O Salih

مَرۡجُوّٗا
the one in whom hope was placed
قَبۡلَ

هَٰذَآۖ
this
أَتَنۡهَىٰنَآ
Do you forbid us
أَن
that
نَّعۡبُدَ
we worship
مَا
what
يَعۡبُدُ
worshipped
ءَابَآؤُنَا
our forefathers
وَإِنَّنَا
And indeed we
لَفِي
surely (are) in
شَكّٖ
doubt
مِّمَّا
about what
تَدۡعُونَآ
you call us
إِلَيۡهِ
to it
مُرِيبٖ
suspicious
قَالُواْ
They said
يَٰصَٰلِحُ
O Salih
قَدۡ

أَتَنۡهَىٰنَآ

وَإِنَّنَا
And indeed we
لَفِي
surely (are) in
شَكّٖ
doubt
مِّمَّا
about what
تَدۡعُونَآ
you call us
إِلَيۡهِ
to it
مُرِيبٖ
suspicious

Translation

They said: "O Salih! thou hast been of us! a centre of our hopes hitherto! dost thou (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers worshipped? But we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which thou invitest us."
Ad

Tafsir

They said, 'O Saalih, you had been one of promise among us, that is to say, we had hoped that you would become [our] chief, before this, that has issued from you. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped?, in the way of graven images? Truly we are in grave doubt, [doubt] creating [great] uncertainty, concerning that to which you are calling us', in the way of [affirming] God's Oneness.
