Ayah

Word by Word
لِّيَسۡـَٔلَ
That He may ask
ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
the truthful
عَن
about
صِدۡقِهِمۡۚ
their truth
وَأَعَدَّ
And He has prepared
لِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
for the disbelievers
عَذَابًا
a punishment
أَلِيمٗا
painful
لِّيَسۡـَٔلَ
That He may ask
ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
the truthful
عَن
about
صِدۡقِهِمۡۚ
their truth
وَأَعَدَّ
And He has prepared
لِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
for the disbelievers
عَذَابًا
a punishment
أَلِيمٗا
painful

Translation

That He may question the truthful about their truth.1 And He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.

1 - i.e., that He may ask the prophets what they conveyed to their people and what response they received. "The truthful" may also refer to those who believed in the message conveyed by the prophets and imparted it to others.

Tafsir

that He, God, may question the truthful about their truthfulness, in delivering the Message, as a way thereby to [justifiably] reproach the disbelievers; and He, exalted be He, has prepared for those who disbelieve, in them, a painful chastisement ('adhaaban aleeman is a supplement to akhadhnaa, 'We took').
