وَإِذَا
And when
طَلَّقۡتُمُ
you divorce
ٱلنِّسَآءَ
the women
فَبَلَغۡنَ
and they reach
أَجَلَهُنَّ
their (waiting) term
فَأَمۡسِكُوهُنَّ
then retain them
بِمَعۡرُوفٍ
in a fair manner
أَوۡ
or
سَرِّحُوهُنَّ
release them
بِمَعۡرُوفٖۚ
in a fair manner
وَلَا
And (do) not
تُمۡسِكُوهُنَّ
retain them
ضِرَارٗا
(to) hurt
لِّتَعۡتَدُواْۚ
so that you transgress
وَمَن
And whoever
يَفۡعَلۡ
does
ذَٰلِكَ
that
فَقَدۡ
then indeed
ظَلَمَ
he wronged
نَفۡسَهُۥۚ
himself
وَلَا
And (do) not
تَتَّخِذُوٓاْ
take
ءَايَٰتِ
(the) Verses
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
هُزُوٗاۚ
(in) jest
وَٱذۡكُرُواْ
and remember
نِعۡمَتَ
(the) Favors
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
upon you
وَمَآ
and what
أَنزَلَ
(is) revealed
عَلَيۡكُم
to you
مِّنَ
of
ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ
the Book
وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةِ
and the wisdom
يَعِظُكُم
He instructs you
بِهِۦۚ
with it
وَٱتَّقُواْ
And fear
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ
and know
أَنَّ
that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah (is)
بِكُلِّ
of every
شَيۡءٍ
thing
عَلِيمٞ
All-Knower
وَإِذَا
And when

يَعِظُكُم
He instructs you
بِهِۦۚ

وَٱتَّقُواْ
And fear
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ
and know
أَنَّ
that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah (is)
بِكُلِّ
of every
شَيۡءٍ
thing
عَلِيمٞ
All-Knower

Translation

When ye divorce women, and they fulfil the term of their ('Iddat), either take them back on equitable terms or set them free on equitable terms; but do not take them back to injure them, (or) to take undue advantage; if any one does that; He wrongs his own soul. Do not treat Allah's Signs as a jest, but solemnly rehearse Allah's favours on you, and the fact that He sent down to you the Book and Wisdom, for your instruction. And fear Allah, and know that Allah is well acquainted with all things.

Tafsir

When you divorce women, and they have, very nearly, reached, the end of, their term, then retain them, by returning to them, honourably, not harming them, or set them free honourably, or leave them until their term is completed; do not retain them, when reverting, in harm (diraaran is an object denoting reason), to transgress, that is, so as to force them to redemption, or to repudiate them or confine them indoors for a long time; whoever does that has wronged his soul, by exposing it to God's chastisement; take not God's verses in mockery, in jest by contravening them, and remember God's grace upon you, that is, Islam, and the Book, Al-Qur'an, and the wisdom, the rulings contained therein, He has revealed to you, to exhort you therewith, so that you should give thanks by acting in accordance with it; and fear God, and know that God has knowledge of all things, and nothing can be hidden from Him.
