وَإِذۡ
And when
قُلۡنَا
We said
لِلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ
to the Angels
ٱسۡجُدُواْ
Prostrate
لِأٓدَمَ
to Adam
فَسَجَدُوٓاْ
then they prostrated
إِلَّآ
except
إِبۡلِيسَ
Iblis
أَبَىٰ
he refused
وَإِذۡ
And when
قُلۡنَا
We said
لِلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ
to the Angels
ٱسۡجُدُواْ
Prostrate
لِأٓدَمَ
to Adam
فَسَجَدُوٓاْ
then they prostrated
إِلَّآ
except
إِبۡلِيسَ
Iblis
أَبَىٰ
he refused

Translation

When We said to the angels, "Prostrate yourselves to Adam", they prostrated themselves, but not Iblis: he refused.

Tafsir

And, mention, when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate before Adam'; so they prostrated, except Iblees, who was the father of the jinn - he used to keep company with the angels and worship God alongside them: he refused, to prostrate before Adam, he said: 'I am better than him' [Q. 7:12].
