau “Jawi".
Kemudian ternyata juga menurut jalan sejarah yang adil bahwa pribadi Cokroaminoto dan Kiai H. Mas Mansyur ada juga pengaruh dalam membentuk pribadi Soekarno sebagai pembentuk nasionalisme Indonesia. Soekarno sendiri mengakui bahwa kedua beliau itu adalah gurunya, baik dalam perjuangan politik yang akan ditegakkannya kemudian atau dalam hal agama Islam yang dia peluk. Sehingga ketika pembuangannya dipindahkan Belanda dari Endeh ke Bengkulu, Muhammadiyahlah yang menyambut beliau di sana dan dengan resmi sampai di Bengkulu itu Soekarno masuk Muhammadiyah. Dan setelah Jepang menduduki Indonesia, Soekarno diberi kesempatan membentuk PUTERA (Pusat Tenaga Rakyat) dengan pemimpin empat serangkah Soekarno, Mohammad Hatta, Ki Hajar Dewantara, dan K.H. Mas Mansyur.
Selanjutnya Allah memberikan pujian kepada orang-orang yang demikian, “Itulah orang-orang yang diberi petunjuk oleh Allah." Karena di dalam banyak hal yang baik dia telah saat menyaring dan memilih mana yang lebih baik. Adapun mana yang buruk mereka tidak mau memedulikannya dan tidak mau menanggapinya. Dan sekali lagi mereka dipuji oleh Allah, “Dan itulah orang-orang yang mempunyai akal budi." (ujung ayat 18)
“Apakah orang-orang yang telah pasti atasnya ketentuan adzab?"
(pangkal ayat 19)
Menurut keterangan al-Farraa' arti ayat ini ialah, “Apakah orang yang telah pasti padanya ketentuan adzab engkau sangka akan saat engkau tolong?"
“Apakah engkau yang akan membebaskan orang yang dalam neraka."
(ujung ayat 19)
Ayat ini berupa pertanyaan (istifhaam) tetapi bermaksud bantahan. Bahwa barang-siapa yang telah menuruti jalan yang salah atau mendengar kata lalu memilih mana yang buruk, tidak suka memilih mana yang baik, lebih menyukai jalan kufur daripada jalan iman, sudah pastilah neraka tempat orang itu.
“Tetapi orang-orang yang bertakwa kepada Tuhan mereka untuk mereka adalah bilik-bilik, di atasnya pun bilik-bilik yang dibangun."

Dia disambut dengan persediaan bilik-bilik, tempat tinggal yang indah dan bertingkat. “Mengalir di bawahnya sungai-sungai." Menunjukkan sejuk dan nyaman hawanya di sana.
“Allah telah berjanji dan tidaklah Allah akan memungkiri janji."
(ujung ayat 20)
“Apakah tidak engkau perhatikan bahwasanya Allah menurunkan air dari langit."

Langit yang dimaksud di sini ialah yang di atas kita! “Maka diatur-Nya telaga-telaga di bumi." Telaga atau mata air terbagi dua macam, yaitu yang berkumpul di puncak gunung lalu mengalir ke tempat yang rendah melalui tempat yang tertentu; itulah yang bernama sungAl-sungai. Ada pula yang menyelinap ke dalam bumi dan berkumpul di sana; itulah yang jadi telaga atau sumur dan mata air, “Kemudian dikeluarkan-Nya dengan sebabnya, tanam-tanaman." Yaitu dengan sebab air itu! Ada yang secara cepat dan ada yang secara lambat. Bahkan lambatnya itu sampai ada yang beratus tahun. “Berbagai ragam warna-warnanya." Yang kehidupan subur tanam-tanaman berbagai warna itu sangat bergantung kepada air dari telaga itu."Kemudian itu dia menjadi kering." Yaitu setelah tanam-tanaman mencapai kesuburan, lanjutannya ialah menjadi kering, Menjadi tua! Suatu isyarat menyuruh manusia yang menanamnya segera memotongnya karena tugas hidupnya sudah habis. “Lalu dia pun engkau lihat kekuning-kuningan." Tadinya hijau laksana permadari terhampar, lama-lama kuning laksana emas terbentang."Kemudian itu Dia jadikan dia hancur berderai," tidak ada gunanya lagi sebab tugasnya sudah selesai, supaya segera ditukar dengan bibit yang baru. “Sesungguhnya pada yang demikian telah Allah peringatan bagi orang-orang yang mempunyai akal budi."

(Apakah kamu tidak memperhatikan) maksudnya tidak mengetahui (bahwa sesungguhnya Allah menurunkan air dari langit, maka diatur-Nya menjadi sumber-sumber) yakni, dia memasukkan air itu ke tempat-tempat yang dapat menjadi sumber air (di bumi kemudian ditumbuhkan-Nya dengan air itu tanam-tanaman yang bermacam-macam warnanya, lalu ia menjadi kering) menjadi layu dan kering (lalu kamu melihatnya) sesudah hijau menjadi (kekuning-kuningan kemudian dijadikan-Nya hancur berderai) yakni rontok (Sesungguhnya pada yang demikian itu benar-benar terdapat pelajaran) peringatan (bagi orang-orang yang mempunyai akal) bagi orang-orang yang mau mengambil pelajaran darinya untuk menyimpulkan keesaan dan kekuasaan Allah ﷻ
