Ayah

Word by Word
وَإِن
And if
تُكَذِّبُواْ
you deny
فَقَدۡ
then verily
كَذَّبَ
denied
أُمَمٞ
(the) nations
مِّن
before you
قَبۡلِكُمۡۖ
before you
وَمَا
And not
عَلَى
(is) on
ٱلرَّسُولِ
the Messenger
إِلَّا
except
ٱلۡبَلَٰغُ
the conveyance
ٱلۡمُبِينُ
clear
وَإِن
And if
تُكَذِّبُواْ
you deny
فَقَدۡ
then verily
كَذَّبَ
denied
أُمَمٞ
(the) nations
مِّن
before you
قَبۡلِكُمۡۖ
before you
وَمَا
And not
عَلَى
(is) on
ٱلرَّسُولِ
the Messenger
إِلَّا
except
ٱلۡبَلَٰغُ
the conveyance
ٱلۡمُبِينُ
clear

Translation

And if you [people] deny [the message] - already nations before you have denied. And there is not upon the Messenger except [the duty of] clear notification.1

1 - Commentators have differed over this verse - whether it is a continuation of the words of Prophet Abraham or words of comfort given by Allāh to Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ), which according to context seems more likely.

Tafsir

But if you deny, that is, if you deny me, O people of Mecca, then [many] communities have denied before you, that is, before my time; and the messenger's duty is only to communicate [the Message] clearly'. Both stories are meant to comfort the Prophet may peace and salutation be upon him. And regarding his people, God, exalted be He, says:
