مُتۡرَفِيهِم

بِٱلۡعَذَابِ
with the punishment

يَجۡـَٔرُونَ
cry for help
حَتَّىٰٓ
Until
إِذَآ
when
أَخَذۡنَا
We seize
مُتۡرَفِيهِم
their affluent ones
بِٱلۡعَذَابِ
with the punishment
إِذَا
behold!
هُمۡ
They
يَجۡـَٔرُونَ
cry for help

Translation

Until when We seize their affluent ones with punishment,1 at once they are crying [to Allāh] for help.

1 - In worldly life, before the punishment of the Hereafter. Although general, the description includes specifically the punishment of the Quraysh by famine.

Tafsir

Indeed (hattaa is for inceptiveness) when We seize their affluent ones, their wealthy and their leaders, with chastisement, [with] the sword, on the day of Badr, behold! they are supplicating loudly, clamouring [in supplication]. It is [then] said to them:
