أَفَتَطۡمَعُونَ
Do you hope
أَن
that
يُؤۡمِنُواْ
they will believe
لَكُمۡ
[for] you
وَقَدۡ
while indeed
كَانَ
(there) has been
فَرِيقٞ
a party
مِّنۡهُمۡ
of them
يَسۡمَعُونَ
(who used to) hear
كَلَٰمَ
(the) words
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
ثُمَّ
then
يُحَرِّفُونَهُۥ
they distort it
مِنۢ
from
بَعۡدِ
after
مَا
[what]
عَقَلُوهُ
they understood it
وَهُمۡ
while they
يَعۡلَمُونَ
know
أَفَتَطۡمَعُونَ
Do you hope
أَن
that
يُؤۡمِنُواْ
they will believe
لَكُمۡ
[for] you
وَقَدۡ
while indeed

وَهُمۡ
while they
يَعۡلَمُونَ

Translation

Do you covet [the hope, O believers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allāh and then distort it [i.e., the Torah] after they had understood it while they were knowing?

Tafsir

Are you then so eager, O believers, that they, the Jews, should believe you, seeing there is a party of them, a group of their rabbis, that heard God's word, in the Torah, and then tampered with it, changing it, and that, after they had comprehended it, [after] they had understood it, knowingly?, [knowing full well] that they were indulging in mendacity (the hamza [at the beginning of the verb a-fa-tatma'oon] is [an interrogative] for rejection, in other words, 'Do not be so eager, for they have disbelieved before').
