Translation

A. L. R. These are the symbols (or Verses) of the perspicuous Book.

Tafsir

Yoosuf (Prophet Joseph may peace be upon him) Meccan, except for verses 1, 2, 3 and 7, which are Medinese; it consists of 111 verses, and was revealed after soorat Hood. Alif laam raa': God knows best what He means by these [letters]. Those, verses, are the verses of the Book, Al-Qur'an (the genitive annexation carries the meaning of [partitive] min, 'from') that makes plain, the one that manifests truth [distinguishing it] from what is falsehood.
