  • وَقَالُوٓاْ And they will say
  • ءَامَنَّا We believe
  • بِهِۦ in it
  • وَأَنَّىٰ But how
  • لَهُمُ for them
  • ٱلتَّنَاوُشُ (will be) the receiving
  • مِن from
  • مَّكَانِ a place
  • بَعِيدٖ far off
And they will [then] say, "We believe in it!" But how for them will be the taking1 [of faith] from a place far away?2
Footnotes
1 Literally, "taking of something within easy reach," in other words, "How can they expect to obtain faith at this point?"
2 i.e., their former life on earth, wherein they had every opportunity but which is now gone, never to return.
And they will say, 'We believe in him [now]', in other words, [in] Muhammad may peace and salutation be upon him - or [if read 'We believe in it', then] in Al-Qur'an. But how can they attain [it] (read tanaawush or tanaa'ush), that is, attain faith, from a place that is far away, from the place for [attaining] it - as they are [now] in the Hereafter, and the [proper] place for [attaining] it was in this world -
