Ayah

Word by Word
فَإِنَّكَ
So indeed, you
لَا
(can) not
تُسۡمِعُ
make the dead hear
ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ
make the dead hear
وَلَا
and not
تُسۡمِعُ
make the deaf hear
ٱلصُّمَّ
make the deaf hear
ٱلدُّعَآءَ
the call
إِذَا
when
وَلَّوۡاْ
they turn
مُدۡبِرِينَ
retreating
فَإِنَّكَ
So indeed, you
لَا
(can) not
تُسۡمِعُ
make the dead hear
ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ
make the dead hear
وَلَا
and not
تُسۡمِعُ
make the deaf hear
ٱلصُّمَّ
make the deaf hear
ٱلدُّعَآءَ
the call
إِذَا
when
وَلَّوۡاْ
they turn
مُدۡبِرِينَ
retreating

Translation

So indeed, you will not make the dead hear, nor will you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs, retreating.

Tafsir

And so you cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when (read al-du'aa'a idhaa, pronouncing both hamzas, or by not pronouncing the second one [that comes] between it and the yaa') they go away with their backs turned.
